Cishi Wan (Magnetite and Cinnabar Pill): Treats epilepsy, mania, and tinnitus or deafness with miraculous efficacy. It is also used for treating internal eye opacities and the dilation of "Shen Shui" (aqueous humor), serving as the premier formula for restoring vision to the blind.
Formula: Ci Shi (Magnetitum, 2 liang), Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, 1 liang), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 3 liang, half raw and half stir-fried). Processed into pills with refined honey; take 3 qian per dose, washed down with boiled water.
Note: Ci Shi should be used raw; if Zhu Sha is stir-fried, it can be fatal. Ci Shi is black and enters the Kidney; Zhu Sha is red and enters the Heart. Water reflects, fire illuminates; when Water and Fire mutually assist each other, visual brilliance radiates outward. However, the eyes receive essence from the five Zang organs, which is supplemented by grains. Shen Qu aids in digesting grains, thereby facilitating the formation of essence; thus, it is a divine formula for improving vision. Its treatment of tinnitus and deafness relies on its heavy-settling function to restrain the upward rush of deficient Yang. Ke Yunbo stated: "This is a holy remedy for epilepsy, taking advantage of the interaction between Water and Fire via the two minerals, while Shen Qu eliminates the old and generates the new, transporting Qi from the Middle Jiao to the upper and lower regions."
Gutan Wan (See Phlegm-Fluids chapter); Jingui Fengyin Tang (See Wind-Stroke chapter).
Shujin Bao Gan San (Tendons-Soothing Liver-Nourishing Powder): Treats hemiplegia (left-side paralysis and right-side impairment), tendon and vessel spasms, motor dysfunction of the body, weakness in the legs and feet, dry or damp Hong Kong foot (podagra/foot disorders), and dampness obstructing the meridians that persists for a long time; it promotes the free flow and guidance of various Qi mechanisms.
Formula: Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus, 5 liang), Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soaked in wine), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus, stir-fried), Song Jie (Pinii Resina), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Wu Yao (Linderae Radix), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Wei Ling Xian (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Hu Gu (Pantheris Os, stir-fried in wine; all the above at 2 liang each).
Soak the above herbs in one dou of unadulterated wine for twenty-seven days, sealing tightly. After the time is up, remove the herbs, bake them dry, and grind them into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with the wine used for soaking. When the wine is finished, mix with rice soup for administration.
Yu Jiayan said: "This is a formula for treating wind-dampness knotting within the tendons and vessels, stagnating without dispersing, obstructing righteous Qi and preventing its smooth circulation."
Pingwei San (Peace the Stomach Powder): Treats spleen and stomach disharmony, epigastric and abdominal fullness and distension, acid regurgitation and belching of rotten food, diarrhea and dysentery, malarial fevers, and intolerance to local climate and water.
Formula: Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian, stir-fried), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, both 2 qian, stir-fried), Zhi Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, 1 qian).
Add five slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water, and take orally.
Gua Di San (Melon Seed Powder): For retained food stagnation in the upper wan (upper stomach), use this to induce vomiting, following the principle of "those located above should be expelled upwards."
Formula: Gua Di (Momordicae Semen, stir-fried), Chi Dou (Vigna Angularis, boiled; equal parts).
Grind the above into fine powder. Mix with juice from seven he of garden bean (Dolichoris Semen) and administer one bi of the powder. Alternatively, mix one qian bi with warm sour plum water, inducing vomiting until relief is achieved.
