胃属土,脾之腑也,为仓廪之官,五谷之府,故从田,田乃五谷所出,以为五谷之市也

The Kidney is a Water Zang-organ, storing Jing (Essence) and Zhi (Will). Hua Yuanhua stated: "It is the root of life." Furthermore: "Kidney implies bearing; it governs the bones and bears the affairs of the whole body, thus physical strength and weakness depend on it." The *Jia Yi Jing* states: "Kidney implies guiding; it can guide Qi to penetrate into the bone marrow." The *Zhi Yan* states: "Kidney implies spirit/mystery; it subtly generates all things." (Its association is with the Bones, its luster manifests in the Hair, and its orifices are the two lower openings.)
The Stomach belongs to Earth and is the Fu-organ of the Spleen. It is called the Official of Granaries and the Repository of the Five Grains. Hence, the character for Stomach contains the radical 'Field' (Tian), as fields are where grains grow, serving as a market for them. Additionally, "Stomach" resonates with "Wei" (Defense); when food and water enter the Stomach, their clear essence floats up and emerges from the Lungs, spreading freely to the four limbs and protecting the entire body, sufficient to defend against external pathogens and maintain solidity.
(The character for Gallbladder is composed of 'Zhan', not 'Dan'. 'Tan' sounds like 'Dan' and refers to lip gloss/moisture, which differs from the organ. The current use of 'Dan' for Gallbladder is an error passed down through transmission. The Gallbladder belongs to Wood and is the Fu-organ of the Liver. It is the Official of Uprightness and the Repository of Pure Essence; the Qi of the eleven meridians depends on the Gallbladder. Human courage, timidity, expulsion of evil, and adherence to righteousness are judged here, hence the character uses 'Zhan'. Furthermore, "Gallbladder" resonates with "Dan" (to bear/carry); only with gall (courage) can one bear the affairs of the world. The Liver governs Ren (Benevolence); benevolent people cannot bear to harm, so they rely on the Gallbladder for decision-making. The Gallbladder attaches between the short lobes of the Liver. A benevolent person must necessarily be courageous.)
The Large Intestine is the Official of Transmission, responsible for transformation and excretion. It belongs to Metal and is the Fu-organ of the Lung. The Small Intestine is the Official of Reception and Containment, responsible for transforming substances. It belongs to Fire and is the Fu-organ of the Heart. When humans ingest food and water, the Spleen transforms Qi and sends it upward, while the intestines transform waste and send it downward. This is because "Intestine" resonates with "Chang" (smooth/unobstructed); it serves to smooth the Qi of the Stomach. If the intestines are unobstructed, the person is healthy; otherwise, disease occurs.
The Sanjiao (Triple Burner) refers to the Qi of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Burners. "Jiao" means heat; it refers to the warm heat distributed throughout the cavity, capable of regulating water passages. It is the Fu-organ of the Pericardium and belongs to Fire. If the Upper Burner is dysfunctional, water floods like a high plateau; if the Middle Burner is dysfunctional, water stagnates in the Zhongwan region; if the Lower Burner is dysfunctional, water chaos leads to disorders of urination and defecation. When the Qi of the Sanjiao is harmonious, the collaterals are unobstructed and water passages are smooth, hence it is called the "Official of Ditches and Canals."
