Treat cough with hemoptysis, gradually developing into the syndrome of bone-steaming consumption fever (a consumptive disease characterized by afternoon or night fever, heat in the palms and soles, and irritability in the bones). If the patient has strong stomach qi and abundant righteous qi, with constipation and a forceful pulse, this is excess yang generating internal heat; the treatment method should be cooling and clearing, primarily using Qinggu San (Clearing Bone Decoction). If the patient has weak stomach qi and deficient spleen qi, with loose stools and a deficient, fine pulse, this is yin deficiency causing fever; the treatment method should be nourishing yin, primarily using Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) or Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction). If there is fever due to both qi and blood deficiency, use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) to tonify. If primordial qi is severely deficient, resulting in myriad variable symptoms that are difficult to describe, regardless of the pulse or the specific disease name, only use Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing the Young Decoction), and all symptoms will naturally recede. The classics state: Sweet and warm substances can eliminate great heat. If cold and cool substances are mistakenly used, they will counterattack and damage the vital energy, often leading to untreatable conditions.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 1 qian), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) (0.7 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) (each 1.2 qian), Zhi mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Hu Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each 0.4 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Adding Tongbian (Child's Urine) is particularly effective; it can be added to formulas such as Xiaoyao San, Siwu Tang, and Bazhen Tang.
Xiaoyao San (Formula see "Lei Zhong" section)
Treats liver channel blood deficiency causing irritability, thirst, stabbing pain in the chest and hypochondrium, dizziness, palpitations, flushed cheeks, bitter taste in the mouth, fever, night sweats, poor appetite, and lethargy. It also treats irregular menstruation in women, abdominal distension and pain around the umbilicus, and alternating chills and fever resembling malaria. Furthermore, it treats amenorrhea in unmarried women, phlegm-cough, tidal fever, emaciation, and consumption fever.
Da Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, self-made), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 1.5 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (0.5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Adding Danpi, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Yuzhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), and Fuling (Poria) is highly effective for reducing deficiency heat.
Treats fever and tidal fever due to qi and blood deficiency.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 1 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (0.5 qian), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) (two pieces).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Adding Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) to this formula is named Shiquan Dabu Tang (Perfect Golden Great Tonifying Decoction). Adding Danpi, Hei Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, charred), and Chaihu is named Jiawei Bazhen Tang (Modified Eight Treasure Decoction).
