Specifically treats dysentery in its initial stage, effective regardless of whether it is bloody or white discharge.
Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix), Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) (stir-fried with wine), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chen Song Luo Cha (aged Songluo Tea) (each one jin), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) (stir-fried with wine), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) (stir-fried), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) (stir-fried, each twelve liang).
The above herbs are ground into a fine powder. Each dose is four qian, decocted with water, and taken together with the herb powder; children's dosage is halved. Avoid meat, fish, wheat products, fried foods, and items that cause qi stagnation or trigger qi disorders. Adding Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) four liang to this formula yields even better results.
For treating dysentery in its initial stage characterized by severe abdominal pain that cannot be pressed upon, indicating the presence of retained food accumulation, purgative therapy is appropriate.
Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Nong Po (Moutan Cortex / Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex - *Note: Nong Po usually refers to Houpo/Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex*) (stir-fried with ginger juice, each twelve liang), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (steamed with wine, one jin four liang), Guang Mu Xiang (Vladimiriae Root) (four liang).
Using lotus leaf water, the herbs are processed into pills the size of mung beans. Each dose is three qian, taken with warm water; children take one qian.
Wu Wei Yi Gong San (Five-Ingredient Powder for Extraordinary Merit) (i.e., Liu Jun Zi Tang [Six-Gentleman Decoction] excluding Ban Xia [Pinelliae Rhizoma]. See section on Stroke-like Syndromes).
Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Decoction for Supplementing the Middle and Augmenting the Qi) (See section on Stroke-like Syndromes).
For treating vomiting, regurgitation, and inability to ingest food. Medical texts state: "Inability to ingest food indicates the presence of fire," hence Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is used. If dysentery leads to an inability to eat, it signifies further deficiency of qi.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chuan Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (stir-fried with ginger water, each five fen), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (avoid contact with iron, seven fen), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (three qian), Shi Lian Zi (Nelumbinis Semen) (shelled, referring to those black-shelled seeds from Jianlian), Fu Ling (Poria), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chen Mi (aged rice) (a small pinch), Dong Gua Ren (Benincasae Semen) (shelled, one qian five fen), He Ye Di (Lotus Leaf Stalk) (two pieces).
Decoct with water and take orally.
Fu Zi Li Zhong Tang (Decoction for Warming the Middle and Assisting the Yang with Aconite) (See section on Cold Damage to the Middle Jiao).
Medical texts state: "Excessive dampness leads to five types of diarrhea," clearly indicating that diarrhea belongs to damp pathogenic factors. However, there are cases of damp-heat, damp-cold, food retention, spleen deficiency, and kidney deficiency, all of which can cause diarrhea and require differentiated treatment. For instance, if there is thirst, red urine, and passage of intestinal turbid matter, it is damp-heat. If urine is clear, the mouth feels neutral, and stool contains undigested grains, it is damp-cold. If there is chest fullness and stifling sensation, belching with a rotten odor, acid regurgitation, and foul-smelling stool, it is food retention. If appetite is poor, defecation is frequent, and the complexion is pale, it is spleen deficiency. If diarrhea occurs regularly at dawn (fifth watch), it is kidney deficiency. For treating diarrhea, Shen Zhu San (Divine Efficacy Powder) is the primary formula. For cases accompanied by cold-heat complex or food retention, modify the prescription according to symptoms. For spleen deficiency, use Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang (Amomum and Aucklandia Six-Gentleman Decoction); for kidney deficiency, use Jia Jian Qi Shen Wan (Modified Seven-Gentleman Pills). In general, treating diarrhea requires promoting urination to drain dampness; however, if food retention has not yet resolved, promoting urination is contraindicated. One must wait until the food retention is cleared before promoting urination, which constitutes the correct therapeutic approach.
Shen Zhu San (Divine Efficacy Powder) (See section on Stroke-like Syndromes).
It dries dampness, strengthens the spleen, and eliminates stagnation, making it an excellent medicine for stopping diarrhea. For damp-heat, add Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus); for damp-cold, add Pao Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum) and Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix).
Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang (Amomum and Aucklandia Six-Gentleman Decoction) (See section on Stroke-like Syndromes).
Treats diarrhea caused by spleen deficiency. If complicated by cold, add Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); in severe cases, add Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata).
