To treat persistent cough that does not cease, fearing it may develop into Lao Zhai (chronic consumptive disease).
Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, removed heart) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, removed skin, tip, and double kernels, each 4 qian) Da Tuanyu (Large soft-shelled turtle, weighing over 12 liang, internal organs removed, one whole)
Cook the above herbs together with the turtle until done. Consume the meat along with the broth. Dry the herb dregs by roasting, grind them into powder, boil the turtle bones in water to obtain one cup of liquid, mix with the powder to form pills, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, administered with Maidong Decoction (Ophiopogonis Decoction), three times daily.
Moisten the lungs and stop cough; also treats Fei Wei (lung atrophy/withering).
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen) Ziwan (Asternatis Herba) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, steamed) Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, removed heart) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) Fuling (Poria) Zhen Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, stir-fried with clam powder until granular, each 1 qian) Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, each 3 fen)
Decoct in water and take orally.
Nourish yin and descend fire, resolve phlegm, remove blood stasis, stop cough, calm asthma, protect the lungs, soothe the liver, dissipate wind-heat, kill "corpse parasites" (pathogenic factors causing consumption); this is for Yin deficiency patterns.
Tiantong (Asparagi Radix, removed heart and steamed) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, removed heart and steamed) Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix, washed with wine) Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, steamed and sun-dried nine times) Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, steamed with milk) Baibu (Stemonae Radix, steamed) Shashen (Adenophorae Radix or Glehniae Radix, steamed) Chuan Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, removed heart and steamed) Zhen Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, each 1 liang) Fuling (Poria, steamed with milk) Ta Gan (Leporis Liver) Guang Sanqi (Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma, each 5 qian)
Boil 2 liang of Baijuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos, peduncle removed) and 2 liang of Sangye (Mori Folium, frosted) into a paste. Dissolve the Ejiao into the paste, mix with the herbs, add a little refined honey, and form pills sized like marbles. Take one pill per dose, hold in mouth to dissolve and swallow, three times daily.
Blood deficiency with hyperactive fire, exacerbated by consuming strong alcohol and fried/roasted foods, causes heat qi to surge and force blood to move recklessly, termed Yang Cheng Yin (Yang invading Yin). The treatment method should be to clear heat and descend rebellious qi, primarily using Sisheng Wan (Four Raw Ingredients Pill) etc. After hematemesis stops, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) to tonify. If the pulse is fine, deep, and slow, with moist mouth and tongue, and the patient has a constitutionally cold and deficient body type, or has contracted wind-cold, this is described as "cold heaven and frozen earth, water congealing into ice," termed Yin Cheng Yang (Yin invading Yang). The treatment method should be to warm and disperse, primarily using Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction). In treating blood disorders, regardless of yin or yang patterns, protecting the spleen and stomach is the best strategy for successful recovery. Indeed, the spleen and stomach are the gateway to fortune or misfortune. Medical texts state: Damage descending from above involves one damage to the lung, two damages to the liver, three damages to the spleen; if damage exceeds the spleen, it is incurable. Damage ascending from below involves one damage to the kidney, two damages to the heart, three damages to the stomach; if damage exceeds the stomach, it is incurable. What is meant by damage exceeding the spleen and stomach is vomiting and diarrhea. The ancients said, "Regardless of yin/yang or cold/heat, first settle and harmonize the spleen and stomach." Danxi stated: "For all blood disorders, one must use formulas similar to Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) to conclude treatment." His words contain profound truth. However, tonifying the spleen and nourishing the stomach relies not solely on medicine, but on appropriate diet. The *Nan Jing* states: "For those damaged in the spleen, regulate their diet and adapt to temperature changes." Indeed, dietary nourishment far surpasses medicinal effects. Those who treat consumption diseases in the world can gain insight from this.
