Before a woman goes into labor, taking one or two doses of this prescription will naturally facilitate delivery. If encountering malpresentation (such as transverse or breech position) or failure to deliver after several days, administering one or two doses promptly yields immediate results. It eternally rescues pregnant women from the disaster of dystocia and constantly ensures the auspicious safety of both mother and child.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed with wine, 1.5 qian), Chuanbeimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae, 1 qian), Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei, 0.8 qian), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, stir-fried with wine, 1.2 qian; use 1 qian in winter), Tusizi (Semen Cuscutae, 1.4 qian), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, stir-fried with ginger juice, 0.7 qian), Aye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, 0.7 qian), Jingjiesui (Herba Schizonepetae Spica, 0.8 qian), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, stir-fried with flour, 0.6 qian), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 1.3 qian), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii, 0.5 qian).
Add two zhong of water and three slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct until eight fen of liquid remains. Take warm on an empty stomach.
This prescription has circulated widely within and outside China, and its efficacy is invariably confirmed by users. However, few understand the subtlety of its formulation, leading to equal parts doubt and belief. Therefore, I explain it thus: In newly pregnant women, the fetal qi is complete and solidified, the abdominal wall is tight and narrow, and the qi and blood envelop the fetus, making it difficult to move. This prescription employs the method of "supporting/expanding" (Cheng Fa). Danggui, Chuanxiong, and Baishao nourish blood and invigorate blood circulation; Houpu removes blood stasis. They are used to expand the blood vessels, preventing lochia from causing blockage. Qianghuo and Jingjie shu-wei (release the exterior via the Taiyang channel); they provide support from the back. The Taiyang meridian is the longest; once the Taiyang is regulated, all other meridians are regulated. Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, note: text mentions Zhishi earlier but Zhike here, both Citrus fruits for moving qi) disperses stagnant qi and provides support from the front, ensuring that fetal qi remains restrained without risk of obstruction. Aye warms the uterus and stimulates uterine movement, rendering the fetus agile. Chuanbei and Tusizi best facilitate fetal positioning and smooth delivery, providing overall support to the fetal qi, thereby enhancing natural vitality. Huangqi is added to support Yuanqi (Primary Qi); when Yuanqi is robust, there is sufficient strength for transformation and movement. Shengjiang unblocks the spirit, eliminates filth, dispels cold, and stops vomiting, thereby supporting Zhengqi (Upright Qi) and stabilizing Stomach qi. Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) harmonizes the various herbs, allowing them to complement each other effectively, thus completing the miraculous effect of the "supporting/expanding" method. This is truly a supreme excellent prescription, yet people do not know how to use it. Even if used, without understanding the ingenuity of its formulation, one remains bewildered. Hence, I elaborate on it thoroughly to awaken students of medicine.
