During pregnancy, edema and fullness of the fetus are named "Zi Zhong" (Fetal Edema), also known as "Zi Qi". The symptoms mostly belong to obstruction by the fetal sac, preventing the free flow of fluid retention; or it is due to Spleen deficiency failing to control water, leading to fluid accumulation. The general treatment principle: for fetal water obstruction, use Wupi Yin (Five-Bark Decoction) added with Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Fuling (Poria) as the main formula; for Spleen deficiency failing to control water, use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) as the main formula. For swelling above the waist, sweating method is suitable, adding Qinjiao (Gentianae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix). For swelling below the waist, promoting urination is suitable, adding Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), and Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix). Once fetal water flows smoothly, delivery will be easy and smooth; treatment should be initiated in advance, not waiting for spontaneous resolution after childbirth.

Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) (see Stroke-like Syndromes).
During pregnancy, spontaneous leakage of breast milk is named "Ru Qi" (Breast Milk Weeping); children born under this condition often fail to survive. However, I believe this is due to Qi and Blood deficiency failing to contain and regulate fluids. Using Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) for frequent supplementation allows the child to thrive. Medical principles possess the power of tonification and the ability to assist natural transformation; how can one stick to common sayings and limit oneself?

There are four methods for nursing care during impending labor: First, proper nourishment. One should calm the mind and eliminate anxious thoughts, avoiding anger. Regular movement is necessary; one should not sit still, sleep excessively, overeat, drink too much sweet wine, or eat miscellaneous items. Frequently eating millet porridge to relieve hunger and thirst is best. In hot weather, choose a cool place in advance to avoid heat-induced fainting. In cold weather, keep the room warm to prevent blood cold. Proper nursing ensures smooth delivery. Second, selecting reliable assistance. One must invite an experienced midwife in advance and prepare necessary supplies. During labor, avoid crowd noise to prevent maternal panic. Only two elderly women should support her, allowing her to lean on objects while standing. When tired, she should lie supine with pillows supporting her legs, waiting patiently until amniotic fluid arrives and severe, tight pain occurs in both the lower back and abdomen. This indicates the fetus has detached from its original position. Let the mother lie supine again to allow the fetus to turn, with the head facing the birth canal. With slight effort, the baby will be born. Human birth is a natural creation of Heaven; no artificial manipulation is needed, only following its natural course. Third, medication. Women who have just given birth have solid organ Qi and tight fetal sacs. In the eighth month of pregnancy, it is advisable to take Baochan Wuyou Tang (Preserve Birth Without Worries Decoction) for two to three doses. Take another two to three doses at the onset of labor to open the pathway, facilitating easier birth. If excessive early pushing causes premature rupture of membranes, or if labor persists for days causing fatigue and exhaustion of Middle Qi, Jiawei Bazhen Tang (Modified Eight Treasures Decoction) should be taken to boost strength. Multiparous women should especially take this medicine in advance. Additionally, Huatuo Shunsheng Dan (Hua Tuo's Smooth Delivery Pill) should be administered only when labor pains involve both the lower back and abdomen simultaneously. Give one or two pills, washed down with decoction of Foshe San (Buddha's Hand Powder). Regarding verification of labor signs: lower back pain without abdominal pain means labor has not started; abdominal pain without lower back pain means labor has not started. True labor begins only when there is severe, tight pain in both the lower back and abdomen. If progress stalls, administer Shunsheng Dan immediately, which is timely. Fourth, auspicious directions. When arranging the产妇's bed curtains and storing clothes, select the "Moon Void" direction. In odd-numbered months, the Moon Void is in the Ren-Bing directions; in even-numbered months, it is in the Jia-Geng directions. One must clearly determine the direction.
