When a fetus fails to grow properly during pregnancy, it is often due to the mother's pre-existing diseases, improper daily life habits, or inadequate care, resulting in damage to the Spleen and Stomach and weakness of Qi and Blood, thereby preventing normal fetal development. The treatment principle should be to eliminate pre-existing diseases, tonify the Spleen and Stomach, cultivate Qi and Blood, combined with appropriate care, so that the fetus will naturally grow. To tonify the Spleen and Stomach, Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Flavor Extraordinary Power Powder) is the primary formula. To cultivate Qi and Blood, Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) is the primary formula. To eliminate pre-existing diseases, treatment should follow the specific symptoms.
Half-abortion refers to minor abortion. It occurs when the fetus falls out at three or five months of gestation, or when labor begins before full term; both are termed minor abortion. Minor abortion is more severe than full-term delivery because full-term delivery is like a ripe melon falling naturally, whereas minor abortion is like forcibly breaking the root and stem, which is indeed more severe. During the period before or approaching delivery, the priority is to calm the fetus, using Antai Yin (Calming Fetus Drink) as the primary formula. After delivery, if there is abdominal pain that refuses pressure, this indicates Blood stasis; the treatment principle is to remove stasis and generate new tissue, using Danggui Zelan Tang (Angelica and Lanceleaf Sedum Decoction) as the primary formula. If bleeding persists after minor abortion, accompanied by irritability, thirst, red face, and a deficient and minute pulse, this indicates severe deficiency of Qi and Blood; Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) with Paojiang (Prepared Ginger) should be used to tonify. If abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea occur, this indicates Spleen and Stomach deficiency and cold; Xiangsha Liujunzi Tang (Aucklandia and Amomum Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Rongui (Cinnamon Bark) should be used to warm. For the mother herself, it is essential to carefully avoid wind and cold, regulate diet, and take more tonifying medicines to consolidate Qi and Blood, preventing the recurrence of habitual miscarriages where each pregnancy ends in damage and difficulty in nurturing. One must beware and be cautious.
"Zifan" (Fetal Irritability) refers to mental irritability and restlessness during pregnancy. Ancient texts state: At four months of pregnancy, the embryo receives the Ministerial Fire of Shaoyin to nourish Essence; at six months, it receives the Ministerial Fire of Shaoyang to nourish Qi. The syndrome of Zifan generally arises from this. I believe that when a woman is pregnant, both the Sovereign Fire and Ministerial Fire gather to nourish the fetus, not only during the fourth and sixth months. The general treatment principle is: for cases where excessive fire causes internal heat and irritability, Danzhuye Tang (Lophatherum Decoction) is used. For cases where Qi stagnation and Phlegm condensation cause chest tightness and restlessness, Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) is used, added with Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Sugen (Perilla Stem), and Zhike (Aurantium Fruit). For cases of Spleen and Stomach weakness with nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, and irritability, Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) is used. If Zifan is not properly managed, it may lead to restless fetus.
