Gan Han (Cold Invasion) refers to contracting Wind-Cold pathogens. There are cases of Gan Han throughout the four seasons, characterized by a floating or tight pulse, headache, fever, absence of sweating, aversion to cold, or uncontrolled coughing; this represents a mild form of Shang Han (Cold Damage). The primary formula is Sang Fang Tang (Mulberry Leaf and Saposhnikovia Decoction). This is the common method used in secular practice at that time; for severe cases, treatment should still follow the methods for Shang Han.

Decoct with water until half a cup remains, take warm, cover with clothing to induce slight sweating.
Shang Feng (Wind Strike) occurs due to internal deficiency allowing external pathogenic invasion. The patient typically has dampness in the Lung Meridian; when Wind-Cold closes the skin and hair pores, Lung Qi becomes obstructed. Symptoms include clear nasal discharge, frequent sneezing, and after three to five days or seven days, expectoration of greenish-yellow purulent-like sputum from the mouth and nose. At this stage, the Lung organ itself is not yet damaged; if the sputum does not exit, Lung damage will occur leading to death. Do not neglect it because the disease appears mild. The primary formula is Zi Su Jiang Ling Tang (Perilla, Ginger, and Poria Decoction).

The Classics state: "If one is injured by Cold in winter, one will surely suffer from Warmth diseases in spring." It also states: "If one fails to store Essence in winter, one will surely suffer from Warmth diseases in spring."
Generally, during winter, humans should comply with the command of Cold-Water to store Yang Qi. If Yin Essence fails to be stored, Ministerial Fire leaks out, the root of Yang is not secure, leading to excessive Fire and deficient Water, damaging Body Fluids. When exposed to pathogens in spring and summer, Warm-Heat diseases arise. These symptoms differ from Shang Han. In early Shang Han, although external pathogens are present, there is no internal Heat initially. In early Warm diseases, both interior and exterior are hot. Headache, fever, and spontaneous sweating resemble Shang Han, but thirst only begins in Shang Han when it transmits to the Yangming channel, whereas in Warm diseases, fever and thirst appear immediately upon onset, accompanied by dry mouth, mental restlessness, rapid and agitated pulse, aversion to heat rather than cold, and worsening heat in the afternoon, which differs significantly from Shang Han. If the pathogen is on the surface of the Six Channels and has not entered the Fu or Zang organs, the treatment principle is clearing and resolving using Fang Feng Jie Wen Tang (Saposhnikovia and Wind-Resolving Decoction), modified according to symptoms. For cases with only cough and mild body heat, use Sang Xing Gan Jie Tang (Mulberry Leaf, Apricot Kernel, Licorice, and Platycodon Decoction). If the pathogen enters the Yangming channel, causing Lung Heat and fluid exhaustion, the principle is clearing Heat and generating fluids, using Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang (Ginseng and White Tiger Decoction). If it has entered the Yangming Fu organs, causing dryness and constipation in the intestines and stomach, the principle is purging Heat and nourishing Yin, using Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) with modifications.

If entering the Yangming channel, with body heat, eye pain, dry nose, inability to sleep, chest dryness, and thirst, remove Fang Feng, Sang Ye, Jie Geng, Xing Ren; add Radix Puerariae Lobatae (Ge Gen, 葛根); if heat is severe, add Radix Scrophulariae (Yuan Shen, 元参); if heat is even more severe, add Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao, 石膏); if vomiting occurs, add Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Ban Xia, 半夏). If entering the Shaoyang channel, with chest and hypochondriac pain, deafness, bitter taste in mouth, dry throat, and thirst, remove Fang Feng, Sang Ye, Jie Geng, Xing Ren; add Bupleuri Radix (Chai Hu, 柴胡), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin, 黄芩), Ban Xia; if heat is severe, add Yuan Shen. If the intestines and stomach have not reached a state of dryness and constipation, use only the method of nourishing Yin, do not use Cheng Qi formulas. Even if constipation is not severe, wait until after the six-day cycle of the channels is complete, when internal Fu-heat is solidified, then use purging Heat and nourishing Yin methods to clear it with one purge. If constipation is very severe, urgent purging may be performed within three to five days.
