[Outline of Qi Drum]
The drum-like distension syndrome originally arises from the accumulation of qi stagnation. The abdomen becomes hard as iron and stone, indicating a non-mild condition. Treatment should focus on resolving depression (relieving qi stagnation) and eliminating dampness, while also clearing wind to achieve efficacy.
Guizhi Jiangsha Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Ginger, and Amomum Decoction)
(Attached Prescription Note)
Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Xia Kuang (Pinellia Tuber), Jiang (Dried Ginger), Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) are combined with Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig). Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Shao Yao (Peony Root), and Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) are administered. This prescription can treat qi drum once formed; its method of soothing the Liver (Wood) and supporting the Spleen is appropriate.
Weiling Tang (Stomach and Poria Decoction)
(Attached Prescription Note)
Ling (Poria) and Fu Ling (Polyporus), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) are combined; Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Jiang (Dried Ginger), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) are combined with Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig). It has merit in guiding qi and promoting urination, and can generally treat drum-like distension once formed.
Liujunzi Tang Syndrome (Six Gentlemen Decoction Syndrome)
(Prescription see Malaria chapter)
The syndrome belongs to Spleen deficiency with failure of transportation and transformation. When qi drum forms, treatment should not be delayed. Using Liujunzi Tang is truly ingenious; combining attack (draining excess) and tonification yields extraordinary effects.
[Outline of Water Swelling]
Water swelling syndrome originally arises from the retrograde flow of water fluids. Flood-like overflow leads to initial edema formation. Treatment should employ sweating to release the exterior and promoting urination to unblock, followed by transforming True Yang to calm the patient.
Linggui Mahuang Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, and Ephedra Decoction)
(Attached Prescription Note)
When water swelling is initially formed, sweating is appropriate. Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Mahuang (Ephedra Herb) resolve the exterior with miraculous effect. Fu Ling (Poria) and Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) specialize in eliminating dampness. Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) and Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) descend rebellious qi, while Gan Cao (Licorice Root) tonifies the Spleen.
Linggui Ejiao Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Decoction)
(Attached Prescription Note)
When swelling requires promoting urination, Er Ling (Poria and Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), and Xie (likely referring to Ze Xie or similar diuretic) are appropriately used. To transform Yin, only Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) is exquisite; to support True Yang, reliance is placed on Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig).
Xiao Qinglong Tang Syndrome & Zhenwu Tang Syndrome (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction Syndrome & True Warrior Decoction Syndrome)
(Both prescriptions appear in the Shanghan Treatise chapter)
If water resides in the Taiyang (Greater Yang) stage, using Xiao Qinglong Tang for sweating is appropriate. If it enters the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) stage, qi transformation is required; decocting Zhenwu Tang yields particularly miraculous effects.
Fangji Huangqi Tang (Stephania Root and Astragalus Decoction)
(Attached Prescription Note)
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Da Zao (Jujube Fruit) are combined with Huang Qi (Astragalus Root); adding Fang Ji (Stephania Root) makes it suitable for removing dampness. This medicine can treat Fengshui (Wind-Water) syndrome; ancient legislative methods are always miraculous.
Fangji Fuling Tang (Stephania Root and Poria Decoction)
(Attached Prescription Note)
Pi Shui (Skin Water) originates from swelling of the four limbs. Medicines must include Fang Ji (Stephania Root) and Huang Qi (Astragalus Root). Fuling (Poria) eliminates dampness, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) cultivates Earth (Spleen), and Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) is used to generate True Yang.
Guizhi Gancao Maxing Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, Ephedra, Asarum, and Aconite Decoction)
(Attached Prescription Note)
What prescription drives out Zheng Shui (True Water)? Xin (Asarum), Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root), and Mahuang (Ephedra Herb) excel at transforming Yang. Adding Jiang (Ginger), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) specializes in restoring vital energy.
Guizhi Lingze Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Poria, and Alisma Decoction)
(Attached Prescription Note)
Combining Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig); Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Fuling (Poria), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), and Xing Ren (Apricot Seed) are administered. Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), and Fang Ji (Stephania Root) are suitably added together. All types of drum-like distension can be treated with extraordinary efficacy.
