[General Principles of Phlegm-Fluids] The formation of phlegm-fluids in the chest has its causes. This disease often arises from dysfunction of the Lung and Kidney organs. Qi and fluids stagnate within the body without being transformed, occasionally causing panting and coughing that startles the patient.
Xiao Ban Xia Jia Fu Ling Tang (Minor Pinellia Decoction with Added Poria)
(Attached Syndrome Description) When phlegm-fluids stagnate in the body causing distension and fullness, the treatment method should employ Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Fu Ling (Poria). These ingredients can comprehensively resolve the turbid qi filling the chest. With few medicinal ingredients, the efficacy is remarkable.
Jiang Ling Ban Xia Tang (Ginger, Poria, and Pinellia Decoction)
(Syndrome same as above; Formula see "Heart and Abdominal Pain" section)
Xiao Qing Long Tang Syndrome (Minor Green Dragon Decoction Syndrome)
(Formula see *Shanghan Lun* section) Internal retention of phlegm-fluids is a non-trivial condition. Coughing is accompanied by panting and rebellious Qi ascending. What medicine should be used for this syndrome? Administer Xiao Qing Long Tang to bring the patient to stability.
She Gan Ma Huang Tang (Belamcanda and Ephedra Decoction)
(Attached Syndrome Description) Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) reaches the exterior to dispel cold. Zi Wan (Asteris Radix), Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos), and She Gan (Belamcae Rhizoma) are combined. Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) is further supplemented with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma). Treatment for panting and coughing due to phlegm brings peace to the condition.
Gui Ling Gan Zhu Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Poria, Licorice, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction)
(Attached Syndrome Description) Stagnant water-fluids transform into phlegm. Treatment requires Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Fu Ling (Poria), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). To support Yang and eliminate dampness, one must seek the root. Who among legislators understands the profound principles?
Zhen Wu Tang Syndrome (True Warrior Decoction Syndrome)
(Formula see *Shanghan Lun* section) When Kidney Yang fails to transform and water stagnates, it rises upward as phlegm, creating a critical situation. The treatment principle must address the root cause. Decocting and administering Zhen Wu Tang is most suitable.
Shi Zao Tang (Ten Jujube Decoction)
(Formula see *Shanghan Lun* section) When water-fluids stagnate within the Zang-Fu organs and reside superiorly in the chest and diaphragm, rapid purgation is indicated. Draining the Qi level is a truly excellent method. Administering Shi Zao Tang yields great merit.
Zhu Ling Tang Syndrome (Polyporus Decoction Syndrome)
(Formula see *Shanghan Lun* section) When accumulated fluids stagnate in the umbilical and abdominal regions, draining via the water passages is a particularly ingenious method. Using Zhu Ling Tang is truly miraculous; its profound subtleties are rarely known by the world.
Wu Ling San Syndrome (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria Syndrome)
(Formula see *Shanghan Lun* section) The chest inherently contains stagnant water-fluids, which gradually infiltrate the collaterals and meridians. To drain through the sweat pores, what medicine should be used? For matching syndromes, Wu Ling San is especially appropriate.
Gua Di San Syndrome (Melon Sepal Powder Syndrome)
(Formula see *Shanghan Lun* section) There are various types of phlegm-fluids in the abdomen. If they remain in the Stomach, eating becomes difficult. The vomiting method must utilize Gua Di (Cucumeris Fructus). After administration, relief comes suddenly.
[General Principles of Cough] To understand the origin of cough, one must clearly distinguish between external contraction and internal injury. One must fully identify cold, heat, excess, and deficiency. Only then can prescription formulation be precise and match the syndrome.
Er Chen Tang Plus Su Ye, Xing Ren, Bei Mu Tang (Two-Cured Decoction plus Perilla Leaf, Apricot Kernel, and Pinellia Ternata Bulb Decoction)
(Attached Syndrome Description) For external contractions requiring warm dispersal, Er Chen Tang can be used. Adding Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), and Su Ye (Perillae Folium) helps eliminate dampness and disperse wind, making it suitable for treating cough.
Xiao Qing Long Tang Syndrome & Xiao Chai Hu Tang Syndrome (Minor Green Dragon Decoction Syndrome & Minor Bupleurum Decoction Syndrome)
(Both formulas see *Shanghan Lun* section) Internal retention of water-fluids is depressed and difficult to circulate. Upon contracting wind-cold, cough immediately arises. Using Xiao Qing Long Tang for warm dispersal is effective; using Xiao Chai Hu Tang for clearing and resolving brings the patient to stability.
Xiao Jian Zhong Tang Syndrome (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction Syndrome)
(Formula see *Shanghan Lun* section) Internal injury cough is difficult to settle. When Qi and Blood are deficient and cold is present, Xiao Jian Zhong Tang can originally treat it. Tonifying the Spleen, releasing the exterior, and soothing the Liver provides comfort.
Mai Men Dong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction)
(Attached Syndrome Description) Fire rebellion injures Body Fluids, leading to deep-seated cough. Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) are combined. Adding Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa) and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) tonifies Qi, eliminates pathogens, and assists Yin.
Qian Jin Mai Men Dong Tang Syndrome (Thousand-Gold Ophiopogon Decoction Syndrome)
Whether contracted from wind-cold or caused by internal injury, heat often attacks the Lung with overwhelming force. Sometimes cough includes blood in sputum. In severe cases, this formula is especially appropriate.
Qian Jin Mai Men Dong Tang (Thousand-Gold Ophiopogon Decoction)
Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) and Sang Ye (Mori Folium) can be decocted together. Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix), Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) are included. Cough caused by excessive fire will surely heal.
