(Exterior syndrome has resolved, yet heat resides in the interior) In cold damage (Shanghan), the pulse is slippery and cold extremities appear intermittently. Once the exterior syndrome resolves, it becomes clear that interior heat has formed. Decoction of Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) is truly applicable here, instantly clearing the pathogenic fire in the chest.
Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction)
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) possesses strong power to extinguish fire; Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) combined with it feels even cooler. Boiled with Jingmi (Oryza Sativa) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), this formula is excellent for expelling pathogens and eliminating heat.
(Exterior syndrome has resolved, yet heat resides in the interior) Although the exterior syndrome of cold damage has resolved, the patient remains uneasy. Symptoms include dryness, thirst, irritability, and aversion to cold on the back. Baihu Jia Renshen Tang (White Tiger Decoction plus Ginseng) can be used; it generates fluids and assists Qi, acting as a miraculous elixir.
Baihu Jia Renshen Tang (White Tiger Decoction plus Ginseng)
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) are good at clearing Lung Metal heat. Decoction of Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Jingmi (Oryza Sativa) further aids Yin. Adding Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) for supplementation is even more wonderful; this immortal prescription can resolve restlessness and irritability.
(Exterior syndrome has not resolved, yet water retention resides in the interior) Fever persists beyond the transmission cycle without resolving, accompanied by irritability. Both exterior and interior syndromes of wind-strike remain present. The patient desires to drink but vomits immediately after swallowing; this condition is named "Water Reversal" (Shuini).
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria)
The exterior cold has not gone, and water retention stops suddenly. Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) are decocted together with Fu Ling (Poria) and Lingzhi (Polyporus). To release the exterior, many drugs are unnecessary; a single herb of Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) is miraculously effective in unblocking.
Lingui Jianggan Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Ginger, and Licorice Decoction)
(Attached Syndrome: Exterior syndrome has not resolved, yet water retention resides in the interior) Profuse sweating without thirst indicates that body fluids have not been damaged. The formulation of Linggui Jianggan Tang introduces a new approach. When symptoms subside, only mild drugs should be used; promoting circulation between exterior and interior yields effects like divinity.
When the disease is in the Yang meridians, improper sweating therapy causes millet-like papules on the skin and increases irritability. Although the patient thinks of drinking water, it is not true thirst. If Wenhe San (Clam Shell Powder) does not cure it, Baisan (White Powder) should be administered.
Wenhe San (Clam Shell Powder)
First, grind Wenhe (Concha Meretricis) finely; it must be taken with hot water. If the illness does not heal, there are still methods: choose between Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) and Baisan (White Powder) according to discretion.
Baisan (White Powder)
Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) should be combined with Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix); clearing Lung Metal and dispersing stagnation is most suitable. Warm-moving Badou (Crotonis Fructus) is truly miraculous; the interplay of cold and heat makes the therapeutic principle unique.
(The exterior recedes, and heat binds in the blood level) Blood accumulation (Xuxue) forms, presenting with manic behavior; thus, we know heat binds in the Bladder. Only after the exterior pathogen resolves should purgation be applied; Taoren Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction to Order the Qi) must be used.
Taoren Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction to Order the Qi)
Blood stasis congealing in the lower abdomen requires urgent attack; Taoren (Persicae Semen) breaks blood stasis with remarkable efficacy. Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) cleanse filth and specialize in clearing heat; Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) soothe the Liver and tonify the Middle.
(The exterior recedes, and heat binds in the blood level) The exterior pathogen enters internally, leaving no way to resolve it from the exterior. The pulse is slightly deep, and there is no Chest Bind (Jie Xiong). Heat in the Lower Jiao causes hardness and fullness; blood stasis in the abdomen cannot be tolerated.
