[Hua Tuo] For treating *Chuan Shi Lao* (Transmitted Corpse Consumption), use Taiyi Mingyue Dan. The symptoms of this disease include emaciation, sallow complexion, vomiting, and restless coughing. First, burn *Anxi Xiang* (Benzoin Resin) until smoke is produced, and have the patient inhale it. If they do not cough, it is not *Chuan Shi*, and this medicine should not be used. If coughing persists after the smoke enters, it is indeed *Chuan Shi*, and this medicine is appropriate.
Realgar, *Muxiang* (Aquilaria Wood) (each half liang); Tianlinggai (Scalp Bone, roasted, one liang); Qingfen (Calomel, one fen); Biejia (Turtle Shell, roasted with lard, one liang); Tushì (Rabbit Feces, two liang).
Grind the above into powder. Use one dasheng of Fa Jiu (Medicinal Wine) and half a fen of Dahuang (Rhubarb) powder, boil into an ointment/paste, add the previous powders to form pills the size of a tung seed, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabar). Take at the beginning of the fifth watch (approx. 1-3 AM), without others knowing. Dissolve one pill in Tongbian (Child's Urine) mixed with wine. After walking about ten li, worms must be vomited up, resembling thin rush stems, or later rotting melon seeds, or toads; shapes vary. If ineffective, take again the next day, continuing until efficacy is observed.
[Zi Ting] For treating *Chuan Shi Fu Shi* (Transmitted Corpse Hidden Corpse), which involves worms, one must fumigate the patient's hand with Ruxiang (Frankincense). Then, place the palm upward, cover it with a cloth, and fumigate for a long time. Long hairs (about one cun) will grow on the back of the hand. If white and yellow, it is treatable; if red, slightly difficult; if blue-black, fatal. This method is very effective. If no hair grows after long fumigation, it is not this syndrome but rather *Lao Zhai* (Consumption) deficiency, so use the previously mentioned Ginseng warming and tonifying medicines.
[Selected Methods] Method for extracting worms from *Chuan Shi Fu Shi Lao*.
Tianlinggai (Scalp Bone, cut in cross shape, roasted with lard and powdered, three qian); Anxi Xiang (Benzoin Resin, half liang); Hufen Gu (Tiger Excrement/Bone? Note: Text says "Hu Fen Gu", likely Tiger Dung or related, human bone preferred, animal bone secondary, vinegar-roasted half liang); Biejia (Turtle Shell, nine-ribbed large ones, vinegar-roasted, one liang); Taoren (Peach Kernel, peeled and core removed, two qian half); Shexiang (Musk, separately ground); Binglang (Betel Nut, one qian, powdered); Qinghao Shao (Artemisia Annua Tip, six liang); Chi (Fermented Soybean, three hundred grains); Congtou (Green Onion Head, one hundred twenty roots); Tongbian (Child's Urine, half bowl); Fengye (Maple Leaf, twenty-one leaves); Tao Liu Dongnan Zhi (Peach and Willow branches from southeast direction, chopstick thickness, seven strips each, seven cun long).
First, decoct Qinghao, Peach/Willow branches, Maple leaves, and Green Onion heads in two guan sheng of water until half dry. Strain. Add Tianlinggai, Hufen Gu, Biejia, Anxi Xiang, and Tongbian. Decoct to obtain juice, strain again. The yield should be about four or five he. Grind Binglang and Shexiang evenly, mix to form one dose. Take on an empty stomach in the morning, cover with blankets to induce sweating. Wipe sweat with white paper to check for fine worms, then throw into fire. Worms will be expelled shortly. Burn any worms found in high fire and discard in flowing water. Do not let the patient know about the medication. After half a month, when Qi and Blood are restored, administer another dose. Repeat according to previous methods three times; stop when no worms are found. Regulate with nutritious diet, and the disease will heal spontaneously. (This formula must contain Afwei (Asafoetida) half qian.)
[Anonymous] Another Formula
Sangzhi (Mulberry Twig), Liuzhi (Willow Twig), Shiliuzhi (Pomegranate Twig), Taozhi (Peach Twig), Meizhi (Plum Twig) (each seven stems, four cun long); Qingsong (Young Pine, a small handful).
Decoct the above in one and a half sheng of Tongbian (Child's Urine) with seven stems of Congbai (White Part of Green Onion, heads and leaves removed) until reduced by half. Strain. Separately add Anxi Xiang (Benzoin Resin) and Afwei (Asafoetida), each one fen. Decoct until one zhong remains. Filter and strain. Mix with Bansha (Vermilion/Cinnabar) powder half qian, Binglang (Betel Nut) powder one fen, and Shexiang (Musk) one zi. Divide into two doses. Take one dose at the beginning of the fifth watch, and the second dose at three points past the fifth watch. By Si hour (9-11 AM), worms will be expelled. Red color indicates treatability; blue/black indicates untreatability. Upon expulsion, consume thin congee and keep warm. Avoid flour, noodles, raw/cold, and toxic foods. Preparation must be done on an auspicious day; cats, dogs, mourners in mourning clothes, and women with impure conditions must not see it.
[Jisheng Fang] Shenren Afwei San (Divine Person Asafoetida Powder) treats *Gu Zheng Chuan Shi* (Bone-stealing Transmitted Corpse) and other alternating chills and fever, emaciation, fatigue, wheezing, and coughing.
Afwei (Asafoetida, three qian); Qinghao (Artemisia Annua, a handful, ground); Northeastern Taozhi (Peach Branch, a handful, finely cut); Gancao (Licorice Root, sized like the patient's middle finger, sliced finely, left side for males, right for females).
Soak the herbs overnight in two and a half sheng of Tongbian (Child's Urine). Next morning, decoct to obtain one dasheng. Take warm on an empty stomach, divided into three doses. Each time, mix in three qian of Binglang (Betel Nut) powder. After walking about ten li, take another dose. Males' illnesses are decocted by females, and females' illnesses by males. During preparation, avoid mourners, pregnant women, patients, and foul-smelling animals like chickens and dogs. After taking, avoid greasy, damp wheat noodles, raw/cold, and hard foods. After one or two doses, worms will be vomited or purged; no need to take remaining medicine. If no vomiting or purging occurs, finish the entire dose. Pathogens in the upper jiao cause vomiting; those in the lower jiao cause purging. Expulsion of worms resembling horse tails or human hair indicates cure. If the patient feels weak in the five zang organs and unsettled soul/spirit after medication, tonify with Bai Fuling Tang.
Bai Fuling (Poria, one qian); Renshen (Ginseng, five qian); Yuanzhi (Polygala Root, two qian, heart removed); Longgu (Dragon Bone); Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, each two qian); Gancao (Licorice Root, three qian); Shengdi (Rehmannia Root, four qian); Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, four qian, heart removed); Xijiao Mo (Rhinoceros Horn Powder, five qian); Dazao (Jujube, seven pieces).
Decoct in two da zhan of water until eight he remains. Divide into three doses, take warm. One dose after walking about ten li. Continue to avoid wind and cold. If still uneasy, prepare another dose every other day. These medicinal baits must be taken continuously.
[Luo] Xijiao Ziheche Wan (Rhinoceros Horn Placenta Pill) treats *Chuan Shi Lao* (Transmitted Corpse Consumption), effective within three months. Other consumption syndromes require only a few doses.
Ziheche (Human Placenta, one piece, soaked in rice wash water overnight, washed clean and dried); Biejia (Turtle Shell, roasted with lard); Jiegeng (Platycodon Root); Huhuanglian (Coptis/Fake Coptis); Baishao (White Peony Root); Dahuang (Rhubarb); Baigupi Xin (Inner Bark of Drum Skin, vinegar-roasted); Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb, heart removed); Longdancao (Gentian Root); Huangyaozi (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome); Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) (each of the above two qian half); Mangxiao (Mirabilite); Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn); Pengzhu (Curcuma Zedoaria, each one qian half); Zhusha (Cinnabar, two qian).
Grind into fine powder. Make pills with refined honey, size of tung seeds, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabar). Take thirty to forty pills with warm wine on an empty stomach.
[Benshi Fang] Ge Hong said: Gui Zhu (Ghost Transmission) is one of the Wu Shi (Five Corpses) transmission diseases. Furthermore, various ghost evils causing harm have variations ranging from thirty-six to ninety-nine types. Generally, it causes dripping/sweating, lethargy, silence, precise location of pain unknown, and aversion everywhere. Over years and months, it gradually leads to stagnation and death. It transmits to others, potentially wiping out a family. Upon recognizing these signs, urgently treat with one liver of Otter (Ta Gan), dried in shade, powdered, taken with water using a fang cun bi measure, three times daily. Effective. If unsure, continue taking. This formula is divine and excellent. A Daoist priest at Tianqing Temple, rigorous in his examinations, once had a woman submit a petition stating her husband was possessed. The spirit spoke through him: "It is not I who harm him, but another ghost, caused by his declining fate." It stated it had formed a shape in the lungs, eating the lung channels, causing hemoptysis and hoarseness. The priest whipped the spirit asking if it could achieve immortality. After silence and further whipping, it replied: "I fear only otter claw powder taken with wine, which would remove me." The family followed this advice, and the patient recovered. This was witnessed by me. Investigating the illness, it is similar. Otter claws are likely related to otter liver.
[Zhouhou Fang] Treats Shi Zhu (Corpse Transmission) and Gui Zhu (Ghost Transmission) diseases. Use fifty Tao Ren (Peach Kernels), crush them, boil in water to obtain four sheng. Take all at once. Vomiting should occur. If the disease is not fully resolved, repeat after two or three days.
[Xuan] Treats *Chuan Shi Gu Zhai* (Transmitted Corpse Gu Consumption) syndrome, where fathers, sons, brothers, and sisters infect each other, severely leading to extinction of the lineage. This is due to ancestral karmic debt or Fengshui influences. Although there are talismanic methods and water rituals to expel worms, if the worms leave but the person dies, it is not perfect. If one maintains proper preservation and nourishment normally, the disease will heal itself.
