[Su Wen] The Yangming channel's statement regarding "desiring to close doors and windows alone to reside" refers to the struggle between Yin and Yang. When Yang is exhausted and Yin becomes excessive, one desires to live alone with closed doors and windows. The Yellow Emperor asked: Why does Yangming disease cause aversion to people? Qibo replied: When Yangming Qi rebels, it causes panting and distress; due to this distress, there is an aversion to people. (From *Su Wen: Yangming Channel Resolution Chapter*)
Acupuncture treatment for "desiring to close doors and windows alone" has two methods:
The first involves selecting Stomach channel points. The classic states: When the Foot-Yangming Stomach channel is affected, diseases include aversion to people and fire, and desiring to close doors and windows alone to reside. Treatment should be based on observing excess or deficiency, heat or cold, and sinking or depression.
The second involves selecting Shaoyin channel points. The classic states: Deficiency of the Shaoyin channel leads to desiring to close doors and windows alone to reside. (Note: Select Dazhong [KI4] and Taixi [KI3] points.)
[Jia Yi Jing] For febrile diseases with no sweat, nasal congestion/epistaxis, dizziness, occasional collapse with edema, cold calves, inability to sleep, chills with aversion to people and wooden sounds, bi-syndrome in the throat with teeth grinding, aversion to wind, nasal obstruction with hypersomnia and susceptibility to fright, Lijui [ST45] is the primary point. For four reversals with heavy limbs, have someone hold them for a long time; for alternating cold-heat with calf pain, abdominal distension with skin pain, frequent stretching and yawning, aversion to people and wooden sounds, chills, throat pain radiating to the external kidneys, febrile disease with no sweat, lower toothache, aversion to cold with tight eyes, panting and fullness with shivering, teeth grinding and lockjaw, lethargy and loss of appetite, Neiting [ST44] is the primary point.
[Nan Jing] If a patient closes their eyes and does not wish to see people, the pulse should present as Liver channel string-taut, rapid, and long. If instead it presents as Lung channel short and choppy, it indicates death.
The mouth is governed by the Spleen and is flanked by the meridians of the Stomach and Large Intestine. The classic states: The central color yellow connects internally to the Spleen, opens into the mouth, and stores essence in the Spleen. It also states: The Spleen governs the mouth; in the zang organs it is the Spleen, and in the sensory orifices it is the mouth. Furthermore: Spleen Qi communicates with the mouth; when the Spleen is harmonious, the mouth can discern the five flavors. This describes the Spleen's governance over the mouth.
Additionally, the classic states: The Foot-Yangming Stomach meridian flanks the mouth and intersects below at Chengjiang [CV24]. It also states: The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian flanks the mouth and intersects at Renzhong [GV26]. This describes how the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians flank the mouth.
When Liver Qi is hot, Gallbladder juice leaks out, causing bitter taste in the mouth. (Full text see Wei Syndrome.)
[Nei Jing says]: There is a disease called bitter taste in the mouth, named Dan Dan (Gallbladder Heat). This is because the Liver governs planning, and the Gallbladder governs decision-making. It stores seven he of clear fluid, belonging to the pure and clear fu organ, where decisions are made by the Gallbladder. If the Gallbladder fails to decide, resentment and anger arise, causing Qi to rebel upward, leading to bile overflowing upwards, thus causing bitter taste in the mouth, or it may be caused by excessive heat. Treat with Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentian Decoction to Drain the Liver).
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (1 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (7 fen), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix, de-heart), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Cao Long Dan (Gentianae Scabrae Radix), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 5 fen), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (7 grains).
Crush the above ingredients, combine into one dose. Add two cups of water, decoct to one cup, remove dregs, and take warm after meals. Avoid spicy and hot foods. Highly effective.
True Qi rebelling upward causes bitter taste in the mouth and dry tongue. (Full text see Edema.)
[Su Wen] The Yellow Emperor asked: A person suffers from bitter taste in the mouth. What is the disease name? How is it acquired? Qibo replied: The disease is named Dan Dan (Gallbladder Heat). The Liver is the general within, depending on the Gallbladder, with the pharynx acting as its envoy. Such individuals frequently plan but cannot decide, leading to Gallbladder deficiency and Qi rebellion upward, causing bitter taste in the mouth. Treatment should utilize the Gallbladder Mu (Alarm) and Shu (Transport) points. (From *Qi Bing Lun*: Gallbladder Mu point is located 0.5 cun below Qimen [LR14] on the abdomen; Gallbladder Shu point is located bilaterally 2.5 cun lateral to the spinous process of the 11th thoracic vertebra.)
For acupuncture treatment of bitter taste in the mouth, select only Gallbladder channel points. This passage from the classic is one such method. Additionally, the classic states: Patients with Gallbladder disease often sigh deeply, have bitter taste in the mouth, and vomit bitter fluid; they should be treated by selecting Yanglingquan [GB34]. It also states: When the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder channel is affected, diseases include bitter taste in the mouth and frequent sighing. Treatment should be based on observing excess or deficiency, heat or cold, and sinking or depression.
