Yellow sweat refers to a condition where sweat stains the clothing yellow, resembling the juice of Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai).
[Zhang Zhongjing] asked: Regarding Yellow Sweat disease, characterized by bodily swelling, fever, sweating with thirst, symptoms resembling Fengshui (Wind-water edema), sweat staining clothes yellow like Phellodendri Cortex juice, and a deep pulse, how is it contracted? The Master said: It is contracted when one bathes in water while sweating; water enters through the sweat pores. It should be treated primarily with Shaoyao Guizhi Jiu Tang (Peony and Cinnamon Twig Wine Decoction).
Formula for Yellow Sweat: Baishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) [5 liang each], Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) [3 liang].
The above three ingredients are mixed with one sheng of Kujiu (bitter wine/vinegar) and seven sheng of water, boiled down to three sheng. Take one sheng warm. Initially, there may be mental restlessness; after six or seven days, the condition resolves. If mental restlessness persists, it is due to the obstruction caused by Kujiu. (Another prescription uses good wine instead of Kujiu.)
In Yellow Sweat disease, the calves are naturally cold; if they feel hot, this belongs to Lijie (Migratory Arthritis). Sweating after eating, along with frequent night sweats in the evening, indicates Laoqi (Consumptive Qi deficiency). If fever persists after sweating, the skin will eventually become rough and scaly (Jiacuo). If fever continues indefinitely, malignant sores will likely develop. If the body feels heavy but becomes lighter after sweating, over time the body will become emaciated or flaccid. Additionally, chest pain, sweating above the waist but not below, lax pain in the lower back, a sensation as if something is trapped in the skin, inability to eat in severe cases, body ache and heaviness, irritability, and difficult urination indicate Yellow Sweat, which should be treated with Guizhi Jia Huangqi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Astragali Radix). (See formula under Jaundice-Exterior section.)
A floating and surging pulse: floating indicates Wind, surging indicates Qi (Heat). When Wind and Heat struggle, strong Wind manifests as Yin Zhen (urticaria) with itching; chronic itching leads to Ji Lai (scabies/lichenification). Strong Heat leads to edema, making flexion and extension difficult. When Wind and Heat strike each other causing severe edema, sweating leads to recovery. Aversion to wind indicates deficiency, known as Fengshui; no aversion to wind, with free urination, cold in the Upper Jiao, and excessive salivation, indicates Yellow Sweat.
The Classic states: Those with yellow eyes are called Huangdan (Jaundice). However, some have yellow eyes without yellowing of the body, so a separate chapter is established.
Wind-Qi enters the Stomach via the Yangming channel, ascending to the inner canthus. In obese individuals, Wind-Qi cannot dissipate externally, leading to Rezhong (Internal Heat) and yellow eyes. (Full text see General Wind section.)
[Li Dongyuan] Qinglong San (Azure Dragon Powder) treats Wind-Qi transformation causing abdominal pain and nodules with yellow eyes, where Wind-Qi fails to vent, resulting in Internal Heat, irritability, and thirst.
Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), Weilingxian (Herba Clematidis), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Jingjie Sui (Flos Schizonepetae), Heshouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori Preparata) [2 liang each, processed as described].
Grind into powder. Take one qian mixed with boiling water after meals, three times daily.
[Classics] Treats Jaundice where yellow eyes persist. Use Guding (Gua蒂 powder) finely ground. Place a bean-sized amount in the nose, instruct the patient to inhale deeply to discharge yellow fluid from the nose, curing the condition.
Acupuncture treatment for yellow eyes has five methods:
First, select Heart meridian points. The Classic states: The Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian diseases include yellow eyes and flank pain.
Second, select Pericardium meridian points. The Classic states: The Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian disturbances cause red face and yellow eyes.
Third, select Small Intestine meridian points. The Classic states: The Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian diseases include deafness and yellow complexion.
Fourth, select Large Intestine meridian points. The Classic states: The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian diseases include yellow eyes and bitter taste.
Fifth, select Bladder meridian points. The Classic states: The Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian diseases include yellow eyes and tearing.
For all five methods, select points based on excess/deficiency, cold/heat, and sinking conditions.
