[General Verse] The Stomach governs the gums, and the Kidney governs the teeth; tonifying deficiency and clearing heat each have their specialties. If tooth decay is caused by wind transforming into worms, external treatments that reach the lesion are highly praised.
Toothache caused by worm erosion and decay results from the transformation of wind-dampness-heat. External application of Wumei Huachong San (Mume Pill for Expelling Worms) is suitable.
Wumei (Fructus Mume, three pieces) Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper, one qian) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, one qian) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, two qian) Xixin (Asarum Root, five fen) Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, one qian) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, three qian) Kufan (Alumen Calcined, five fen) Mingxiong (Realgar, one qian) Qianfen (Lead Powder, one qian)
The verse states: For toothache caused by worm erosion, use Ginger and Asarum; follow the principles of Sichuan Pepper, Coptis, Phellodendron, and Gypsum.
Add Mume and Alumen Calcined, grind them together; ensure the Lead Powder and Realgar are authentic.
(Ber An's Note: If the pain is due to wind-cold, embed Asarum Root in the tooth gap.)
Tooth swelling and pain, or accompanied by mouth and tongue pain, is caused by wind-fire in the Stomach meridian. Qingre Qufeng Tang (Heat-Clearing and Wind-Expelling Decoction) is suitable.

Use Aurantium, Achyranthes, Moutan, Saposhnikovia, and Licorice as guides; add Sophorae Tonkinensis, Forsythia, Angelica Dahurica, and Lonicera.
(Ber An's Note: Bingpeng San (Ice Borax Powder) can be applied to the swollen area, or acupuncture can be used to bleed slightly; do not allow suppuration.)
Toothache without swelling, or where swelling does not respond well to cooling medicines, is caused by deficient fire in the Kidney. Jiajian Bawei Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill) is suitable.
