Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder)
Treats stagnant fire in the Liver and Gallbladder meridians, leading to hypochondriac pain, dizziness, or epigastric pain directly behind the heart, or pulling pain in the shoulder blades, or intermittent redness and pain of the eyes extending to the Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian.
Regardless of which of the Six Meridians' Shanghan (Cold Damage) pattern it is, as long as Yang patterns are seen, this formula should be used. For women injured by depression and anger damaging the Liver, causing reckless bleeding, leukorrhea with blood or white discharge, amenorrhea, sand-like dysuria, metrorrhagia, and turbid discharge, all these symptoms are suitable for treatment with modifications of this formula. The *I Ching* states: "Wind disperses it." This formula does exactly that.
Herbs: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Dang Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhzae Radix et Rhizoma). Use Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) as guides.
Adding Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) to the above formula creates Hei Xiaoyao San (Black Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). Adding Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) and Shan Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) creates Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). Adding Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) creates Chaishao Shenling San (Bupleurum and Peony with Ginseng and Poria Powder). Adding Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mu Dan Pi, and Shan Zhi Zi creates Zhizi Qinggan San (Gardenia Clearing Liver Powder). Adding Man Jing Zi (Vittariae Spora), Chuan Xiong, Mu Dan Pi, and Shan Zhi Zi creates Danggui Chuanxiong San (Angelica and Ligusticum Powder). Adding Shu Di Huang, Chuan Xiong, Mu Dan Pi, Gou Teng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), and Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) creates Qinjiao Dihuang Tang (Gentian and Rehmannia Decoction). Adding Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Shu Di Huang, Chuan Xiong, Shan Zhi Zi, and Long Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix) creates Qingyang Rongying Tang (Clearing Liver Nourishing Nutrient Decoction).
Qiwu Yin (Seven-Ingredient Drink)
Treats Qi deficiency in the Liver meridian, where sinews lack nourishment, transforming into Cold patterns, leading to bone and sinew pain, weak legs unwilling to walk, and after excessive use of cooling medicines for Shanghan, resulting in no fire within Wood, causing traction and spasms of hands and feet.
Blood deficiency in the Liver meridian leads to Fire dryness and sinew contraction, transforming into nodules and scrofula. The *Neijing* states: "Acridity moistens it." This formula does exactly that.
Herbs: Shu Di Huang, Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Yu Rou (Corni Fructus), Mu Dan Pi, Fu Ling, Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex).
Adding Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) to the above formula creates Jiabian Qiwu Yin (Modified Seven-Ingredient Drink).
Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction)
Treats Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) meridian Shanghan patterns. Whenever there is deafness, hypochondriac pain, bitter taste in the mouth, red eyes, and malaria of the Six Meridians in summer and autumn, modify according to symptoms.
Herbs: Chai Hu, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Ren Shen, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Gan Cao. Use Sheng Jiang and Da Zao as guides.
Adding Mu Dan Pi and Shan Zhi Zi to the above formula creates Jiawei Xiao Chaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction). Removing Ban Xia and adding Shan Zhi Zi, Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Chuan Xiong, and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) creates Chaihu Qinggan San (Bupleurum Clearing Liver Powder).
Zuojin Wan (Left Metal Pill)
Treats stagnant Fire in the Liver and Gallbladder, unbearable chest and hypochondriac pain, yellowing due to alcohol dampness, swallowing acid and vomiting acid with every meal, feeling like vinegar soaking the heart, and when acid belching causes the teeth to clamp shut tightly at the anus.
Herbs: Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus).
One name for the above formula is Sijin Wan (Four Metals Pill), ground into powder, made into pills with congee, taken down with Baizhu Chenpi Tang (Atractylodes and Tangerine Peel Decoction).
Zishen Shenggan Yin (Nourish Kidney Generate Liver Drink)
Treats Liver Fire stagnating in the Stomach, leading to fatigue and desire to lie down, lack of appetite, dry mouth and throat, and in women, involuntary urination with frequent urgency. Use this for patients after Shanghan where fever has subsided but thirst remains.
Herbs: Shu Di Huang, Shan Yao, Yu Rou, Mu Dan Pi, Fu Ling, Ze Xie, Chai Hu, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Wu Wei Zi, Bai Zhu, Gan Cao.
Removing Chai Hu, Bai Zhu, and Gan Cao from the above formula and adding Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) creates Yiyin Dihuang Tang (Yin-Nourishing Rehmannia Decoction). Removing Chai Hu and Ze Xie and adding Ren Shen, Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), and Guang Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) creates Renshen Bufei Tang (Ginseng Tonifying Lung Decoction).
The above five formulas treat the five syndromes of Wood (Liver).
Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction)
Treats severe decline of Heart Fire, unable to generate Earth, leading to Earth's distress and Metal's failure, externally accompanied by cough with phlegm, alternating chills and fever, and night sweats. Urgently treat this by removing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) from this formula and adding Bai Shao. Whenever Spleen and Stomach weakness, lack of appetite, and loose stools are seen, it generally belongs to the insufficiency of Sovereign Fire; this is tonifying the root method. For any deficiency syndrome ineffective against Buzhong Yiqi Tang, administer this formula. If added with wine-fried Bai Shao and Northern Wu Wei Zi to astringe Heart Qi, the effect is even more miraculous.
Herbs: Dang Gui Shen, Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, fried and ground), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Mu Xiang, Ren Shen, Huang Qi (honey-fried), Bai Zhu (earth-fried), Gan Cao, Yuanyuan (Longan Aril, pitted). Use Sheng Jiang and Da Zao as guides.
Adding Mu Dan Pi and Shan Zhi Zi to the above formula creates Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction).
Yuanzhi Yinzi (Polygala Drink)
Treats Wind entering the Large Intestine, transmitting into Wind Dysentery, with pus and blood appearing together, characterized only by tenesmus without abdominal pain. This formula is primary. Or add Jie Geng.
Herbs: Yuan Zhi, Dang Gui, Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huang Qi, Bai Zhu, Gan Cao.
Longgu Wan (Dragon Bone Pill)
Treats Kidney Qi insufficiency, unable to ascend and communicate with Heart Fire.
Herbs: Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, calcined), Guzhi (Cannidae Os, fried and ground), Can E (Bombyx Batryticatus), Wu Wei Zi, Cong Rong (Cynomorii Herba, wine-washed to remove scales). Honey-made pills.
Dao Chi San (Directing Red Powder)
Treats hyperactive Heart Fire and stagnation in the Small Intestine, unable to flow freely. This formula treats this. For white turbidity and sand-like dysuria, combine with Xiaoyao San.
Herbs: Sheng Di Huang, Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Huang Qin (or Huang Lian, or Gan Cao).
Yangrong Tang (Nourish Nutrient Decoction)
For any major deficiency syndrome, regardless of pulse or disease, simply taking this formula will make all symptoms recede. This is the counterpart to Shiquan Dabu Tang (Perfect Ten Great Tonification Decoction). Shiquan Dabu Tang distinguishes only Qi and Blood; this formula tonifies all Five Zang organs, reaching everywhere. For severe deficiency-cold, add Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) to treat. It is particularly excellent for Three-Yin Malaria. (Another version says especially good for Yin deficiency.)
Herbs: Bai Shao, Dang Gui, Yuan Zhi, Shu Di Huang, Wu Wei Zi, Rou Gui, Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, Chen Pi, Gan Cao. Use Sheng Jiang and Da Zao as guides.
Removing Yuan Zhi, Wu Wei Zi, and Chen Pi from the above formula and adding Chuan Xiong creates Shiquan Dabu Tang.
The above five formulas treat the five syndromes of Fire (Heart).
Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction)
Treats Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency, inability to eat, leading to Phlegm-Stagnation, occasional coughing and spitting saliva. Or Stomach Qi deficiency-cold, easily causing nausea and vomiting. For deficiency malaria and post-illness dysentery, all should be regulated with this formula.
Herbs: Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Guang Chen Pi, Ban Xia, Fu Ling, Gan Cao.
Removing Ren Shen and Bai Zhu from the above formula creates Erchen Tang (Two Aged Ingredients Decoction). Removing Ban Xia and Fu Ling and adding Bai Shao creates Yihuang San (Benefit Yellow Powder). Removing Fu Ling and Bai Zhu and adding Shan Yao and Shu Di Jin creates Jinshui Liu Jun Jian (Metal-Water Six Gentlemen Decoction).
Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction)
Treats Spleen and Stomach disharmony, inability to eat, dysentery, diarrhea, fullness from deficiency.
Herbs: Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Gan Cao.
Adding Chuan Xiong and Dang Gui to the above formula creates Jiawei Sijunzi Tang (Modified Four Gentlemen Decoction). Adding Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Huang Qi, Chai Hu, and Mu Dan Pi creates Yipi Qinggan San (Benefit Spleen Clear Liver Powder).
Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction)
Treats deficiency-cold stomach pain, incessant vomiting, diarrhea with undigested food. This is medicine for the Taiyin and Yangming meridians.
Herbs: Ren Shen, Bai Zhu (fried), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Gan Cao.
Adding Fu Zi to the above formula creates Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Regulate the Middle Decoction).
Jianzhong Tang (Establish the Middle Decoction)
Treats Liver deficiency unable to generate Fire, leading to Fire unable to generate Earth. Using the sourness of Bai Shao and the sweetness of Gan Cao, this represents Jia-Ji transforming into Earth. Add Rou Gui to tonify the child of Liver and benefit the mother of Earth, cultivating the source of generation. For Spleen and Stomach disharmony, inability to eat, with external symptoms of cold pain in both hypochondria, dysentery with lower abdominal pain, use this to treat.
Herbs: Bai Shao, Rou Gui, Gan Cao. (Note: This formula should add Yi Tang (Maltose) to align with Zhang Zhongjing's intent.)
Adding Huang Qi to the above formula creates Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Establish the Middle Decoction).
Xianglian Wan (Costus and Coptis Pill)
Treats Damp-Fire in the Spleen and Stomach meridians, transmitting to the Large Intestine, causing endless diarrhea and tenesmus.
Herbs: Huang Lian, Mu Xiang (should not be exposed to fire). Water-made pills.
Wancun commented on *Yiguan*: Recent Xianglian Wan is absolutely not the old method, mixing in drugs that dissipate, attack, and purge. Everyone acts independently, yet still names it Xianglian, killing people like grass. Truly hateful.
The above five formulas treat the five syndromes of Earth (Spleen).
Xiebai San (Drain White Powder)
For any lung-heat cough, it should be modified and used. Add Jie Geng and Bai He (Lilii Bulbus) for cough; add Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus) for phlegm; add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) for thirst; add Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) for food retention.
Herbs: Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex, honey-fried), Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Gan Cao.
Adding Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chen Pi, Wu Wei Zi, Zhi Mu, and Tian Dong (Asparagi Tuber) to the above formula creates Ren Shen Pingfei San (Ginseng Calming Lung Powder).
Shengmai San (Generate Pulse Powder)
Treats Summerheat injuring Original Qi, excessive sweating, fatigue, and desire to lie down. If there is deficient heat and thirst with no appetite, mild cases combine with Sijunzi Tang, severe cases combine with Buzhong Yiqi Tang.
Herbs: Ren Shen, Mai Dong, Wu Wei Zi.
If there is no Ren Shen in the above formula, replace with Gou Qi (Lycii Fructus).
Shengjin Zishui Yin (Generate Metal Nourish Water Drink)
After Shanghan fever subsides, there is Yin easy to tonify and Yang difficult to move; all should be nourished with this. Symptoms include restlessness remaining after sweating, thirst, slight fever, hard stool, and short dark urine. There is also a type of Shaoyang-Yangming pattern with swollen and painful hands and feet, caused by Fire dryness generating Wind, Wind invading extremities. Do not wait for sweating; immediately use this formula, adding Chai Hu and Huang Qin, with no ineffectiveness.
Herbs: Sheng Di Huang, Mu Dan Pi, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Ren Shen, Mai Dong, Bai Zhu (raw), Gan Cao. Use Da Zao and Sheng Jiang as guides.
Removing Mu Dan Pi and Mai Dong from the above formula and adding Chuan Xiong and Fu Ling creates Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction).
Huangqi Tang (Astragalus Decoction)
Treats severe Lung Qi deficiency, insecure pores, arrival of Cold patterns. Or dull pain in the lower abdomen, loose stools, frequent and endless urination, insomnia all night, incessant night sweats, decline of Mingmen Fire, seminal emission during dreams. This formula treats all these. Night sweats and spontaneous sweating are particularly critical.
Herbs: Huang Qi (honey-fried), Bai Zhu, Dang Gui, Yuan Zhi (honey-fried), Zao Ren (fried and ground), Guzhi, Sheng Jiang and Da Zao as guides.
Removing Huang Qi and Guzhi from the above formula and adding Ren Shen, Shu Di Huang, and Gan Cao creates Qifu Yin (Seven Blessings Drink).
Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Benefit Qi Decoction)
For internal injury and external contraction of the Six Meridians, as well as summer heat and fatigue fever, or incessant sweating, use this base formula. Add 1 qian of Bai Shao; if dysentery abdominal pain is resolved but diarrhea persists, this is Spleen Qi sinking. Add 3 qian of wine-fried Bai Shao. For long-standing malaria with emaciation, regardless of the Six Meridians, add 1 qian of Ban Xia. (Contains the intent of Liujunzi Tang.) Even with external contraction, add no more than 1 qian of Huang Qin. (Then it combines with Xiao Chaihu Tang.) For women before pregnancy with Qi deficiency causing fetal movement insecurity, miscarriage, or metrorrhagia, or postpartum blood deficiency fever, add 2 qian of wine-fried Bai Shao. This formula is suitable for any middle-jiao deficiency damage and post-illness maladjustment. Ni said: Internal injury from Seven Emotions first damages the Spleen and Stomach; treatment first tonifies Earth; this formula is it.
Herbs: Ren Shen, Huang Qi (honey-fried), Bai Zhu (earth-fried), Dang Gui, Chen Pi, Chai Hu, Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gan Cao. Use Sheng Jiang and Da Zao as guides. (Note: In this formula, Ren Shen and Huang Qi should be Sovereign, Dang Gui and Bai Zhu Ministers, Chen Pi and Gan Cao Assistants, Sheng Ma and Chai Hu Envoys. The dosage of Sovereign and Minister uses qian, while Assistants and Envoys use fen, to align with Li Dongyuan's formula intent. This is an ascending agent for the Upper and Middle Jiao.)
Adding Bai Shao and Wu Wei Zi to the above formula creates Tiaozhong Yiqi Tang (Regulate Middle Benefit Qi Decoction). Removing Dang Gui, Bai Zhu, and Chen Pi and adding Bai Shao and Wu Wei Zi creates Renshen Yiqi Tang (Ginseng Benefit Qi Decoction). Removing Chai Hu and adding Fu Ling and Wu Wei Zi creates Shenqi Tupi Tang (Ginseng and Qi Tonify Spleen Decoction).
The above five formulas treat the five syndromes of Metal (Lung).
Liuyin Yin (Six-Ingredient Drink)
Treats Kidney Water insufficiency, rising Deficient Fire, consuming True Yin, transforming into tidal fever, cough, Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting), Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption), etc. The *I Ching* states: "Rain moistens it." This formula does exactly that.
Herbs: Shu Di Huang, Shan Yao, Yu Rou, Mu Dan Pi, Fu Ling, Ze Xie.
Adding Wu Wei Zi to the above formula creates Duqi Yin (Duqi Drink). Adding Wu Wei Zi, Sheng Di Huang, and Chai Hu creates Yinyin Dihuang Wan (Suppress Yin Rehmannia Pill). Adding Wu Wei Zi, Sheng Di Huang, Chai Hu, and Dang Gui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Tail), removing Yu Rou, creates Ziyin Shenqi Wan (Nourish Yin Kidney Qi Pill). Removing Fu Ling and Ze Xie and adding Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Chuan Lian Zi (Toosendan Fructus), Shi Jun Zi (Quisqualis Fructus), and Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria) creates Jiwei Dihuang Wan (Nine-Flavor Rehmannia Pill).
Shugan Yishen Tang (Soothe Liver Benefit Kidney Decoction)
For epigastric pain and dry, hard stools, it is Liver Blood deficiency. This formula is primary. Where Xiaoyao San fails, this formula is wonderful.
Herbs: Chai Hu, Bai Shao, Shu Di Huang, Shan Yao, Yu Rou, Mu Dan Pi, Fu Ling, Ze Xie.
Adding Dang Gui Shen, Zao Ren, and Shan Zhi Zi to the above formula creates Zishen Qinggan Yin (Nourish Kidney Clear Liver Drink).
Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill)
Treats decline of Fire in Mingmen and Sanjiao, exhaustion of Yuan Yang, transforming into diarrhea, abdominal distension, impotence, cold semen and infertility, soreness and pain in both knees, soft and weak waist, blurred vision. Treat all with this formula. The *I Ching* states: "The sun warms it." This formula does exactly that.
Herbs: Fu Zi, Rou Gui, Shu Di Huang, Shan Yao, Yu Rou, Mu Dan Pi, Fu Ling, Ze Xie. (Note: Adding Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) and Cheqian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) to the formula creates Jisheng Shenqi Wan (Living Generation Kidney Qi Pill), most suitable for Kidney Cold and Liver Heat.)
Adding Wu Wei Zi and Lu Rong (Cervi Cornu Degelatinatum) to the above formula creates Shibai Wan (Ten Supplements Pill). Removing Shan Yao, Yu Rou, Mu Dan Pi, and Fu Ling and adding Niuxi and Gan Cao creates Zhenyin Jian (Settle Yin Decoction).
Yougui Yin (Right Return Drink)
For Mingmen deficiency-cold and other patterns where Bawei Wan fails, take this formula. Symptoms are detailed under Bawei Wan.
Herbs: Fu Zi, Rou Gui, Shu Di Huang, Gou Qi, Shan Yao, Yu Rou, Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Gan Cao.
Removing Gan Cao and adding Dang Gui, Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla), and Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen) from the above formula creates Yougui Wan (Right Return Pill).
Zuogui Yin (Left Return Drink)
Treats dryness of Kidney Water, rising Deficient Fire steaming Spleen and Stomach,亏损 of Yin Earth, leading to inability to eat, dry and hard stools, even obstruction of the Three Yang meridians, transforming into Ye Ge (Dysphagia). Treated early, all heal. Once treated Shanghan with black tongue and scorched lips, extreme thirst desiring drink, by adding Dang Gui and Bai Shao to this formula; this was certainly due to excessive use of attacking and cold-cooling drugs. This formula saves them. For malaria combined with dryness patterns, where heat is heavy and chills are light, this formula is even more wonderful.
Herbs: Shu Di Huang, Gou Qi, Shan Yao, Yu Rou, Fu Ling, Gan Cao.
Removing Fu Ling and Gan Cao and adding Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Ejiao, Tusizi, and Niuxi from the above formula creates Zuogui Wan (Left Return Pill).
The above five formulas treat the five syndromes of Water (Kidney).
