九味羌活汤主之。(不解。即当用清解药。兼阳明以治。一二日属太阳症。乃仲景示以规矩准绳
耳。不可板定日数。若照此脉症见端。即过旬日。仍太阳症也。不必拘泥犹疑。)

Below the Taiyang stage belongs to the orthodox treatment method. The treatment method of nourishing Yin belongs to the compliant treatment method.
Within one or two days from the onset, whenever headache, aversion to cold, stiffness and pain in the neck and spine, spasm and tightness of the four limbs, high fever, and a floating and tight pulse are encountered, this is the Taiyang exterior syndrome (Taiyang exterior syndrome).
Jiuwei Qianghuo Decoction (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction) should be used as the primary prescription. (If the condition does not resolve, Qingjie medicines [clearing and resolving agents] should be employed, treating the Yangming channel concurrently. One or two days belong to the Taiyang syndrome; this is merely Zhang Zhongjing demonstrating the rules and standards. One must not rigidly fixate on the number of days. If observing these pulse and symptom manifestations, even after ten days or more, it remains a Taiyang syndrome; there is no need to hesitate due to rigid adherence.)
Jiuwei Qianghuo Decoction (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction)
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) [Monarch drug] Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) [Minister drug] Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) [Envoy drug] Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) [Monarch drug] Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) [Minister drug] Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) [Assistant drug]
Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) [Monarch drug] Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) [Assistant drug] Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [Minister drug] Decoct with fresh ginger and scallion water. Recovery occurs when sweat covers the whole body.
Removing Xixin and Cangzhu from the above formula and adding Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) yields Jiajian Chonghe Tang (Modified Harmonizing Decoction). It treats wind-strike with spontaneous sweating, aversion to wind, and a slow pulse.
For those with excessive fire, Da Baizhu Tang (Great Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) should be used. (Alternatively, Liangge San (Cooling the Chest Powder) without Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), combined with Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), plus Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), can be used. For cases involving deficiency, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Huangqi may be added.)
For febrile diseases occurring during hot weather, Guizhi Shigao Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Gypsum Decoction) should be used. (When the weather is hot and the disease presents with fever, the blood and fluids of the entire body are scorched, and Yin fluids are prone to drying up. One must not use acrid-dry drugs to rob the fluids.) Shigao Tang (Gypsum Decoction) should be used. Zhizi Shengma Tang (Gardenia and Cimicifuga Decoction) should be used. (The character "yi" [also] should be added after "Shengma Tang".)
*Shanghan Xinfa* (Heart Method of Cold Damage) states: In the current world, Taiyang syndromes are rare. This is because the Stomach is the destination for all pathogens, and heat pathogens easily force their way in. Thus, there are cold damage cases that do not transmit to Shaoyang and the Three Yin channels.
There is certainly no cold damage that does not involve the Yangming channel. Therefore, within two or three days, regardless of whether sweating is incomplete (such as sweat only appearing on the head and face, or above the waist), or if sweating was ineffective, or if no sweating was induced, as long as dry mouth and vexation are seen, even if there are Taiyang exterior signs, it indicates the pathogen is gradually entering the Fu organs. At this time, dispersing drugs must be strictly avoided; only clearing and resolving methods are suitable to preserve Jin Ye (body fluids). Once Yin fluids are replenished, sweat will naturally surge out from the muscle surface, resolving the disease. This is what is meant by: once the Metal command (cooling autumn energy) operates, severe heat dissipates instantly. For severe cases, add Huangqin, Lianqiao (Scutellariae Radix), Chaihu, and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) to Baihu Tang. For vomiting, add Jiangzhi Houpo (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex).
Da Baizhu Tang (Great Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction)
Harmonizes cold damage of the four seasons, indiscriminately resolves Six Channel cold damage, avoiding contraindications. (How could there be a single formula to indiscriminately resolve cold damage of the four seasons and six channels? With such statements emerging, the disaster of indiscriminate dispersion begins anew, and the malpractice of overusing cold-cool drugs opens here. This is open to criticism.)
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) [Monarch drug] Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [Monarch drug] Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) [Minister drug] Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) [Minister drug] Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) [Assistant drug] Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) [Assistant drug]
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) [Assistant drug] Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) [Minister drug] Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) [Minister drug] Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) [Envoy drug] Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [Envoy drug]
Grind into powder. Take half liang each time, decoct with water, take warm. If unresolved, prepare again.
In spring, double the dosage of Qianghuo. In summer, double Huangqin and Zhimu. In late summer with heavy rain, double Baizhi and Baizhu. In autumn, add five qian of Guizhi. In winter, add eight qian or one liang of Guizhi.
Guizhi Shigao Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Gypsum Decoction)
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) [Monarch drug] Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) [Assistant drug] Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) [Assistant drug] Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) [Envoy drug] Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) [Monarch drug] Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) [Minister drug]
Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) [Guide drug] Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [Monarch drug] Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [Minister drug]
This formula replaces Guizhi Tang after the Summer Solstice. If Banmahuang (Ephedrae Herba) half liang is added, it can replace Mahuang Daqinglong Tang (Ephedra Major Blue Dragon Decoction).
Take five qian each time. Stop subsequent doses after sweating occurs.
Shigao Tang (Gypsum Decoction)
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [Monarch drug] Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) [Minister drug] Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) [Minister drug] Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) [Assistant drug] Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) [Envoy drug] Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [Assistant drug]
Cut into pieces. Take five qian each time, with one cup and a half of water, and one he of Chidou (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), decoct to eight parts, take warm. If after three to five doses (the phrase "bing wei jie" [disease unresolved] should be added), add one liang of Zhimu. If still unresolved, add one liang of Dahuang.
Zhizi Shengma Tang (Gardenia and Cimicifuga Decoction)
Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) [Monarch drug] Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) [Minister drug] Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) [Envoy drug] Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) [Minister drug] Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [Assistant drug]
Take five qian each time, decoct with water, take in one dose. If unresolved, prepare again.
Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction)
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [Monarch drug] Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) [Minister drug] Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) [Envoy drug] Jingmi (Oryza Sativa Germen) [Assistant drug] Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [Assistant drug]
