[Nu Rou Pan Jing Ge - Song on Pterygium]
Pterygium (Nour flesh climbing the eye) originates at the inner canthus (Da Zi). Initially, it gradually invades the cornea (Feng Lun), and over time, it covers the pupil. Symptoms include itching or pain, with gradual thickening; if accompanied by redness, swelling, and ulceration persisting for years, it is often due to lung heat congestion.
In the early stage, applying Zijin Ointment (Purple Gold Ointment) is effective. For chronic cases, surgical cutting, cauterization, or moxibustion/ironing therapy is recommended. Internally, Chufeng Decoction (Wind-Expelling Decoction) should be taken, containing Chongweizi (Chenopodium Seed), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Xixin (Asarum Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root).
Formula: Chufeng Decoction
Chongweizi (Chenopodium Seed) 1 qian, Jiegeng (Platocodon Root) 1 qian, Xixin (Asarum Root) 5 fen, Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) 1 qian, Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) 5 fen, Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) 1 qian, Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) 1 qian.
Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Zijin Ointment formula is found at the end of this volume.
[Note] [1] Pterygium originates at the inner canthus. Initially, it gradually infiltrates the cornea, and over time, it covers the pupil. It may cause itching or pain and gradually thicken.
[2] This condition is mostly caused by chronic blepharitis (redness and ulceration) or excessive wind-heat in the Lung meridian.
[3] In the early stage, Zijin Ointment can be applied to resolve the pterygium and stasis. If chronic, it becomes tough and difficult to dissolve, requiring cutting, ironing, and cauterization, followed by taking Chufeng Decoction.
[Chen Yi Ge - Song on Deep Opacity]
Deep opacity (Chen Yi) appears as a white haze hidden within the cornea. It is caused by liver fatigue and brain heat attacking downward towards the pupil. The opacity is only visible when looking carefully towards the sunlight. The pain is characterized as mild during the day and severe at night, affecting the cornea.
Treatment involves Lingyangjiao Yin (Antelope Horn Drink) containing Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed), Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Heishen (Black Ginseng), and Chongweizi (Chenopodium Seed); or Zaojiao Wan (Gleditsia Pill) containing Shetui (Snake Skin), Chantui (Cicada Slough), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Longdancao (Gentiana Root), Yuanshi (Magnetite), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Baijuhua (White Chrysanthemum Flower), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Fuling (Poria), Muzei (Equisetum), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root), Zhu Zhaopi (Pig Claw Skin), Chuanshanjia (Pangolin Scales), and Gujingcao (Centipedia Herb).
Formula: Chenyi Lingyang Yin (Deep Opacity Antelope Horn Drink)
Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed) 1 qian, Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn) 2 qian, Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) 1 qian, Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) 2 qian, Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) 1 qian, Heishen (Black Ginseng) 1 qian, Chongweizi (Chenopodium Seed) 2 qian.
Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Formula: Zaojiao Wan (Gleditsia Pill)
Shetui (Snake Skin) 7 strips, Chantui (Cicada Slough), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Longdancao (Gentiana Root), Yuanshi (Magnetite), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Baijuhua (White Chrysanthemum Flower) each 1.5 liang, Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) 0.5 liang, Renshen (Ginseng Root) 1 liang, Fuling (Poria) 1.5 liang, Muzei (Equisetum) 1.5 liang, Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit) 1.5 liang, Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root) 1.5 liang, Zhu Zhaopi (Pig Claw Skin), Chuanshanjia (Pangolin Scales), Gujingcao (Centipedia Herb) each 1.5 liang.
Grind all herbs into fine powder. Take half of the powder and add twelve stalks of Ya Zao (Gleditsia Sinensis fruit pod) that have been burned to retain their properties. Mix evenly and form pills with refined honey, sized like wisteria seeds. Take 1.5 qian per dose, administered on an empty stomach with Apricot Kernel Decoction. Take the other half of the powder and add 1 liang of Xianlingpi (Epimedium Herba). Take 3 qian per dose. Slice three pieces of pig liver, sandwich the medicine between them, cook thoroughly, chew finely before bedtime, and swallow with the original cooking liquid.
[Note] [1] Deep cataract (Chen Yi Nei Zhang): The white opacity is hidden within the cornea. It is only visible when looking carefully towards the sunlight. The pain is characterized as mild during the day and severe at night.
[2] The etiology is liver meridian fatigue-heat and heat qi from the brain flowing downward. It is suitable to treat with Lingyangjiao Yin (Antelope Horn Drink) and Zaojiao Wan (Gleditsia Pill).
