[Liver Deficiency with Accumulated Heat Song]
Article: Liver deficiency leads to accumulated heat, causing the condition to flare up intermittently. Initially, there is redness and swelling of the eyes with pain and photophobia (sensitivity to light). Over time, nebulae (corneal opacities) form, leading to gradual dimness of vision. The treatment should utilize Qingxiang Wan (Blue Box Pill), which contains Cistanche Seed (Cuscutae Semen), Leonurus Fruit (Leonuri Fructus),
Rehmannia Root (Rehmanniae Radix), Blue Eyebright Seed (Buddlejae Flos/Seed - note: Qingxiang usually refers to Buddlejae Flos or similar, here kept as Qingxiangzi), Wind-Expelling Herb (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Schisandra Berry (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Black Ginseng (Scrophulariae Radix), Bupleurum Root (Bupleuri Radix), Alisma Rhizome (Alismatis Rhizoma), Asarum Root (Asari Radix), Plantago Seed (Plantaginis Semen), and Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix).
Formula: Qingxiang Wan Formula
Cistanche Seed (Cuscutae Semen) 1 liang, Leonurus Fruit (Leonuri Fructus) 1 liang, Rehmannia Root (Rehmanniae Radix) 2 liang, Blue Eyebright Seed (Qingxiangzi) 2 liang, Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) 1 liang, Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi) 3 qian,
Scrophulariae Radix (Heishen) 1 liang, Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) 1 liang, Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie) 1 liang, Asari Radix (Xixin) 3 qian, Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) 1 liang, Poria (Fuling) 1 liang.
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills, sized like tung tree seeds. Take 3 qian on an empty stomach, washed down with tea infusion.
Annotation [1]: The syndrome of liver deficiency with accumulated heat manifests with intermittent flares. Initially, the eyes are red, swollen, painful, with a gritty sensation, tearing, and difficulty opening. If prolonged, the condition worsens, leading to the formation of nebulae and blurred vision. It is appropriate to treat this with Qingxiang Zi Wan.

Article: Red membranes droop over the pupil. The red membrane descends from the Qi Wheel (white part of the eye) to cover the Feng Wheel (black part of the eye). This condition belongs to heat rushing to the eyes due to liver and lung heat. There is tearing, increased pain, and the eyes appear bright red like cinnabar.
Treatment involves using Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Scrophularia Root (Heishen), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), and Leonurus Fruit (Chongwei).
Formula: Lingyang Yin (Antelope Decoction)
Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao, sliced) 1.5 qian, Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Scrophularia Root (Heishen), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi, stir-fried) each 1 qian, Leonurus Fruit (Chongwei) 2 qian.
Grind the above herbs into a coarse powder. Add two zhan of water, decoct until one zhan remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Annotation [1]: In the case of drooping red membranes, at the onset, a patch of red membrane appears on the upper part of the Qi Wheel, drooping down to the Feng Wheel, covering the pupil below.
[2]: The cause is heat from the liver and lungs rushing into the eyes, resulting in the generation of red membranes, accompanied by tearing, pain, and itching. It is suitable to take Lingyang Yin.

Article: Redness at the canthus (eye corner) is attributed to fire in the Heart Meridian. Redness at the inner canthus (large canthus) is mostly excess syndrome, while redness at the outer canthus (small canthus) is mostly deficiency syndrome. For excess syndrome, use Xixin San (Heart-Washing Powder), containing Angelica Root (Danggui), Peony Root (Shaoyao), Ephedra Stem (Mahuang), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie), Rhubarb Root (Dahuang), and Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi);
For deficiency syndrome, use Jiuxian San (Nine Immortals Powder), containing Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie), Peony Root (Shaoyao), Chrysanthemum Flower (Juhua), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Angelica Root (Danggui), Licorice Root (Gancao), Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi), and Akebia Stem (Mutong) are suitable.

Annotation [1]: In the syndrome of red canthi, if the red vessels originate from the inner canthus, it is excess fire of the Heart Meridian; if they originate from the outer canthus, it is deficient heat of the Heart Meridian.
[2]: For excess cases, use Xixin San to resolve the excess pathogenic factors; for deficiency cases, Jiuxian San is suitable to clear and descend the deficient heat.
