22. The five movements (Wuyun), heavenly timing, and earthly transformation are interconnected; pathogenic and righteous qi both penetrate the five zang organs of the human body. When the five zang organs are invaded by pathogenic factors, five types of diseases arise, which can encompass the manifestations of all diseases. Heat corresponds to Ministerial Fire (Junhuo), and Summer-heat corresponds to Ministerial Fire (Xianghuo), because the Earthly Branches correspond to the twelve meridians. Although divided into two types of fire, their underlying principle is the same, differing only in degrees of mildness or severity.
[Annotation] The transformations of the Five Movements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—cannot exist apart from the Six Qi: Wind, Heat, Summer-heat, Dampness, Dryness, and Cold. Conversely, the transformations of the Six Qi cannot exist apart from the Five Elements. Thus, although there are five movements and six qi, the seasonal commands of Heaven and the transformative processes of Earth are identical. Both pathogenic-transforming qi and righteous-transforming qi permeate the five zang organs. Righteous qi nourishes the body, while pathogenic qi causes disease. When the five zang organs receive pathogenic qi, diseases of the five zang organs occur. The "five diseases" can encompass the conditions of myriad diseases, referring to fixed diseases determined by primary and guest qi, mixed diseases where primary and guest qi intermingle, and diseases arising from overcoming, counteracting, and stagnation. None can escape the variations of these five diseases, just as all things generated by Heaven and Earth fall under the category of the Five Elements. Among the Five Elements, only Fire has two aspects: on Earth it is Fire, and in Heaven it is Heat and Summer-heat. Heat combines with Shaoyin to form Ministerial Fire (Junhuo), and Summer-heat combines with Shaoyang to form Ministerial Fire (Xianghuo). This is because the Yin-Yang Twelve Earthly Branches correspond to the Yin-Yang Twelve Meridians of the human body. Although Fire is divided into two, its principle is one. Therefore, its virtue, administration, command, transformation, disaster, and disease are the same; however, there are indeed differences in condition, such as mild heat causing light illness and severe summer-heat causing heavy illness.
23. In the Five Planets, Sui Xing (Jupiter) belongs to Wood, Ying Huo Xing (Mars) to Fire, Chen Xing (Mercury) to Water, Zhen Xing (Saturn) to Earth, and Tai Bai Xing (Venus) to Metal. Insufficiency reduces normal intensity by one or two parts, presenting a uniform color of the element that overcomes it; Excess causes deviation northward exceeding normal intensity by one or two times, with the feared planet losing its true color and accompanied by clouds of the mother element's color. The prosperity, decline, slowness, and speed of stars indicate compliance or rebellion, while the duration and frequency of stationing distinguish auspiciousness from inauspiciousness.
[Annotation] Among the omens displayed by Heaven, none appear prior to the Five Planets. The Five Planets refer to the planets corresponding to Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Wood is called Sui Xing (Jupiter), located in the East. Fire is called Ying Huo Xing (Mars), located in the South. Water is called Chen Xing (Mercury), located in the North. Earth is called Zhen Xing (Saturn), located in the Southwest. Metal is called Tai Bai Xing (Venus), located in the West. The ruling star of the year, neither too large nor too small, neither bright nor dim, neither fast nor slow, moving along its proper path and staying within its proper degree, represents the normal state. If it is an Yin year, it is termed Insufficiency (Bu Ji); the star's brightness decreases by one part from normal, and if severely insufficient, by two parts, with its light contracting. The ruling star's color will mix with the color of the element that overcomes it. For example, if Wood is insufficient, Sui Xing appears green mixed with white; if Fire is insufficient, Ying Huo Xing appears red mixed with black; if Earth is insufficient, Zhen Xing appears yellow mixed with green; if Metal is insufficient, Tai Bai Xing appears white mixed with red; if Water is insufficient, Chen Xing appears black mixed with yellow. If it is a Yang year, it is termed Excess (Tai Guo); the ruling star deviates northward, meaning it crosses its degree towards the North. The North is the position of Zi Wei, the palace of Tai Yi. Thus, it exceeds normal intensity by one part, and if severely excessive, by two parts, with its light overflowing. The ruling star's color remains pure, while the star that fears it loses its true color and mixes with the color of the Mother element that generates it. For instance, if Wood is excessive, the star fearing Wood is Earth (Zhen Xing), which loses its true yellow color and mixes with the red color of Fire that generates Earth. Because Wood is prosperous and Earth fears it, Earth must steal Qi from its Mother (Fire) for support, hence appearing with the Mother's color. Earth mixing with red indicates Earth generating its child; other stars follow this logic. Whenever a star is in its proper season, it should be prosperous; when out of season, it should be declining. A star moving slower than the heavens is compliant, indicating light disaster or disease; a star moving faster than the heavens is rebellious, indicating heavy disaster or disease. If a star stalls and does not advance, staying at a degree for many days, the disaster or disease is heavy; if it stalls but stays for few days, the disaster or disease is light. Thus, auspiciousness and inauspiciousness are distinguished.
