Section Title: Upper Compilation - External Treatment Methods
Classification: Head and Face Region
Attributes: [1] The Xuantai bone, also known as the Yuzhu bone, refers to the three segments of the cervical vertebrae at the back of the head, alternatively called the Tianzhu bone.
[2] Injuries to this bone are categorized into four syndromes:
<1> One type results from falling from a height, causing the cervical bone to be inserted inward while retaining some lateral mobility; treat using the neck-lifting method.
<2> One type results from blunt trauma, where the head cannot be lifted; treat using the alignment method.
<3> One type results from a fall injury, with tilting to the left or right; treat using the straightening method.
<4> One type results from a fall injury, where the face is upward and the head cannot droop, or where tendons are elongated with misaligned bones, or where tendons are gathered, or where stiff tendons cause the bone to follow the head in a drooping position; treat using the pushing, aligning, connecting, and straightening methods.
[3] For all treatments, during clinical examination:
<1> Inquire whether the injury resulted from falling off a cart or horse, falling from a high place causing fractures, or severe beating and falling.
<2> Further inquire about appetite: whether the patient desires food or drinks, or has no desire for food; whether the limbs are uninjured but spirit remains unchanged, or if spirit is diminished.
<3> Observe whether the patient can sit up and walk, or is in a coma sleeping without speaking; whether pain persists, blood stasis gathers and coagulates, swelling becomes hard, and tendons are distended.
<4> All cases should internally administer Zhenggu Zijin Dan (Bone-Setting Purple Gold Pill), externally apply Wanling Gao (Ten Thousand Spirits Plaster), wash with Haitongpi Tang (Phellodendron Decoction), and moxibustion/warm compress with Dingtong San (Pain-Relieving Powder). Externally, apply manual therapy techniques, detailed in the first volume.

Section Title: Upper Compilation - External Treatment Methods
Classification: Explanation of Instruments
Attributes: Use a board of Chinese fir wood, three cun wide, two cun thick, extending from the waist upwards past the shoulder by approximately one cun. The outer surface should be flat, while the inner surface facing the back is carved concavely to fit snugly against the muscles along the spinal column, divided into five sections (fen, pronounced with departing tone).
[1] Drill two oblique holes on the left side of the first section and two on the right side. From the second section through the third, fourth, and fifth sections, drill one oblique hole on each side. Thread a wide belt through the upper left hole of the first section, pass it over the right shoulder, down across the chest, diagonally under the left armpit, around the back, and insert it into the secondary right hole of the first section. Then, thread another belt through the upper right hole of the first section, pass it over the left shoulder, down across the chest, diagonally under the right armpit, around the back, and insert it into the secondary left hole of the first section. Fold both ends tightly and secure them onto the wood.
[2] Pass belts through the holes of the third and fourth sections, wrapping horizontally across the front of the abdomen below the soft ribs, then threading them back into their original holes and tightening securely on the wood.
[3] Pass a belt through the hole of the fifth section, wrap it horizontally across the front abdomen, then thread it back and tighten securely on the wood. Ensure there is no slippage or movement, as this ensures benefit to the injured area.
[4] When using this wooden board, first pad it against the body with cotton wadding and soft cloth to prevent pain.
[5] Explanation of Usage:
<1> For any falls or blows to the back resulting in cracking and protrusion of the spinal muscles/bones, the patient will inevitably suffer from kyphosis and difficulty looking up. The method requires the patient to lie prone. Have an assistant stand on the patient's shoulders with both feet. The physician observes the cracked and protruding area, applying appropriate pressure—light or heavy, pressing or kneading—to realign it. Then, use the wooden board according to the previous method to compress it, employing alignment or grasping techniques.
