Treats lung qi stagnation transforming into heat, characterized by cough and wheezing, facial edema, and body fever. Use Sangbaipi (Morus Cortex), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), and Gancao (Licorice Root), decocted in water for oral administration.
[Collected Annotations] Ji Chuzhong stated: The Classics state: "The Lung dislikes upward reversal of qi." Upward reversal leads to stagnation and heat in the Upper Jiao; qi stagnation generates phlegm-fluids, and fire stagnation generates heat. Consequently, the Lung's regulation and descending function fail, leading to severe congestion manifesting as wheezing, chest fullness, swelling, and coughing. White is the color of the Lung; "Xie Bai" (Draining White) refers to draining the excess of Lung qi. The sovereign herb is Sangbaipi (Morus Cortex), which is moist in texture and pungent in flavor; its moisture moistens dryness, and its pungency drains the Lung. The minister herb is Digupi (Lycii Cortex), which is light in texture and cold in nature; its lightness removes excess, and its coldness overcomes heat. Raw Gancao (Licorice Root) drains fire, assisting Sangbaipi and Digupi to drain various Lung excesses, thereby allowing clear qi to descend and wheezing and coughing to subside. This is far superior to using bitter-cold herbs like Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) or Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) that damage the Stomach. When fire-heat injures qi, there are three treatments for rescuing the Lung: if excess heat injures the Lung, use Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) to treat the branch/symptom; if deficient fire attacks Metal (Lung), use Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) to control the root/cause; if healthy qi is not injured but stagnant fire is severe, then Xiebai San (Drain the White Powder) clears the Lung and regulates the Middle Jiao, treating both root and branch, thereby supplementing the deficiencies of the aforementioned two formulas.
Treats Lung deficiency with fire, cough without fluid secretion, and cough accompanied by choking sensation or air reflux. Use Zhen Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) 1 liang, Chao Niubangzi (Stir-fried Arctii Fructus) 2 qian 5 fen, Chao Madouling (Stir-fried Aristolochiae Fructus) 5 qian, Xingren (Apricot Seed) 7 qian, Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) 5 qian, Nuomi (Glutinous Rice) 1 he. Take approximately 2 xu per dose, decocted in water for oral administration.
[Collected Annotations] Cheng Yingmao stated: Phlegm containing red threads, coughing up blood spots, gradually developing into flaccidity syndrome over time. This occurs because the Lung resides at the highest position among the Zang organs, with fine pores distributed between the lobes. Qi enters and exits through these pores, respiration transforms into fluids, and these fluids irrigate the whole body, known as "Water originating from the High Source." Once subjected to flaming heat, inhalation merely draws fire upward, while exhalation produces no fluid. Over time, all Lung pores close, the throat becomes itchy or develops sores, and the six lobes of the Lung become increasingly scorched and withered. Now, Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) is used as the sovereign herb to dissolve obstructions in the pores; Xingren (Apricot Seed) and Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus) are used to unblock the pore pathways; Madou Ling (Aristolochiae Fructus) is used to clear heat from the pores; Nuomi (Glutinous Rice) is used to tonify the Spleen (Earth, the Mother of Metal); when Spleen qi arrives, the Lung naturally becomes light, clear, and unobstructed.
