[Prescription Verse] Tan Zhu (Phlegm Nodule) presents as a hair-like pouch shape; upon palpation, it feels woody and hard with slight pain. The area is neither red nor hot. It is formed by damp-phlegm and the stagnation of the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensiveness, Sorrow, Fear, Fright).
[Annotation] This condition occurs on the back. Its shape is long like a pouch or short like a winter melon. Upon palpation, it feels woody and hard, with slight pain. There is no heat or redness, and the skin color remains normal. It arises from damp-phlegm and the stagnation of the Seven Emotions condensing and knotting within the muscle layers, accumulating over time to form. In the early stage, it is appropriate to take Chuang Ke Liu Qi Yin (Traumatology Flowing Qi Decoction) internally and apply Jin Feng Hua Tan Gao (Golden Phoenix Phlegm-Resolving Plaster) externally to dissipate it. If the disease has persisted for a long time and is stubborn, failing to resolve with treatment, it will eventually suppurate at the appointed time. The treatment methods follow those specified in the section on Ulcerative Sores and Carbuncles.
Formula: Chuang Ke Liu Qi Yin (Traumatology Flowing Qi Decoction)
Composition: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) processed with ginger, Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) stir-fried with salt water, Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus) stir-fried with bran, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) stir-fried with wine, Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Wu Yao (Linderae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [each 0.7 qian], Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Nan Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) [each 0.5 qian].
Usage: Add one slice of fresh ginger and two zhong of water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths, and take warm.
[Prescription Verse] Liu Qi Yin soothes qi movement and resolves phlegm-saliva congestion; it contains Ren Shen, Hou Po, Jie Geng, Bai Zhi, Fang Feng, Zi Su, Huang Qi, Zhi Qiao, Rou Gui, Mu Xiang, Gan Cao, Wu Yao, Bing Lang, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, and Chuan Xiong.
Another Formula: Jin Feng Hua Tan Gao (Golden Phoenix Phlegm-Resolving Plaster)
Composition: Feng Xian Hua (Impatiens balsamina flower) (remove green calyx, grind into powder, one handful), Da Cong natural juice (one tea cup), Hao Mi Cu (Good rice vinegar) (one tea cup), Guang Jiao (Colla Corii Asini) (cut into rice-grain size, soak in scallion juice, 3 qian), Ren Zhong Bai (Calcinatus Hominis Os) (calcined gently over fire to preserve nature, grind into powder, 8 qian).
Preparation and Usage: First, melt the scallion juice, rice vinegar, and Colla Corii Asini in a pot. Then add the Impatiens balsamina powder and boil into a plaster. Finally, add the Calcinatus Hominis Os powder, remove from heat, and stir constantly. When using, melt it by double-boiling. Spread thinly on paper according to the size of the phlegm nodule, apply as a plaster, wait for it to fall off naturally, and then replace with a new plaster.
[Prescription Verse] Jin Feng Hua Tan Gao eliminates hardness and firmness; applying it is more curative for conditions where damp-phlegm spreads and knots. It consists of Impatiens balsamina, Calcinatus Hominis Os, Colla Corii Asini, rice vinegar, and scallion juice boiled together and spread on paper for application.
