[Verse] Pi Fan Zheng (Eyelid Eversion) manifests as eversion of the eyelids, resembling the shape of a tongue licking the lips. The eversion is caused by swelling of the eyelids and tightness of the eyelashes; its pathological origin lies in blood stasis and qi stagnation in the Stomach Meridian.
[Commentary] This condition arises from blood stasis and qi stagnation in the Stomach Meridian and is common in children. The eyelids evert outward, taking on a shape similar to a tongue licking the lips. Similarly, in cases of smallpox-related eye ulcers, if the eyelids are swollen and the eyelid margins are tense, the eyelids will also evert. Treatment should focus on purging accumulated heat from the Spleen and Stomach; administering Xie Huang San (Elixir to Drain the Yellow) will lead to recovery. There are also cases of inward eversion, known in ophthalmology as Quan Mao Dao Jie (In-turned Eyelashes). Cases with lax or normal eyelid margins without eversion correspond to Bao Chui Nan Shi (Ptosis Hindering Vision) in ophthalmology.
Formula: Xie Huang San (Elixir to Drain the Yellow)
Composition: Shi Gao (Calcined Gypsum, 5 qian), Zhi Zi Ren (Raw Gardenia Seed, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root, 3 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, wine-mixed, lightly fried until fragrant, 2 liang), Xi Xian Cao (Siegesbeckiae Herba, wine-steamed, sun-dried, 4 liang).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Adults with strong constitutions take 2 qian, those with weak constitutions take 1 qian, and children take 6-7 fen. Mix with boiling water and swallow.
[Verse] Xie Huang San treats Pi Fan Zheng (Eyelid Eversion); it contains Gypsum, Gardenia, Licorice, and Saposhnikovia. When ground together with Siegesbeckiae Herba into a fine powder and taken with boiling water, it yields miraculous results.
[Verse] Lou Jing Chuang (Chronic Dacryocystitis/Canthal Ulcer) arises at the inner canthus, caused by Liver Heat and Wind-Dampness, affecting the Jing Ming (BL1) acupoint of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. It presents with redness, swelling, and pain; if it ulcerates with thick pus, it heals easily. If the pus is thin and green-black, healing is difficult.
[Commentary] This lesion occurs at the inner canthus, resulting from Liver Heat and Wind-Dampness, manifesting at the Jing Ming (BL1) acupoint of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. This point is where tears gather. Initially, it appears like a bean or date, with redness, swelling, and pain. Although the visible sore may seem small, the root cause is deep. If it ulcerates and discharges sticky white pus, it is a favorable sign (Shun); if it discharges green-black pus or a paste-like substance, it is dangerous (Xian). In the early stage, administer Shu Feng Qing Gan Tang (Decoction to Dispel Wind and Clear the Liver). After ulceration, insert Huang Ling Yao (Yellow Spirit Medicine) strips into the wound and apply Wan Ying Gao (Universal Ointment) externally, allowing the wound to gradually contract. If pus drains from deep within the inner canthus, forming a fistula that is hard to heal, or if excessive tearing causes dryness inside the eye, healing is delayed further. If the ulceration severs the eyelid margin (Lian Xian), it is incurable.
Formula: Shu Feng Qing Gan Tang (Decoction to Dispel Wind and Clear the Liver)
Composition: Dang Gui Wei (Tail of Angelica Sinensis Root), Chi Shao (Red Peony Root), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepeta Spikelet), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower), Sheng Zhi Zi (Raw Gardenia Fruit), Bo He (Mentha Haplocalyx) (each 1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit, heart removed), Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle Flower, 2 qian), Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root, 5 fen), Deng Xin (Juncus Medulla, 50 cun). Decoct in water and take after meals.
[Verse] Shu Feng Qing Gan Tang treats Lou Jing Chuang (Chronic Dacryocystitis/Canthal Ulcer), effectively clearing Liver Heat and dispersing Wind. It includes Angelica Tail, Peony, Honeysuckle, Ligusticum, Chrysanthemum, and Licorice, along with Bupleurum, Forsythia, Gardenia, Mentha, Schizonepeta, and Saposhnikovia.
Another Formula: Huang Ling Yao (Yellow Spirit Medicine) and Wan Ying Gao (Universal Ointment) (see Chapter on Ulcers).
