[Formula Song] Pterygium (Pterygium) in the eye is caused by Heart Fire. Excess Fire presents with deep red color at the canthus major (medial/lateral canthus, specifically referring to the canthus associated with the Heart meridian), while deficiency Fire presents with pale red color and fine blood vessels at the canthus minor. The pterygium often feels distended or painful.
[Annotation] This condition arises at both canthi of the eye, with stasis-induced fleshy growth protruding and causing intermittent pain. It is generally attributed to Heart Fire. However, Fire can be either excess or deficiency. If the fleshy tissue at the canthus major is deep red, it indicates Excess Fire of the Heart Meridian, and Heishen Tang (Black Ginseng Decoction) should be administered. If the filamentous tissue at the canthus minor is pale red, it indicates Deficiency Fire of the Heart Meridian, and Jueming San (Cassia Seed Powder) should be used as the primary treatment. Externally, Qingliang Yuan (Cooling Round) decocted for washing should be applied; with prolonged use, it will heal spontaneously.
Formula: Heishen Tang (Black Ginseng Decoction)
Composition: Heishen (Radix Panacis Nigrae), Kushen (Cortex Phellodendri Chinensis), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, bran-fried), Caojueming (Semen Cassiae), Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Palmati, stir-baked), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae). Each ingredient weighs 2 qian.
Preparation: Decoct in water and take after meals.
[Formula Song] Heishen Tang treats pain at the canthus major, where internal pterygium is formed by Excess Fire. It contains Kushen, Zhizi, Juhua, Huanglian, Zhike, Caojueming, Cheqianzi, Fangfeng, Dahuang, and Shengma.
Another Formula: Jueming San (Cassia Seed Powder)
Composition: Yuzhu (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, bran-fried), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, raw), Lingyangjiao (Cornu Saigae Tataricae, shaved powder), each weighing 1 liang; Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis), Qingxiangzi (Semen Celosiae), Caojueming (Semen Cassiae), each weighing 5 qian.
Preparation: Grind into a fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Take after meals, and take another dose before bedtime.
[Formula Song] Jueming San treats pterygium attacked by Deficiency Fire. It contains Yuzhu, Huanglian, Zhike, Chuanxiong, Cheqianzi, Qingxiangzi, Lingyangjiao, and Gancao. Taken as a powder mixed with water, it is highly effective.
Another Formula: Qingliang Yuan (See Section on Fungal Toxins)
[Formula Song] Nasal carbuncle (Nose Carbuncle) arises between the nasal bridge, originating from stagnant Fire in the Lung Meridian affecting the Du Mai (Governing Vessel). The lesion is hard, purple, and often feels numb and painful. It can be cured using Qianjin Xianfang via the method of supporting the interior.
[Annotation] This condition arises on the nasal bridge, belonging to the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) meridian. Since the nose is the orifice of the Lung, it also relates to the Lung. It is formed by the coagulation of stagnant Fire in the Lung Meridian. The lesion is hard, purple, and feels numb and painful. Initially, Qianjin Lulu Tang (Thoroughwort Decoction of the Thousand Gold Formulas) should be taken to disperse and resolve the stagnant toxin. Subsequently, Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Preserving Life Decoction) should be used, added with Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Bohe (Herba Menthae Haplocalycis), and Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) to eliminate swelling. If swelling and pain do not subside and suppuration is imminent, Tuoli Tou Nong Tang (Decoction for Supporting the Interior and Expelling Pus) should be used as the primary treatment. External treatments follow the guidelines in the Section on Ulcers and Sores.
Formula: Qianjin Lulu Tang (Thoroughwort Decoction of the Thousand Gold Formulas)
Composition: Lulu (Radix Agrimoniae Pilosae, 1 liang), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, bran-fried, 1 liang), Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Palmati, 1.5 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, raw, 1 liang), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 1 liang), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis, 1 liang), Bailian (Bulbus Belamcandae, 1 liang), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae, heart removed, 1 liang), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, 1 liang).
Preparation: Grind into powder. Use 2 qian per dose with one zhong of water, three slices of ginger, and 1 qian of Bohe leaves. Decoct until five fen remains, and take warm. The goal is to achieve smooth bowel movements.
[Formula Song] Qianjin Lulu Tang treats wet nasal carbuncle onset; it is more effective for purple, hard, and painful lesions. It contains Lulu, Zhike, Pu Xiao, Dahuang, Gancao, Mahuang, Huangqin, Bailian, Lianqiao, and Shengma.
Another Formula: Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Preserving Life Decoction) (See Section on Swollen Sores)
Tuoli Tou Nong Tang (Decoction for Supporting the Interior and Expelling Pus) (See Section on Head Abscesses Invading the Brain)
