The *Chan Jing* (Classic of Childbirth) states: It is said that if one encounters Qinglong (Azure Dragon) and Chuansong (Transmission) on the day or branch, possessing Wangxiang qi (auspicious energy of kingship), such individuals are highly talented and versatile.

Another version says: If Kuigang (Big Dipper's head star) is added to the life branch, and Tiangang (Heavenly Gang) is added to the birth month, the person lacks filial piety and caution in youth; however, if Gongcao (Merit Official) and Chuansong (Transmission) are seen, they possess fraternal duty.

Yet another version states: If Kuigang is added to the life branch and appears on the birth month, encountering Shenhou (Divine Post) indicates disaster from traveling far or fleeing; encountering Daji (Great Auspiciousness) implies freedom and ease; encountering Gongcao (Merit Official) brings fortune and virtue; encountering Dachong (Great Clash) signifies poverty and uprightness; encountering Tiangang (Heavenly Gang) means men face poverty and disasters like wild tigers or wolves, while women worry about death in childbirth or miscarriage. Encountering Taiyi (Supreme One) brings many illnesses and prison disasters; Shengguang (Victorious Light) indicates fire damage; Xiaoji (Small Auspiciousness) implies freedom and ease; Chuansong (Transmission) brings fortune and prosperity; Dengming (Ascending Brightness) indicates prison disasters.

The *Chan Jing* also says: A man with strong bones and a square body, a square and flat face with upright eyes, who does not look askance, necessarily has an unrighteous heart if he looks askance. Walking straight but slowly, moving like a tiger without bowing to others. The mouth opens wide and closes small. Speaking slowly and calmly, without looking at the face of the person ahead when speaking, is the physiognomy of a gentleman. Eyes darting frequently and stealing glances, always looking at the face of the person ahead when speaking, is the physiognomy of a petty person. Therefore, the neck should be long like a swan, moving only after the body turns. The gaze should be fixed like a tiger watching prey, seeing only after raising the head. Cheeks like a lion's, voice like bells and drums, is a virtuous and auspicious physiognomy.

The *Shiji* (Record of Centuries) says: Generally, human height is not determined by auspicious length or weakness. Shun was very short and small; the Duke of Zhou was short and small; Ye Gong was also short and small. King Ling of Zhou was born with beard and mustache hair, which is an auspicious physiognomy. King Wu had aligned teeth. (This is called the Gengqiang physiognomy.) His father, King Wen, asked Pei Xiu, "Are there people with good physiognomies?" Pei Xiu replied, "The Central Army Commander stands with sideburns reaching the ground, hands extending past the knees; this is not the physiognomy of a subject." Shun had double pupils; Xiang Yu also had double pupils; Emperor Ling of Han had hair under his feet and was short in stature, which is a noble physiognomy. Tang [of Shang] had light around the elbows (four seasons); inner left arm generated cloth/hair; Yellow Emperor had broad cheeks and dragon-like countenance; those with square mouths have the physiognomy of virtue and martial prowess. Confucius had prominent cheekbones; Yao had eight-character eyebrows, having the physiognomy of a benevolent person. Zi Gu had a space of one inch between the eyebrows, the physiognomy of a strong heart. Yu had a tiger nose and embraced the Big Dipper; Fuxi had large eyes; Cangjie had four eyes; all are physiognomies of wisdom and virtue.

Ying Qing recorded: Laozi had Bagua patterns on the soles of his feet, long eyebrows, three gates in the ears, double pillars in the nose, thick lips, a square mouth, yellow complexion; this is the physiognomy of wisdom and virtue.
