The *Xuan Nü Jing* (Classic of the Mysterious Woman) records: The Yellow Emperor (Huangdi) asked: "If one desires sexual intercourse but the penis does not become erect, can it be used forcibly?" Xuan Nü replied: "It cannot. For the proper way of engaging in intercourse, the man must achieve the 'Four Arrivals' (si zhi, 四至) before he can elicit the woman's 'Nine Qi' (jiu qi, 九气)." The Yellow Emperor asked: "What are the 'Four Arrivals'?" Xuan Nü said: "If the jade stem (penis) is not engorged (nu, 怒), the 'Harmony Qi' (he qi, 和气) has not arrived. If it is engorged but not large, the 'Muscle Qi' (ji qi, 肌气) has not arrived. If it is large but not hard, the 'Bone Qi' (gu qi, 骨气) has not arrived. If it is hard but not warm, the 'Spirit Qi' (shen qi, 神气) has not arrived. Therefore, engorgement is the manifestation of essence (jing, 精); largeness is the pass of essence; hardness is the door of essence; warmth is the gate of essence. When the four qi arrive and one regulates them according to the Dao (the Way), the 'opening mechanism' does not open recklessly, and essence is not discharged."
The *Xuan Nü Jing* records: The Yellow Emperor said: "Excellent! How can one know the woman's 'Nine Qi'?" Xuan Nü said: "Observe her nine qi states to know them. When a woman takes a deep breath (da xi, 大息) and swallows saliva, the 'Lung Qi' (fei qi, 肺气) has arrived. When she makes sounds (ming, 鸣) and sucks on the man, the 'Heart Qi' (xin qi, 心气) has arrived. When she embraces and holds the man tightly, the 'Spleen Qi' (pi qi, 脾气) has arrived. When the vaginal opening (yin men, 阴门) is slippery and moist, the 'Kidney Qi' (shen qi, 肾气) has arrived. When she diligently and gently bites (zha ren, 咋人) the man, the 'Bone Qi' (gu qi, 骨气) has arrived. When she hooks her feet around the man, the 'Sinew Qi' (jin qi, 筋气) has arrived. When she fondles and plays with the jade stem (penis), the 'Blood Qi' (xue qi, 血气) has arrived. When she grasps and plays with the man's nipples, the 'Flesh Qi' (rou qi, 肉气) has arrived. Through prolonged intercourse, stimulating her clitoris (shi, 实) to arouse her desire, all nine qi will arrive. If any qi does not arrive, it can lead to damage of the countenance. Therefore, if a qi has not arrived, one can apply its specific method ('number', shu, 数) to treat it. (Note: Current examination finds that all versions lack 'one qi'.)"
The *Xuan (Su) Nü Jing* records: The Yellow Emperor said: "Regarding the mentioned 'Nine Methods' (jiu fa, 九法), I have not heard their techniques. I wish you would describe them to enlighten my mind, so I may store them in a stone chamber and practice their methods."
Xuan Nü said: "The Nine Methods. The first is called 'Dragon Turns Over' (Long Fan, 龙翻). Have the woman lie supine facing upward. The man lies prone on top of her, his thighs hidden by the bed. The woman raises her yin region to receive the jade stem (penis). It thrusts into the depth of her vagina ('grain's core', gu shi, 谷实) and also attacks upward. Movements are loose, slow, and rocking: eight shallow and two deep thrusts, departing as if dead and returning as if alive. The penis becomes hot, strong, and hard. The woman becomes pleasurably agitated, her joy like singing, causing her vagina to close firmly. All diseases vanish.
The second is called 'Tiger Steps' (Hu Bu, 虎步). Have the woman lie prone, buttocks raised and head lowered. The man kneels behind her, holding her abdomen, then inserts the jade stem (penis), thrusting into her central extreme (zhong ji, 中极) area, ensuring deep and tight penetration. Advancing and retreating rub against each other, performing the count of five times eight (forty). The rhythm becomes natural. The woman's vagina closes and opens, fluids overflow outward. Upon completion, rest. All diseases do not arise; the man benefits and becomes more vigorous.
The third is called 'Gibbon Seizes' (Yuan Bo, 猿搏). Have the woman lie supine. The man lifts her thighs, bending her knees back past her chest, raising both buttocks and back. Then he inserts the jade stem (penis), thrusting into her vaginal opening ('smelly rat', chou shu, 臭鼠). The woman becomes agitated and moves. Fluids flow like rain. The man presses deeply, extremely strong and engorged. Stop when the woman reaches climax. All diseases heal spontaneously.
The fourth is called 'Cicada Clings' (Chan Fu, 蝉附). Have the woman lie prone, body straight. The man lies prone behind her, deeply inserting the jade stem (penis). He slightly raises her buttocks to knock against her 'red pearl' (clitoris, chi zhu, 赤珠), performing the count of six times nine (fifty-four). The woman becomes agitated, fluids flow, the inside of the vagina moves urgently, the outside becomes open and relaxed. Stop when the woman reaches climax. The seven impairments (qi shang, 七伤) are spontaneously removed.
The fifth is called 'Turtle Soars' (Gui Teng, 龟腾). Have the woman lie supine. She bends her two knees. The man pushes her feet up to her breasts. He deeply inserts the jade stem (penis), thrusting into the 'infant girl' (ying nü, 婴女, vaginal depth). Depth and shallowness follow measure, ensuring it hits her 'reality' (clitoris, shi, 实). The woman then feels pleasure, her body sways and lifts, fluids flow and overflow. Then insert deeply to the extreme. Stop when the woman reaches climax. Practice this without losing essence; strength increases a hundredfold.
The sixth is called 'Phoenix Soars' (Feng Xiang, 凤翔). Have the woman lie supine. She raises her own feet. The man kneels between her thighs, both hands supporting on the mat. He deeply inserts the jade stem (penis), thrusting against her 'kun stone' (kun shi, 昆石, posterior fornix), hard and hot, pulling inward. Have the woman move, performing the count of three times eight (twenty-four). Buttocks urgently clash. The woman's vagina opens and relaxes, spontaneously emitting fluids. Stop when the woman reaches climax. All diseases dissipate.
The seventh is called 'Rabbit Sucks the Fine Hair' (Tu Shun Hao, 兔吮毫). The man lies supine, legs straight. The woman straddles him, knees outside. The woman's back is toward his head, feet toward his feet. She supports herself on the mat, head lowered. Then she inserts the jade stem (penis), thrusting against her 'qin strings' (qin xian, 琴弦, shallow vaginal area). The woman climaxes, fluids flow out like a spring, joyful, harmonious, and happy, moving her spirit and body. Stop when the woman reaches climax. All diseases do not arise.
The eighth is called 'Fish Connects Scales' (Yu Jie Lin, 鱼接鳞). The man lies supine. The woman straddles him, both thighs forward. She inserts it calmly and slowly, entering slightly and then stopping, just making contact without deep penetration, like a child holding a nipple. Let the woman rock alone, ensuring it is slow and prolonged. The man withdraws when the woman climaxes. This treats all accumulations and gatherings (jie ju, 结聚).
The ninth is called 'Cranes Cross Necks' (He Jiao Jing, 鹤交颈). The man sits upright with legs apart ('ji sitting', ji zuo, 箕坐). The woman straddles his thighs, hands embracing the man's neck. She inserts the jade stem (penis), thrusting against the 'wheat teeth' (mai chi, 麦齿, vaginal opening), ensuring it hits her 'reality' (clitoris). The man holds the woman's buttocks, assisting her rocking and lifting. The woman feels pleasure spontaneously, fluids flow and overflow. Stop when the woman reaches climax. The seven impairments are spontaneously cured."
