大较其发之源,皆因三种。三种者风痫、惊痫、食痫是也。风痫因衣浓行出,出而风入为之;

The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: The "cunbai" worm (Taenia solium, pork tapeworm) in children is one of the nine worms. It arises due to weakness of the fu and zang organs and is caused by eating raw chestnuts.
Furthermore, consuming milk or cheese immediately after eating raw fish can also lead to its generation.
The *Ge Shi Fang* records: Two jin of Coix Root (Yiyiren Gen), finely chopped, boiled in seven sheng of water until two sheng remain; divide into two doses for administration. It may also be prepared as a porridge.
The *Ji Yao Fang* states: Four liang of the white bark from the eastern-facing roots of Cornus officinalis (Shanzhuyu Gen), and three liang of peach tree white bark (Taobai Pi). Chop the above ingredients, soak in one sheng of wine overnight, remove the dregs, and take in one dose for excellent efficacy.
Another prescription: Drink the juice extracted from Phyllostachys edulis (Bianzhu); it has been verified effective.
Current commentary: Steaming them before use is preferable.
Another prescription: Boil pork and Areca Seed (Binglang) thickly, drink three sheng, and the worms will be completely expelled.
Another prescription: Consume many Torrey seeds (Feizi). (Current commentary: The *Qianjin Fang* records: Peel forty-nine Torrey seeds, take seven on an empty stomach in the morning during the first ten days of the month, finish within seven days; the worms dissolve into water, resulting in permanent cure.)
Current commentary: Grind Walnut Kernel (Hetao Ren) and apply externally.
The *Chan Jing* states: Scrape off the upper layer of processed silk fabric (Lianpi), take the middle white part, chop five sheng, boil in five sheng of water until two sheng remain. First let the child eat malt sugar (Xing) to induce thirst, then administer the decoction. Current commentary: The *Zimu Milu* records: Insert one piece of dried persimmon (Lianshi) into the anus.
Another prescription: Grind Mustard Seed (Jiezi) and apply externally.
Another prescription: Grind Realgar (Xionghuang), mix with vinegar, and apply externally; Areca Seed (Binglang Zi) is also good.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Epilepsy (Xian) is a disease of children. Those over ten years old are termed Dian, while those under ten are termed Xian. During an attack, symptoms may include traction of the mouth and eyes with upward rolling of the eyeballs, spasmodic extension of the limbs, rigidity of the back, or opisthotonos (backward bending of the neck). Various texts describe different names and syndromes for epilepsy/dian, but broadly, the source of their onset falls into three categories. These three are Wind Epilepsy (Feng Xian), Shock Epilepsy (Jing Xian), and Food Epilepsy (Shi Xian). Wind Epilepsy results from wearing heavy clothes outdoors, allowing wind pathogen to enter upon exposure; Shock Epilepsy arises from fright and loud crying; Food Epilepsy is caused by irregular breastfeeding or feeding. However, children have weak qi and blood and are easily injured and disturbed; thus, these three factors transform into various forms of epilepsy.
When any form of epilepsy is actively attacking, with limbs spasming and contracting, do not forcibly restrain them; restraint causes deformity and loss of mobility.
The *Duan Ju Fang* cites the *Xuan Zhong Ji*: There exists a female bird in the world, named Guquan or Gouhuang Gui; it likes to fly and cry at night during cloudy and rainy weather, lingering in villages. It calls out to those who come to it. This bird is exclusively female without males, does not lay eggs, and likes dust falling among feathers; if placed in an infant's clothing, it causes the infant to develop epilepsy, which leads to death, after which it transforms into that infant. Therefore, infants up to ten years old should not have their clothes exposed, especially in the seventh and eighth lunar months.
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states: There are 120 types of childhood shock epilepsy, with manifestations differing from the norm.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: The reason for epilepsy and tetanus lies in the imbalance of internal organ qi. Infants born with epilepsy do so because their five zang organs have not yet converged, blood and qi are not gathered, and the five meridians do not flow smoothly.
It further states: Moxibustion method for epilepsy: The fontanelle that has not closed, where the bone sutures move with respiration, is the most critical point. (Apply five moxa cones.)
It also states: Apply moxibustion to the whorl of hair on the vertex, Danzhong (CV-17), Jueque (CV-14), Shenque (CV-8), Chize (LU-5), Laogong (PC-8), Futu (ST-32), Zusanli (ST-36), and RanGu (KI-7).
Current commentary: The *Mingtang Jing* prohibits moxibustion on Futu (ST-32).
It further states: For treating epilepsy with moxibustion, one must first purge the bowels to weaken the child's excess condition, then apply moxibustion while the child is deficient. If moxibustion is applied without purging when the condition is excess, qi becomes blocked front and back, which can be fatal.
It further states: Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction) is indicated. (See Volume 5 of this book for the formula.)
The *Guang Li Fang* records: For nuclear shock epilepsy causing unconsciousness and confusion... Prescription:
Natural Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), size of a soybean, mixed with honey, taken with water; immediate effect.
Another prescription: Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao) tip, ground, mixed with two large he of water; taken orally for immediate effect.
The *Zhenzhong Fang*: Take silverfish found in paper, mix with sheep milk, and the patient recovers.
