The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: Shan-zhang malaria (Mountain Miasma Malaria) originates in the Lingnan region, caused by inhaling the miasmic qi of the mountains. Its presentation involves alternating chills and fever with regular periodicity. This is due to pathogenic factors combining with the miasmic qi of mountain streams and valleys.
The *Qipo Fang* (Prescriptions of Qibo) essential formula for treating zhang-malaria:
Hengshan (Radix Daphnes, 3 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 2 liang), Guangmingsha (Realgar, 1 liang).
Pulverize these three herbs and sift them. Mix with honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take three pills before the onset of the attack, two pills during the attack, and one pill after the attack. Administer another dose for the following three days. Observe dietary restrictions for three days.
The *Luyan Fang* (Verified Prescriptions) method for treating malaria and shan-qi (mountain miasma):
Hengshan (Radix Daphnes, 2 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 2 liang).
Slice the herbs and soak in one da-sheng of white wine overnight. Strain out the dregs and divide into two doses. Take one dose before the onset of the attack, and another dose just prior to the attack. Vomiting is permitted. Avoid raw/cold foods, sour substances, and slippery alcoholic beverages.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Jianri-malaria (Every-other-day Malaria) occurs when pathogenic factors and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) circulate together through the Six Fu-organs but occasionally fall out of phase and fail to interact properly, causing pathogenic factors to press inward upon the Five Zang-organs.
The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Verified Prescriptions) formula for treating malaria that occurs every other day or at night:
Shumi (Sorghum Grain, 100 grains), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 8 liang, crushed), Hengshan (Radix Daphnes, 3 liang), Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf, 3 liang).
