The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: Where are the pathogenic sites of warm malaria (*Wen Nue*) and cold malaria (*Han Nue*)? Warm malaria arises from contracting wind-cold pathogens in winter; the qi hides within the bone marrow. By spring, heat emerges...
The *Tong Xuan Jing* states: The symptoms of warm malaria include persistent fever with slight chills, mental oppression, and a red complexion. From the *Fa Zi Xin Fang*: Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, half a jin, ground, wrapped in silk), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, three liang), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex, three liang), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, three liang), Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba, one sheng). Boil in nine sheng of water until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses. The interval between doses should correspond to the time it takes to walk six or seven li.
The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: Cold malaria results from the intermingling of yin and yang. When yang is deficient, yin prevails; when yin prevails, cold manifests. It originates internally and extends externally, thus affecting both interior and exterior...
The *Tong Xuan Jing* states: The symptoms of cold malaria include shivering, aversion to cold, and erecting of body hair. Upon onset, there is a sensation of warmth but little actual heat. Formula: Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, four fen, ground), Xiong Huang (Realgar, five fen, ground), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, four fen), Heng Shan (Dichroae Radix, five fen), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, four fen, calcined). Make honey pills the size of wu zi (seeds of Styrax tonkinensis). Take seven pills per dose, twice daily, on an empty stomach, taken with gruel.
The *Zhu Bing Hou Lun* states: If a patient has retained phlegm and solidified masses in the chest and diaphragm prior to contracting malaria, it will cause fullness and distension below the heart, irritability of qi, and vomiting. From the *Fan Wang Fang*, the Heng Shan Tang (Dichrae Root Decoction) for treating malaria with persistent phlegm-solidity: Heng Shan (Dichroae Radix, six fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, four fen), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, three fen), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, three fen), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, four fen). These five herbs are sliced and boiled in five sheng of water until two sheng remain. Divide into three doses. Finish the medicine at the time of the malaria attack.
The *Zhu Bing Hou Lun* states: Whenever malaria persists for a long time without recovery, both the exterior and interior become deficient, the invading pathogen remains dispersed, and the true qi fails to recover. Thus, although the disease may temporarily cease, minor exertion...
The *Ji Yan Fang* treats labor malaria (*Lao Nue*) that persists over time and resists other treatments: Sheng Zhang Da Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, length of a large tiger's mouth), sliced and boiled in six sheng of water until two sheng remain. Divide into two doses. The first dose is taken approximately one meal-time before the onset of the attack; the second dose...
The *Ge Shi Fang* states a formula for chronic malaria that does not cease: Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, one cun bi of powder). One hour before the onset, boil in one and a half sheng of wine until it boils three times. Drink all while hot, cover with blankets to induce sweating, and it will be cured immediately. Another formula: Zhi Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted and powdered), take one cun bi with wine. Take three doses by the time of the attack, combined with moxibustion, ensuring cessation. From the *Seng Shen Fang*, Tao Ye Tang (Peach Leaf Decoction) for labor malaria: Tao Ye (Peach Leaves, fourteen pieces), Heng Shan (Dichroae Radix, four liang). Soak these two herbs in two sheng of wine overnight, leave exposed in the courtyard, place a knife on the vessel.
