The *Book of Pathogenesis* (Bingyuan Lun) states: The principle of moxibustion is to stop when the pathogen is addressed and to allow the sore to heal once the disease is cured. If the internal heat has not been resolved, or if one contracts wind-cold, the condition may persist for a long time without healing.
The *Ge Shi Fang* provides a prescription for treating fire sores and moxa sores that refuse to dry out:
Grind cuttlefish bone (Hai Piao Xiao, Ommastrephes Sepiae Endoconcha) into a fine powder and apply it as a dusting powder.
Another prescription: Apply ash from burning mulberry branches mixed with water to the affected area.
The *Qianjin Fang* provides a prescription for treating non-healing moxa sores:
Apply moxibustion to the site daily; after six or seven moxa cones (Zhuang), it will naturally heal.
The *Bian Que Zhen Jiu Jing* states: For cases where moxibustion causes sores that remain moist and fail to heal for a long time, turning into fire abscesses (Huo Ju, a severe type of carbuncle), use this prescription:
Take the bark from the east side of the mulberry tree (Gu Shu, Morus alba), boil it thoroughly, remove the dregs, and simmer until thick like syrup. Mix with powder and apply to the sore.
Another prescription: Burn cow dung into ash and apply it to the affected area.
Another prescription: Burn rabbit fur into ash; this treats non-healing moxa sores.
The *Seng Shen Fang* provides a prescription for treating non-healing moxa sores:
White honey (1 liang) Cuttlefish bone (Hai Piao Xiao, Ommastrephes Sepiae Endoconcha) (2 zhu)
Mix these two ingredients evenly and apply the paste to the sore.
The *Ji Yan Fang* provides the Scallion White Ointment (Xie Bai Gao) for promoting tissue regeneration and relieving pain in moxa sores:
Scallion white (Xie Bai, Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus) Angelica root (Dang Gui, Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 2 liang) Angelica dahurica (Bai Zhi, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (1 liang) Mutton fat (Yang Zhi, Ovis Aries Lard) (1 sheng)
Finely chop the four ingredients, simmer them with the mutton fat, remove the dregs, and apply the ointment to the affected area. Apply twice daily.
The *Book of Pathogenesis* (Bingyuan Lun) states: After the pus from a moxa sore has drained, if swelling and acute pain occur, this is due to contracting wind-cold.
The *Ge Shi Fang* provides a prescription for treating moxa sores and various minor sores that have become swollen and painful due to exposure to water, wind, and cold:
Take yellow earth from the center of the stove, mix with water, heat it, and soak the affected area.
Another prescription: Simply apply moxibustion to the area to generate heat. When hot, the stinging pain will subside temporarily. Perform this six to seven times daily for excellent results and healing.
The *Fan Wang Fang* provides a prescription for treating swollen and painful moxa sores:
Take Chinese chives (Jiu Cai, Allii Tuberosi Herba), crush them, and apply to the sore. Apply moxibustion to allow heat to penetrate the sore. Do this three times daily.
The *Yi Men Fang* provides a treatment for swollen and acutely painful moxa sores:
Celtis bark (Bo Bai Pi, Celtis Sinensis Cortex) Angelica root (Dang Gui, Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 3 liang) Scallion white (Xie Bai, Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus) (1 sheng, sliced) Lard (Zhu Gao, Sus Fat) (1 sheng)
Chop the ingredients and soak the three herbs in vinegar (Ku Jiu, Acetum) overnight. Simmer over low heat, heating and cooling three times, until the scallion turns yellow. Remove the dregs and apply to the sore; this is very effective.
Another prescription: Apply moxibustion directly to the moxa sore opening, six to seven cones daily, until healed.
