The *Yimen Fang* (Medical Gate Formulas) records: A formula for treating various ulcerated and dry sores:
Take the white bark of willow (*Salix alba*), burn it to ash, and apply the powder to the sore. For scalds or burns, using the white bark of cypress (*Cupressus*) is also excellent.
The *Jiuji Danyan Fang* (Emergency Single-Tested Formulas) contains a formula for washing hundred types of sores:
Take a large handful each of the white bark of pagoda tree (*Sophora japonica*) and cypress leaves (*Cupressi Cacumen*), chop them. Boil in three sheng of water until one sheng remains, and use this liquid to wash all kinds of sores, which will lead to recovery.
The *Seng Shen Fang* (Monk Shen's Formulas) treats wind-water edema within sores:
Charcoal white ash (one fen) and Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate).
Mix these two substances with lard (Porcine Fat) and apply to the swollen and ulcerated area. Fluid will drain out, pain will cease, and the effect is very good.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Master Ge's Formulas) treats swelling caused by sores, often resulting from sitting on damp ground or contracting wind-cold; if the swelling enters the abdomen, it can be fatal. Treatment formula:
Ash juice from mulberry branches (*Mori Ramulus*). Warm and soak the affected area; this is highly effective.
Another formula: Burn white cogon grass (*Imperatae Rhizoma*) to ash, mix with warm water, apply thickly as a compress. Change whenever the sore dries up, no more than four or five times. (The *Qianjin Fang* adopts this method.)
The *Fan Wang Yi Fang* (Fan Wang's Alternative Formulas) treats swelling of various sores caused by wind:
Take thirty jin of the bark from oak roots (*Quercus*), peel it, chop it, and boil until soft. Add one handful of Indigofera tinctoria leaf (*Indigotidis Folium*) (another version uses one sheng of salt). Keep it lukewarm and soak the sore. Pus and blood will discharge; doing this daily leads to recovery. (Note: The *Ge Shi Fang* has no Indigo but includes salt. The *Qianjin Fang* boils with three dan of water.)
The *Longmen Fang* (Dragon Gate Formulas) treats wind-water swelling and pain in sores:
Take green onion leaves (*Allii Fistulosi Folium*) and dried yellow leaves, boil together to make a decoction, and soak the area while hot.
Another formula: Heat the root of Datura metel (*Daturae Radix*), slightly cut the head, and apply while hot to the sore. Replace when cool.
The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Proven Formulas) treats severe swelling due to sores, which can cause death within days, or conditions caused by wind-cold, water toxicity, or contact with fox feces and thorns:
Burn straw (He Stems), cow and horse manure, and fresh mulberry twigs. Use materials that produce abundant smoke for fumigation. Recovery occurs when fluids discharge. (Note: The *Ge Shi Fang* mentions millet and rice straws.)
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: For those suffering from burns, initially do not wash with cold objects, well-bottom mud, or honey. If heat meets cold, it cools down and drives deep into the bones, damaging the tendons. This is why patients with fire scalds often experience spasms and contraction.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas) treats sudden severe burns causing extreme pain, fainting, and unconsciousness:
Drink honey dissolved in cold water. If there is trismus (lockjaw) and spasms, pry open the mouth and administer.
Another formula: Gardenia Ointment Formula:
Gardenia fruit (*Gardeniae Fructus*) (twenty fruits), Angelica dahurica (*Angelicae Dahuricae Radix*) (five liang), Scutellaria baicalensis (*Scutellariae Radix*) (five liang).
Chop the three herbs, boil in five sheng of water and one sheng of sesame oil (*Sesami Oleum*) until the water evaporates. Strain, cool, and pour over the burn. The fire-heat toxin is removed, and the skin relaxes.
The *Ge Shi Fang* treats scalds or burns where sores have not yet formed:
Take cold ash, mix with water, and soak the area in a thick consistency.
Another formula: Break an egg, take the albumen (egg white), and apply.
Another formula: Apply soybean paste.
These three remedies prevent pain and the formation of sores.
Another formula: Apply powdered gypsum (*Gypsum Fibrosum*), and immediate recovery occurs.
If sores have already formed: Apply white honey (*Mel*), cover with bamboo membrane, change three times daily.
Another formula: Boil soybeans (*Sojae Semen*), extract the juice, and apply.
Another formula: Mix lard with rice flour and apply, five or six times daily.
Another formula: Wash and soak with good wine.
The *Jiyao Fang* (Extremely Important Formulas) treats scalds and burns leading to ulceration:
Slice pears (*Pyrus communis*) and apply as a patch; prevents ulceration and promotes healing.
Another formula: Fry willow white bark in lard and apply.
For existing sores: Burn willow bark to ash, powder it, and sprinkle on the wound.
The *Yimen Fang* states: When treating scalds or burns, before applying ointments or powders, first boil soybeans. Let the juice become concentrated, cool it, and wash the sore. Then apply the ointment or powder; this is excellent for stopping pain and preventing scars.
For unbearable pain from hot liquids, grease, or burns:
Finely shear dog hair, melt glue, mix with the hair, and apply. The scab falls off without pain; this is a mysterious remedy.
The *Seng Shen Fang* treats fire sores:
Apply clear sauce liquid mixed with honey; this is effective. Mix one part sauce liquid with two parts honey.
Another formula: Boil cypress bark in lard and apply.
The *Qianjin Fang* treats burns:
Use Dan Shen (*Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) in any amount, fry in sheep fat (*Ovis/Capis Adipocarnis*) and apply; this is miraculous. (Note: If sheep fat is unavailable, use lard.)
Another formula: Take one dead rat, fry in lard until completely dissolved, and apply to the wound for recovery without scarring. This is miraculous.
Another formula: Chew the white bark of elm (*Ulmus*), and apply.
The *Longmen Fang* treats burn wounds:
Apply fresh cow dung; leads to recovery.
Another formula: Mix mulberry wood ash with water and apply; leads to recovery.
Another formula: Soak fourteen gardenia fruits (*Gardeniae Fructus*) in three he of honey, and apply three times daily.
The *Xinlu Fang*: Crush Shenhuo Cao (*Artemisia capillaris* or similar herb known as "Caution Fire Grass") and apply.
The *Luyan Fang*: Sieve calcined alum (*Alumen*) or burnt stone powder, mix with water, and apply.
The *Fan Wang Fang* treats honey ointment for fire-ulcerated sores:
Edible honey (one liang) and Cuttlebone (*Sepiae Endoconcha*) (two zhu).
Grind both substances. Sieve the cuttlebone and mix into the honey. Stir well, apply thinly to the sore twice daily.
The *Qipo Fang* treats human burns where hair grows back in ulcerated areas:
Grind cypress white bark into powder, mix with lard, and apply; this is effective. One may also boil the juice and wash.
The *Shanfan Fang* treats ointments for fire sores and moxibustion sores:
Cypress white bark (*Cupressi Cortex*) (five liang), Licorice root (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) (one liang), Licorice root (one liang), Bamboo leaves (*Bambusae Folium*) (three liang), Rehmannia root (*Rehmanniae Radix Recens*) (five liang).
(Note: Text lists five items but says "four substances"). Chop, wrap in silk, and soak in five he of vinegar (*Acetum*) overnight. Fry in one sheng of lard until the bamboo leaves turn yellow. Strain and massage/apply to the sore.
