The *Bingyuan Lun* (Treatise on the Causes and Manifestations of Diseases) states: "Fan Ding Chuang" (Re-injury of Carbuncle) refers to a carbuncle that is about to heal but is re-inflicted or irritated. If one consumes excessive meat, fish, sesame seeds, or is exposed to the odor of foxes or people with body odor, it can cause the condition to recur, making it more severe than the initial onset. This leads to heat and swelling at the wound site, starting with chills followed by fever, heaviness in the four limbs, headache, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, and irritability. In such cases, it becomes difficult to treat.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: To determine if the condition is "Fan," observe whether there is stiffness of the spine and extreme, unbearable pain at the wound site. These are the signs of "Fan." The treatment method is:
Crush fresh Xanthium fruit (Cang'er) abundantly, extract the juice, drink it, and apply the juice topically to the affected area.
Another prescription: Take four sheng of water, boil a piece of snake skin as large as an egg until it boils three or four times, strain out the residue, and take the decoction orally; it will cure immediately.
It also says: If suffering from "Fan":
Take three sheng of cut Goji root (Gouqi Gen), add five sheng of water, and boil down to one sheng. Grind the remaining residue into powder, take one qian, mix it with one cup of the aforementioned juice, and ingest it. Take two to three doses per day.
Alternatively, drinking one or two cups of cold-pressed juice alone is even better.
The *Yimen Fang* (Medical Gate Prescriptions) provides a prescription for treating severe swelling due to "Fan Ding" approaching death:
Crush Chrysanthemum leaves (Ju Ye) to extract the juice and ingest it. In winter, use the roots; this is highly effective.
The *Luyan Fang* (Recorded Verified Prescriptions) provides a prescription for treating fatal "Fan Ding":
Apply Magnetite (Ci Shi) mixed with vinegar to seal the area; this will immediately draw out the toxin root.
Another prescription: Use Pyrite (Shi Liuhuang) heated red-hot iron to cauterize the spot.
Another prescription: Grind Yu Shi (a type of arsenic-containing mineral) with vinegar and apply it evenly over the area; it will cure immediately.
Another prescription: Take Dong Kui Zi (Abutilon theophrasti seeds), one cun bi (a measure roughly equivalent to a square inch), taken twice daily.
The *Jiuji Danyan Fang* (Emergency Single Verified Prescriptions) provides a prescription for treating "Fan Ding" where the toxin root has entered the abdomen, approaching death:
Take feces from a sow facing east, mix with water, squeeze out the juice, and drink one sheng; it will cure.
It also says: For those already dead:
Take one sheng of Da Huang Long Tang (Great Yellow Dragon Decoction), warm it up, insert it through a bent wooden tube into the mouth, and the patient will revive; this is very effective.
The *Bingyuan Lun* states: The manifestation of Du Zhong (Toxic Swelling) is not different from Feng Zhong (Wind Swelling); it often causes high fever. If the pathogenic toxin is severe and enters the abdomen, it can be fatal.
The *Jingxin Fang* (Heart-Mind Prescriptions) provides the Wuxiang Tang (Five Fragrances Decoction) for treating Du Zhong:
Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Lignum), Qing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Xun Lu Xiang (Olibanum/Resina Burserae), Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos) (each 1 liang), She Xiang (Moschus) (0.5 liang).
Take these five herbs, add five sheng of water, boil down to one and a half sheng, and divide into three doses.
The *Liu Juanzi Fang* (Liu Juanzi's Prescriptions) provides the Wuxiang Wan (Five Fragrances Pill) for treating malignant Qi toxic swelling:
Xun Lu Xiang (2 fen), Huo Xiang (Pogostemonis Herba) (2 fen), Qing Mu Xiang (2 fen), Ji She Xiang (Cardamomi Semen) (2.5 fen), Gui Jiu (Podophylli Fructus) (2 fen), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (8 fen), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (5 fen), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (3 fen), Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris) (1.5 fen), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) (2 fen), Xiong Huang (Realgar) (1 fen).
Grind these eleven substances, sift them, and bind with honey to form pills. Take four pills with Qing Bai Yin (clear white drink), each pill the size of a small bean, twice daily.
It also says: Wudu Gao (Five Poisons Ointment) for treating malignant Qi toxic swelling:
Shu Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (2 liang), Dang Gui (2 liang), Zhu Sha (2 liang), Wu Tou (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (1 sheng), Ku Jiu (Vinegar) (1.5 sheng), Zhu Fang (Porcine Adipose Tissue) (6 jin), Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus) (1 sheng, dehusked), Xiong Huang (2 liang).
Chop these eight substances, soak in vinegar overnight, add porcine adipose tissue, and simmer gently over low fire using the "three ups and three downs" method (heating, removing from fire, reheating repeatedly). When ready, rub the ointment onto the swollen area while facing the fire, three times daily.
The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Verified Prescriptions) provides the Yegan Gao (Night-Dry Ointment) for treating wind-heat toxic swelling that is red and dry at night:
Ye Gan (likely referring to a specific herb, possibly *Sophorae Tonkinensis* or similar local name used in ancient texts, here kept as Ye Gan) (2 liang), Chang Lu (Cut 1 sheng), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (4 liang), Sheng Ma (3 liang).
Chop these four substances, fry Chang Lu in three sheng of pig fat over low fire until slightly scorched yellow, strain off the residue, and massage onto the diseased area.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Master Ge's Prescriptions) provides a prescription for sudden onset of malignant toxic swelling that spreads slightly wide with acute pain:
Burn cow dung to ash, mix with vinegar, and apply to the area; replace when dry.
Another prescription: Crush Ren Zi (Perilla Seeds) into a paste and apply; replace when dry.
Another prescription: Grind Vinegar, Sheng Ma, Qing Mu Xiang, and Zi Zhen Tan (Purple Sandalwood) together, and apply with fingers to the painful area; this is good.
Another prescription: Simply incise the area with a sweet knife (non-rusty/clean knife) to drain toxic blood and apply medicine; this is even better. Note: Using Leeches (Shui Zhi) to suck out toxic blood is described in the prescriptions for treating carbuncles and sores.
The *Qianjin Fang* provides a prescription for malignant toxic swelling attaching to the scrotum or affecting one side, with acute changing pain radiating to the lower abdomen, which can be fatal within one night:
Crush Hui Xiang Cao (Fennel Herb) to extract juice, drink one sheng, take two to four doses daily. Apply the residue to the swelling. This is a divine foreign prescription introduced since the end of the Yuanjia era; it can revive the dead and is highly effective.
The *Jiuji Danyan Fang* provides a prescription for all kinds of malignant swelling with unbearable pain, regardless of cold or heat, large or small:
Take three Lang Dang Zi (Datura Seeds), rub them until cooked/warm, peel without breaking, and swallow; this is verified effective.
The *Meng Shen Shijing* (Meng Shen's Food Classic) provides a prescription for toxic swelling:
Powder Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Beans) and mix with Egg White (Ji Zi Bai), then apply; it cures immediately.
The *Tao Jing Bencao Zhu* (Commentary on Tao Hongjing's Materia Medica) provides a prescription for toxic swelling:
Boil Qing Mu Xiang and bathe; this is excellent.
Another prescription: Ingest Lan Zhi (Indigo Juice).
