The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: There are people who see clearly during the day but cannot see anything at dusk; this is commonly referred to as "Sparrow Eye" (Nyctalopia). The meaning is that like sparrows, they can see nothing when twilight falls.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) method for treating Sparrow Eye:
Instruct the person with nyctalopia to look at where sparrows roost at dusk, startle them so they fly up, and then recite a spell: "Zi Gong, Zi Gong, I return your blindness to you, you return your sight to me."
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Prescriptions by Master Ge) for treating Nyctalopia:
Apply blood from a live sparrow's head to the eyes; it is best to do this in the evening.
Another prescription: Apply mouse gallbladder bile; this is the most effective.
The *Xin Lu Dan Fang* (Single Prescriptions Newly Recorded) for treating Nyctalopia:
Apply bile from carp or crucian carp, sized like millet grains; both are good. (Current commentary: The *Ge Shi Fang* states: Apply carp bile or brain tissue.)
The *Qi Po Fang* (Prescriptions of Qi Po) for treating Nyctalopia:
Take pig liver, remove the white membrane on top, slice it into shreds, and eat it with mild ginger vinegar relish. Consume on an empty stomach for three consecutive days, and the illness will heal.
The *Lu Yan Fang* (Verified Records Prescriptions) for treating Nyctalopia:
Take one sheng of small garlic, chop it, boil it in four sheng of water until the garlic is cooked, place it in a vessel with a small opening, and steam the eyes over it. It will have a pungent sensation but no pain.
The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: The Qi of Yin and Yang all converge in the eyes. If wind-pathogenic factors and phlegm-qi invade the fu-zang organs, causing imbalance in the deficiency and excess of organ Qi, then Qi rushes to the eyes.
The *Yan Lun* (Treatise on Eyes) states: If eye pain occurs after a seasonal disease and a white opacity forms, this is called Yi (Corneal Opacity); if fleshy growths form after illness, this is called Fu Zhang (Pterygium).
It further states: If Yi has already formed, it should be incised with a sickle. Where red vessels are present, they should be hooked and cut off with a Gan Dao (a specific surgical knife). Daily needle-sickle treatment and application of powders are required; if hooking/cutting is involved, the condition may worsen.
The *Zhi Yan Fang* (Prescriptions for Treating Eyes) for treating acute eye conditions with pterygium and fleshy growths covering the black pupil, take this Liver-Purging Decoction:
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 2 liang), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 liang), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces).
These six herbs are boiled in six sheng of water to yield two sheng and five he. Divide into three doses.
Another prescription: At bedtime, apply Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate) onto the opacity. This treats opacities lasting thirty years and is very effective.
Furthermore: For sudden skin-like growths covering the pupil appearing red and white, use Salt Powder:
Yan (Halitum, 1 zhu), Tou Gou (Capitis Sudor, 1 zhu), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 zhu).
These three substances are calcined together and ground. Take a piece the size of a soybean and place it in the eye. Do not exceed two applications.
Furthermore: Hu Fen Powder for sudden vision loss and formation of opacity:
Hu Fen (Cerussa, 1 zhu), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 zhu).
Grind these two into powder, blow it into the eye using a tube, applying sparingly. This is highly effective.
Furthermore: Powder for treating polyps in the eye and white/red opacities:
Bei Chi (Concha Arcae, 1 fen), Zhen Zhu (Margarita, 1 fen).
Grind and sieve these two. Take a amount the size of a soybean with fingernails and place it on the opacity. The patient lies supine looking up; another person applies it. This can be repeated several times. Wipe clean after the duration of one meal.
Furthermore: Prescription for treating pterygium covering the pupil:
Based on which side of the eye hurts, moxa the point between the eyebrows corresponding to the pupil, seven moxibustion cones (Zhuang), and it will heal.
The *Ge Shi Fang* for sudden onset of opacity:
Moxa the transverse crease on the joint of the thumb, three cones. Moxa the right hand for the left eye, and the left hand for the right eye.
Another prescription: Calcinate Concha Arcae, sieve finely. While lying supine, have someone place the powder on the opacity. Do this two to three times a day, wipe away after some time.
The *Qianjin Fang* for treating eye opacity:
Mix male sparrow droppings with human breast milk, cook and blend, then apply to the pterygium. It will naturally rot and disappear.
The *Seng Shen Fang* (Prescriptions of Monk Shen) for treating white opacity:
Mu Li (Ostreae Concha) and Wu Zei Gu (Sepiae Endoconcha) in equal parts.
Grind and sieve, apply powder to the eye three times daily. This can also treat equine corneal opacity.
Another prescription: Boil Vespae Nidus (Furnari Nidus), wash the eye with the juice. Repeated washing is beneficial.
The *Fan Wang Fang* (Prescriptions of Fan Wang) for treating heat-induced sudden opacity:
Take white fish found in books, dry them thoroughly, grind into powder, and instill sparingly onto the opacity. One application leads to cure.
Another prescription: Crush Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus) to extract juice, wash the opacity with it. Doing this five to six times daily is beneficial.
The *Lu Yan Fang* Gan Jiang Powder for treating eye opacity:
Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Xiong Huang (Realgar) in equal parts.
Grind and sieve. Take amounts the size of rice grains and place on the opacity twice daily.
The *Ji Yan Fang* Long Gu Powder for treating white opacity covering the black pupil:
Long Gu (Dinosaur Bone, 1 fen), Bei Chi (Concha Arcae, 3 shells, calcined), Fan Shi (Alumen, 1 fen, calcined).
Grind and sieve these three. Apply to the eye twice daily.
The *Cui Yuxi Shi Jing* (Dietary Classic by Cui Yuxi) states: Consuming Yuanyang Fang (Anatidae Fat) is beneficial.
The *Ji Yao Fang* (Extremely Essential Prescriptions) records: Three individuals had fleshy growths growing behind the eye, extending forward to cover the black pupil. When cut, they regrew within three days and could not be stopped...
