The *Yufang Mijue* (Secrets of the Jade Chamber) records: Chonghezi said, the *I Ching* (Book of Changes) states: "Heaven manifests phenomena, revealing good and ill fortune; the sage imitates them." The *Liji* (Book of Rites) states: "If conception occurs when thunder is about to sound, the fetus will not develop properly, and there will surely be disaster." This is a warning established by the sages, which must be deeply respected and cautious. If heavenly anomalies appear above and earthly disasters arise below, how can humans, living between heaven and earth, not fear and revere these taboos? Yin-Yang intercourse is particularly a major taboo requiring reverence.
It also records: Peng Zu said: "Regulating sexual desire, one must eliminate excessive indulgence, and should also avoid extreme cold, extreme heat, strong winds and heavy rain, solar and lunar eclipses, earthquakes, and lightning. These are heavenly taboos." Drunkenness, overeating, uncontrolled anger or joy, sorrow, grief, worry, and fear are human taboos. Places of worship for mountain and river deities, areas where crops grow, wells, and stoves are geographical taboos. Having avoided these three types of taboos, those who violate them will cause disease, and their offspring will inevitably have short lives.
It also records: For those who are physically weak and debilitated, or whose various illnesses have not yet recovered, engaging in Yin-Yang intercourse will damage the body.
It also records: On days of "Moon Killing" (a specific astrological day), one must not engage in Yin-Yang intercourse, as it is ominous; furthermore, on Jian (Establishment), Po (Break), Zhi (Hold), Ding (Settle) days, and Xueji (Blood Taboo) days, one must not engage in Yin-Yang intercourse, as it damages the person. It also says:
Peng Zu said: "Adultery causes shortened lifespan not necessarily due to ghosts or gods. Some insert powder into the vagina, some use ivory phalluses, all of which steal years and life, leading to premature aging and rapid death."
The *Xiamu Tujing* (Illustrated Classic of Xiamu) records: The Yellow Emperor asked Qibo: "What is the reason for diseases contracted jointly by men and women?" Qibo replied: "Because they do not deduce the waxing and waning of the moon, nor understand its brightness and darkness, failing to know the prohibitions before engaging in Yin-Yang intercourse, thus both men and women fall ill."
On the fourth day after the new moon, one must not engage in Yin-Yang intercourse, or carbuncles and sores will erupt; on the sixth day after the new moon, one must not engage in Yin-Yang intercourse, therefore both men and women fall ill.
On the ninth day after the new moon, one must not engage in Yin-Yang intercourse; on the fifteenth day after the new moon, one must not engage in Yin-Yang intercourse; for women, wind-stroke is a major prohibition; on the thirtieth day of the waning moon, one must not engage in Yin-Yang intercourse, this is prohibited.
The *Huatuo Zhenjiu Jing* (Huatuo's Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) records: Before and after Dongzhi (Winter Solstice), Xiazhi (Summer Solstice), and Suidan (New Year's Day)—specifically two days before and two days after—moxibustion, acupuncture, and sexual intercourse are prohibited. Violating this kills people; it is a major prohibition.
The *Yangsheng Yaoji* (Essentials for Health Preservation) records: Sexual Taboos: During Rihui and Yueshuo (new moon and last day of the month), Shangxian, Xiawan, Wang (full moon), Liuding and Liubing days, Po days, the 28th day of the lunar month, lunar eclipses, strong winds and heavy rain, earthquakes, lightning and thunder, extreme cold and heat, days of seasonal transitions in Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, during the five days of sending off and welcoming spirits, Yin-Yang intercourse should not be performed. One's Benming year (natal year) and Xingnian (annual luck year) also have prohibitions; severe cases include Bingzi and Dingsi days after Summer Solstice. (Note: *Yufang Mijue* states: Bingwu and Dingwei days; the Yellow Emperor asked the *Sunu Jing*, originally written as Bingzi and Dingchou days.)
After Dongzhi, on Gengshen and Xinyou days, or after newly washing hair, after long-distance travel causing fatigue, or after great anger or joy, one must not engage in Yin-Yang intercourse. Until a man reaches an age of decline where ejaculation is forbidden, he must abstain from emitting essence.
It also records: Cui Shi (courtesy name Zizhen) of Anping, in his *Simin Yueling* (Monthly Ordinances for the People), stated: In May, the middle of summer, upon the arrival of the solstice, Yin and Yang contend, and blood and qi scatter. Five days before and after the solstice, men and women should sleep separately in inner and outer quarters (the Monthly Ordinances note this refers to the 'Shang' tone). In November, the middle of winter, upon the arrival of the solstice, Yin and Yang contend, and blood and qi scatter. Five days before and after the solstice, men and women should sleep separately in inner and outer quarters.
It also records: Intercourse is especially prohibited when drunk or full; this is a major taboo that damages the body. Damaging the body a hundredfold more than intercourse while drunk may lead to malignant sores or rebellious Qi. Holding urine during intercourse can cause Lin syndrome (dysuria); difficulty urinating, stabbing pain in the urethra, and a hard, distended lower abdomen may occur. One must not engage in intercourse after great anger or joy, as it may trigger carbuncles and sores.
It also records: Master Bu said: If intercourse occurs before a woman's menstrual flow has completely ceased, illness results. After childbirth, a woman may develop red patches on her face like a handprint, or lesions distributed over the body. Men may contract Baibo disease (vitiligo). (Also said: Do not have sex when drunk; do not get drunk after having sex; do not have sex when full; do not have sex after eating until full; do not have sex when exhausted; do not have sex after exertion; do not have sex when hungry; do not have sex after fasting.)
Dongxuanzi said: If a man's age is double a woman's, it harms the woman; if a woman's age is double a man's, it harms the man.
It also records: The *Sunü Lun* (Discourse of the White Lady) states: On the 16th day of the fifth month, Heaven and Earth are Yin (female). On Yin days, sexual intercourse is prohibited; doing so will result in death within three years. How do we know this? Take one chi of new cloth...
It also records: The timing and direction of intercourse determine auspiciousness. Beneficial or harmful effects depend on following the seasons. Following this brings great auspiciousness.
In early Spring, face East; in early Summer, face South; in early Autumn, face West; in early Winter, face North.
Yang days increase vitality (odd numbers are Yang); Yin days decrease vitality (even numbers are Yin). Yang hours increase vitality (after Zi hour until noon is Yang); Yin hours decrease vitality (after Wu hour until Zi hour is Yin).
Spring: Jia and Yi; Summer: Bing and Ding; Autumn: Geng and Xin; Winter: Ren and Gui.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) records: In April and October, one must not enter the bedchamber (months when Yin and Yang cannot function properly).
It also records: Do not enter the bedchamber at sunrise or sunset.
It also records: After new labor/exertion, one must bathe before sexual activity; without bathing, one must not engage in sexual activity.
It also records: For those who have just recovered from febrile diseases, or have not yet passed one hundred days since a major illness, if their strength has not recovered and they engage in sexual activity, almost none survive. Engaging in sex during a febrile disease is called "Yin-Yang Disease," and all...
Immediately present with acute lower abdominal pain and convulsed limbs, leading to death.
The treatment method: Take the part of a woman's garment with hair attached, burn it, and take one cun bi (a small spoonful measure) of the ash, three times daily. For women's illnesses, take a man's garment and follow this method. (Note: Ge Shi Fang records: Obtain a virgin girl...)
Another prescription: Take the garment of the woman with whom intercourse occurred, cover the man with it, and let him eat for the duration of one meal.
