This is also a formula widely used for promoting fertility.
The union of male and female essence allows for conception. However, essence is generated by the five zang organs and stored in the kidney. Therefore, to ensure sufficient essence stored in the kidney, one must regulate the five zang organs; when the five zang organs are vigorous, essence will be produced. In this formula, Renshen (Ginseng Root), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Tianmendong (Asphodelus Root), and Maimendong (Liriope Root) are herbs that tonify the lung. Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), Baiziren (Biota Seed), Suanzaoren (Ziziphus Seed), and ShengDihuang (Rehmannia Root) are herbs that tonify the heart. Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Fuling (Poria), Shanyao (Chinese Yam Rhizome), and Shihu (Dendrobium Stem) tonify the spleen and stomach. ShuDihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Gouqizi (Goji Berry), Tusizi (Dodder Seed), Baji (Morinda Root), Niuxi (Cyathula Root), Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit), RouCongRong (Cistanche Stem), and Shayuan Jili (Astragalus Complanatus Seed) tonify the liver and kidney. LuJiaoJiao (Deer Antler Glue) belongs to the category of qi and blood tonics; it is used to promote the generation of essence. LuJiaoShuang (Deer Antler Powder) and Lianxu (Lotus Stamens) are astringent substances; they are used to secure and prevent the leakage of essence. In this way, the five zang organs are all nourished, essence is generated daily, and successful intercourse leading to offspring becomes possible.
These six items (referring to heat-clearing and damp-draining herbs such as Huangqin, Huanglian, Huangbai, Zhizi mentioned later) are of a damp-heat nature. Why are they chosen? Most people who have difficulty conceiving suffer from deficiency in the lower jiao, while dampness from the stomach invades internally, causing internal blockage diseases such as Bao Bi (uterine obstruction), Shen Bi (kidney channel obstruction), and Bai Zhu (white turbidity). This results in cold essence and infertility. If these few herbs are used judiciously, the bi obstruction will be removed, and fertility will be facilitated.
People generally believe that those with cold essence cannot conceive and advocate using acrid-warm agents as the primary treatment. This view is rigid and inflexible. The harmony of heaven and earth promotes the development of all things. In the northern regions, where cold prevails, vegetation indeed fails to grow. In the southern regions, where heat steams, the soil also becomes scorched. To understand that cold essence causes infertility but remain ignorant that dry blood prevents conception indicates that one is not a skilled physician. Therefore, the discussion of Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, *Scutellariae Radix*) and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*...
