Cinnabar (Wu Qian, processed by water levigation, ground separately) Coptidis Rhizoma (Jiedixie, Liu Qian) Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Yi Qian Wu Fen) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Ge Er Qian Wu Fen)
This formula is indicated for patients suffering from palpitations and fright during dreams, accompanied by an unsettled mind.
Palpitations and fright during dreams are caused by deficiency of Heart Blood with invasion of Fire. In this formula, the heavy nature of Cinnabar can calm the Spirit; the bitter nature of Coptidis Rhizoma can drain Fire; the cool nature of Rehmanniae Radix Recens can clear Heat; the acrid nature of Angelicae Sinensis Radix can nourish Blood. As for Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, on one hand it can alleviate the blazing flames, and on the other hand it can tonify Qi to generate the Spirit.
To treat strange dreams and frequent fright, there are two additional methods: one is to wear a gauze bag containing coarse Ling Sha (refined cinnabar) in the hair bun; the other is to place a sachet of genuine Moschus (Musk) in the pillow. Both can prevent strange dreams and treat night terrors.
Poria Cum Pinodia (Bai Fushen) (Liang Er) Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang) (Wu Qian)
This formula is indicated for patients suffering from palpitations and anxiety due to fright.
When obtained through fright, it is named "Jing Qi Zheng Chong" (Palpitations and Anxiety due to Fright Qi). The *Neijing* states: "Fright causes Qi to become chaotic." Hence, the patient experiences palpitations and anxiety as if something were striking them. In this formula, the sweet and neutral nature of Poria Cum Pinodia (Bai Fushen) can calm the Heart; the solid and dense nature of Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum can direct Qi downward. When Qi descends, the palpitations and anxiety will subside.
Take approximately one spoonful per dose.
This formula is indicated for patients whose fright Qi has entered the Heart, resulting in aphonia and inability to speak.
There was a person chopping wood in the mountains who was chased by a wild wolf, leading to aphonia and inability to speak. A physician prescribed this formula, administered with tea, and he recovered soon after. Another soldier collecting vines in a valley encountered a venomous snake, rushed home, and presented identical symptoms. He was given this formula and also recovered. This is because the substance is heavy and drying; its heaviness allows it to anchor the Heart, and its dryness allows it to dispel Phlegm caused by fright.
Preface: If one takes emptiness and nirvana as the principle, one will not forget but learn to forget. If one keeps family, country, and the world in mind, one will maintain memory and fear forgetting. A gentleman bears the responsibility for governing the world and the state; how can he forget? This is why formulas for treating amnesia must be carefully examined.
Ginseng Radix Astragali Membranacei Radix Longan Aril Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Poria Coicis Seed Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Polygalae Radix (Ge Yi Qian) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle Aucklandiae Radix Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Ge Wu Fen)
This formula is indicated for patients suffering from amnesia due to excessive thinking and fatigue damaging the Heart and Spleen.
The Heart stores the Spirit (Shen), and the Spleen stores Intention (Yi). Excessive thinking damages the Heart and Spleen, leading to deficiency of Shen and Yi, which results in amnesia. In this formula, Ginseng Radix, Astragali Membranacei Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Poria, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle are sweet and warm substances that can tonify the Spleen. Longan Aril, Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, Polygalae Radix, and Angelicae Sinensis Radix are moistening substances that can nourish the Heart. Drying properties enter the Heart, and aromatic properties awaken the Spleen. Thus, the aromatic and drying nature of Aucklandiae Radix can regulate Qi between the Heart and Spleen. If the Heart and Spleen are regulated, how could there still be cases of amnesia? For pill preparations, they are suitable for inclusion in the Tianwang Buxin Dan section under Deficiency and Consumption Diseases.
