Preface: Palpitations and fright (Jing Ji Zheng Chong) are diseases of the Heart. The Heart is the master of the whole body and the source of all transformations. If left untreated, the twelve zang-fu organs will successively lose their functions.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali), Baifuling (Poria with Hostwood), Fushen (Poria with Pine Root), Banxiaqu (Fermented Pinellia Paste), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) (each 1.5 liang); Baiziren (Semen Platycladi), Suanzaoren (Fructus Ziziphi Spinosae, stir-fried), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae, heart removed, stir-fried with ginger juice), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Lagui (Cortex Cinnamomi) (each 0.83 liang); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried) (4 qian).
Take 5 qian per dose.
For cases where Heart blood deficiency leads to a lack of tranquility in Shen spirit, causing palpitations and fright, this formula is indicated.
The Heart governs blood and houses the Shen spirit; thus, its palace, known as the Lingtai, is called the Chamber of Spirit. When the Chamber of Spirit lacks blood and becomes empty, pathogenic factors invade it, causing one to feel as if startled, with a persistent sense of unease and palpitations. The *Neijing* states: "When Yang qi is pure, it nourishes the Shen." Therefore, Renshen, Huangqi, Fushen, Baifuling, and Gancao are used to tonify Qi. It also states: "Stillness allows the Shen to be stored; dryness causes it to perish." Therefore, Danggui, Yuanzhi, Baiziren, Suanzaoren, and Wuweizi are used to moisten dryness. Tonifying Qi nourishes the Shen, and moistening dryness nourishes the Blood. As for Chuanxiong, it regulates the Liver to benefit the Mother of the Heart (Wood generates Fire, so the Liver is the Mother of the Heart). Banxiaqu awakens the Spleen to benefit the Child of the Heart (Fire generates Earth, so the Spleen is the Child of the Heart). Lagui is acrid and hot, conforming to the nature of Fire. The *Yijing* says: "Fire tends toward dryness," thus it can guide other herbs directly to the Monarch of the Heart to tonify it; this is referred to in the classics as "conforming treatment" (Cong Zhi). Some add Binglang (Arecae Semen) and Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Hostwood) because water retention causes palpitations; these are added to guide and drain water qi. For those without water retention, this modification is not used.
Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Baifuling (Poria with Hostwood), Baifushen (Poria with Pine Root), Suanzaoren (Fructus Ziziphi Spinosae, soaked in wine for half a day, stir-fried between papers), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae), Baiziren (Semen Platycladi), Hupo (Electrum) (each 1.5 liang); Ruxiang (Resina Olibani), Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (each 0.83 qian).
Make pills with honey, sized like wutong seeds. Take 30 pills per dose.
For cases of Qi and Blood deficiency resulting in frequent fright in dreams, this formula is indicated.
Heavy substances dispel timidity, hence Zhusha is used. Clarity calms the Shen, hence Hupo is used. Fragrance opens orifices, hence Ruxiang and Shichangpu are used. Qi generates Shen, hence Renshen, Fuling, and Fushen are used. Seeds/nuts return to the Heart, hence Baiziren and Suanzaoren are used. Sour flavors promote fluid nourishment, hence Yuanzhi is used. Moistening benefits blood, hence Danggui is used.
