Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, processed with wine) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, processed with wine, equal parts)
Grind both herbs into fine powder and make pills. Take one hundred pills on an empty stomach with salted water.
This is also a formula for treating blurred vision caused by Kidney deficiency.
The eyes are the orifice of the Liver. The Liver belongs to the Wood element; it thrives when nourished by Water but withers when deprived of Water. Therefore, Huangbai and Zhimu, which have strong flavors, are used to nourish Kidney Water. This follows the principle of "tonifying the mother when there is deficiency." Although this formula is said to tonify the Kidney, it also belongs to the category of purging methods. It is suitable for patients with strong Spleen and Stomach function but blurred vision. It is not suitable for those with damaged Spleen and Stomach.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian) Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, body part) Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix, processed with wine, 5 qian each) Gan Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 8 qian) Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, washed with wine, 1.5 qian) Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed) Digupi (Lycii Cortex) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, stir-baked with bran) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, processed with wine) Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, 3 qian each)
When blood deficiency fails to nourish the Heart, causing excessive Heart Fire, the Liver Wood becomes excess. Symptoms include dilated pupils and unclear vision. This formula is indicated for such conditions.
The Liver is the mother of the Heart. Excessive Heart Fire causes Liver Wood to become excess. The Liver governs Wind, and the Heart governs Fire. Dilated pupils are a sign of wind and fire agitation. The pupil's function is to reflect objects; now that it is dilated, vision naturally becomes unclear. Yue Ren (Bian Que) stated: "Purge the child when in excess, tonify the mother when deficient." Fire is the child of Liver Wood; therefore, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), and Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) are used to purge fire. Water is the mother of Liver Wood; therefore, Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) are used to nourish water. The *Neijing* states: "Yang qi, in its refined aspect, nourishes the spirit." Therefore, Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are used to benefit Yang qi. Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) is used to break stagnation. Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) is used to ascend clear Yang. When clear Yang ascends, the eyes become bright. The classics state: "The eyes can see only when they receive blood." Therefore, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) is added as an assistant.
Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian, bark removed) Zhi mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, stir-fried) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine) Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, washed with wine) Baifuling (Poria, white) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3 qian each) Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, processed with wine) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang each) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 liang)
This formula is indicated for green or white nebulae (opacities) in the eyes.
When Yang cannot overcome Yin, eye nebulae arise. This is described as Yin excess and Yang deficiency, leading to blockage of the nine orifices, resembling dark clouds obscuring the sun. In this formula, Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria, white), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) are sweet-warm Qi-tonifying agents, thus serving to tonify Yang. Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) are pungent-warm agents that disperse nebulae, also serving to tonify Yang. Zhi mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) are said to nourish Yin, but their purpose is to assist Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Chaihu, and Duhuo, preventing them from dispersing true Yang. Thus, this also serves to tonify Yang. Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) is used for its pungent-hot nature. Heat is the image of Fire, which can disperse Yin nebulae. Pungency is the flavor of Metal, which can pacify Liver Wood. Since the eyes are the orifice of Liver Wood, Rougui is employed.
