Hemp Seed (Semen Cannabis, Mahuangzi) [Note: Text says Mahan Ren, usually Hemp Seed/Cannabis Seed in this context, distinct from Ephedra] (4 sheng)
Boil with six sheng of water until reduced to seven he. Take on an empty stomach.
For patients suffering from Dian Feng (Epilepsy/Mental Disorder), administer this formula; efficacy is expected after three doses.
Hemp Seed is a moistening herb. Excessive intake promotes bowel movement and urination, thereby sufficient to purge the pathogenic factors of Dian Feng. However, it can nourish Heart Fire, moisten the Liver, and lubricate the Spleen...
Sophora Root (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, Kushen) alone, ground into powder, formed into pills the size of wutong seeds. Each dose consists of fifteen pills, taken down with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction).
For mania occurring without fixed timing, characterized by disheveled hair, loud screaming, desire to kill, and disregard for fire and water, this formula is indicated.
The aforementioned syndromes are all caused by internal disturbance of the Shen (Spirit). Hence, ancient physicians referred to mania as "Shi Xin" (Loss of Heart/Mind). Sophora Root treats knotting qi in the heart and abdomen, thus sufficient to treat manic speech caused by seasonal heat.
Yellow Emperor asked: There are patients who become angry and manic. How does this disease arise? Qibo replied: It arises from Yang. The Emperor said: Why does Yang cause mania? Qibo said: When Yang Qi suffers sudden frustration and cannot be resolved, one becomes prone to anger. This disease is named Yang Jue (Yang Reversal). The Emperor said: How do we know this? Qibo said: The Yangming pulse is usually pulsating, while the Taiyang and Shaoyang pulses are usually not. If the non-pulsating ones exhibit rapid and strong pulsation, this is the sign. How to treat it? Qibo said: Depriving them of food will cure it. Food enters Yin and generates Qi in Yang; thus, depriving food cures it. Administer Sheng Tie Luo Yin (Raw Iron Filings Decoction) for them. Raw Iron Filings have the property of rapidly descending rebellious Qi. Wu Kun states that Anger is the emotion of Liver Wood. Iron Filings are of the Metal nature. When Wood Qi desires to become excessive, Metal should level it; this is why Iron Filings are used.
Cinnabar (1 liang, selected for brightness and wall-like structure) [Zhu Sha, Zhusha]
Sour Jujube Seed (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, Suanzaoren) (0.5 liang, slightly stir-fried)
Frankincense (Resina Olibani, Ruxiang) (0.5 liang, selected for luster and clarity)
For patients with Dian Ji (Epilepsy/Manic Disorder) and Shi Xin (Loss of Mind), grind these three herbs into powder, mix together as a single dose, and take down with warm wine. For those who drink well, aim for intoxication; do not allow vomiting. After taking the medicine, immediately arrange bed and pillow for sleep. For mild cases, awakening occurs within half a day to one day; for severe cases, within two to three days. Observers should watch secretly and must not startle or touch the patient to wake them; wait...
Monk Yunhui of Xiangguo Temple in the Tang Dynasty suffered from Dian Ji and Shi Xin for half a year. He tried various famous doctors' medicines without effect. His lay brother, Mr. Pan, was wealthy and invited Sun Simiao to treat him. Sun said: Let him sleep tonight, and he will recover by tomorrow or the next day. Pan said: Just tell me the medication, and I will never forget your kindness. Sun said: Provide salty food for the monk to eat. Come back when the wine is finished. At midnight, the monk indeed felt thirsty. Sun arrived, requested a cup of warm wine, mixed one dose of medicine, and gave it to him. Shortly after, the monk asked for more wine, and Sun gave him half a cup. The monk then slept for two days and nights before waking up, with his mental state restored. Pan thanked Sun and asked about the treatment method. Sun said: Others can calm the Shen, but cannot induce deep sleep through Shen depression. This is precisely the Zhusha Suanzaoren Ruxiang San (Cinnabar, Sour Jujube Seed, and Frankincense Powder) from Lingyuan Fang, which people fail to use correctly. Wu Gong Zhengsu took one dose of this formula for his childhood Heart Disease, woke up after five days, and was cured.
Ben Shi Fang adds one liang of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma Rubra (Ren Shen) to this formula, naming it Ning Zhi Gao (Peaceful Spirit Paste), made into pills the size of bullet shots using refined honey. Each dose is one pill, dissolved and taken with Mint Decoction. Master Lou said: A clan member lost their mind due to war and fire. I prepared this formula for him. After taking twenty pills, he recovered. Relatives and friends widely transmitted it, and all applications were effective. Wu Kun states that heaviness can dispel timidity, so Cinnabar can anchor the Heart and calm the Spirit. Sourness can astringe and draw inward, so Sour Jujube Seed can gather the Spirit back to the Heart. Aroma can open orifices, so Frankincense can broaden the Heart's Will. Using wine to mix and drinking until drunk aims to facilitate the action of the medicinal power to achieve great efficacy. Scholar Xu added Ginseng because he believed Ginseng can pacify the Heart.
