Phlegm pathogens cause the most severe diseases, and phlegm disorders are also numerous. The accumulation of dampness and stagnant fire are the two major sources for generating phlegm. Others may arise due to wind, cold, qi stagnation, or food retention, manifesting in myriad bizarre ways, arising with different pathogenic factors, making it difficult to enumerate them all. The general principles for treating phlegm are: for dampness, drying is appropriate; for fire, clearing is appropriate; for wind, dispersing is appropriate; for cold, warming is appropriate; for qi stagnation, smoothing is appropriate; for food retention, resolving is appropriate. Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) is the primary formula for treating phlegm because it has the functions of resolving phlegm, regulating qi, strengthening the spleen, and harmonizing the stomach. Students should modify the prescription according to symptoms and apply treatment based on the disease, so that its application will be inexhaustible.
