Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Sheng Ma (Ephedrae Herba? No, Cimicifugae Rhizoma), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are taken in equal parts.
Xuan Shen clears the floating fire of the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner); Sheng Ma raises Yang and resolves toxicity; Gan Cao clears heat and resolves toxicity. The prescription consists of only three herbs, simple yet effective in reaching the disease site.
Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Decoct with fresh ginger slices (Sheng Jiang) and Chinese jujube fruits (Da Zao).
It has potent effects in eliminating toxins and resolving macules. If excess fire is blazing, the dosages of Sheng Di Huang and Ren Shen should be酌情 reduced according to circumstances.
Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Guan Zhong (Cyathullae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shan Dou Gen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Hua Shi (Talcum, 5 qian), Peng Sha (Borax), and Han Shui Shi (Calcitum, 3 qian).
Grind into fine powder. For each dose, take one qian, place it on the tongue first, and slowly swallow with clear water.
This is a heavy-duty formula for treating excess fire and excess phlegm. It must absolutely not be used if deficiency fire gathers in the throat causing obstruction and blockage.
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), 20 liang (stir-fried together with Wu Zhu Yu, 10 liang, then discard Wu Zhu Yu and use only Huang Lian); Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), 4 liang 8 qian.
Make pills using vinegar paste, and administer with rice drink.
Tenesmus (urgency with incomplete evacuation) indicates blocked Qi mechanism; this also employs the method of bitter descent and pungent ascent.
Bai Tou Weng (Pulsatillae Radix), 2 liang; Qin Pi (Fraxini Cortex); Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma); Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), 3 liang.
Xiang Lian Wan treats tenesmus caused by Qi mechanism blockage; this formula treats tenesmus caused by heat damaging Ying and Blood levels. Therefore, it uses only clearing and descending methods without employing Qi-regulating herbs.
Ci Shi (Magnetitum, red variety); Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, boiled in salt water); Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), 5 liang; Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber); Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), 4 liang; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), 1 liang; Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix).
[Note: Text implies adding] Juice, Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), 15 pieces.
Divide into three doses.
It possesses cold-clearing and heavy-settling properties to consolidate Yin and subdue fire, combined with strengthening Spleen and harmonizing Stomach functions; thus, it acts like a disciplined army (a well-structured prescription).
Xin Yi (Magnoliae Flos), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Grind into equal parts fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, administered with tea infusion.
The pungent dispersing action is too strong; it is suitable for dispelling wind and scattering cold, but does not belong to the methods of the Fire-Resolving School.
Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), 1 liang; Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba); Xin Yi (Magnoliae Flos), 5 liang; Cang Er Zi (Xanthii Fructus, stir-fried), 2.5 qian.
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian before meals, mixed with scallion and tea water.
Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis/Discharge) can be caused by fire scorching, wind attacking, or cold invading, among other factors. This formula is applicable only to cases caused by wind attack; it also does not belong to the methods of the Fire-Resolving School.
