In general, among the ways of medicine, none is more difficult than pediatrics. For if an infant falls ill suddenly, one cannot diagnose by pulse-taking nor inquire by speech; one must rely on observing the complexion and listening to the voice to discern the origin of the disease, which is also difficult. If a newborn has received strong prenatal essence (Taiyuan), diseases will be few; if weak and unprotected, various illnesses may arise. Whether due to fright, dietary injury, or exposure to wind-cold, all can cause disease. Without clear understanding of medical principles, how can one distinguish them? Even a slight error can cause significant harm. Practitioners must treat based on clear syndromes.
