The pathogenesis of Damp-Warmth disease involves a patient who is constitutionally injured by dampness and subsequently suffers from summerheat. The collision of dampness and heat constitutes Damp-Warmth. Symptoms include chest fullness, headache, high fever, delirium, profuse sweating on the body, and coldness in the lower legs and shins.
It is appropriate to use Bai Hu Jia Cang Zhu Tang (White Tiger plus Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction).
If the patient with Damp-Warmth disease has deficiency and slipping of the Zang-Fu organs without heat symptoms, it is appropriate to use Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) added with Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Fu Ling (Poria).
Bai Hu Jia Cang Zhu Tang: See formula in "Cold Gate" chapter, only adding Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma).
Li Zhong Tang: See formula in "Middle Cold Gate" chapter.
Wind-Dampness disease arises from first being injured by dampness and then by wind. Its symptoms include swelling and pain in the limbs, difficulty in movement, and exacerbation in the late afternoon (Shen hour). Treatment should aim at mild release of the exterior; violent diaphoresis is contraindicated. If violent sweating occurs, the wind pathogen leaves but the damp pathogen remains. The Classics state: Yang meridians receive wind pathogens, Yin meridians receive damp pathogens. Those injured by wind are affected first in the upper part; those injured by dampness are affected first in the lower part. When wind and dampness collide, wind is external and dampness is internal. Profuse sweating causes a sudden depletion of Qi; although external pathogens exit, internal pathogens cannot exit, so wind leaves while dampness remains. If sweating is mild, Qi moves slowly, allowing both internal and external pathogens to exit, thus eliminating both wind and dampness.
Ma Huang Xing Zi Yi Yi Ren Gan Cao Tang (Ephedra, Apricot Seed, Coix Seed, and Licorice Decoction) treats body swelling and pain caused by Wind-Dampness, as well as cases where wind pathogen has left but dampness remains after sweating therapy. This prescription is indicated.
