(From *Qianjin Fang*)
Treats food stagnation in the stomach and intestines, imbalance of cold and heat, leading to abdominal distension, urgency of qi, painful fullness, and even death-like suffering; as well as sudden attacks from evil influences or hostile qi, and various acute diseases.
*Radix Badiaris Preparata* (Babao Shuang), *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* (Dahuang), *Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum* (Ganjiang) in equal parts. Made into pills with honey, size of small beans. Take 2-3 pills per dose. For those with locked jaws due to evil influence, pry open the teeth and administer. Cui Shi replaced Ganjiang with *Ramulus Cinnamomi* (Guizhi), naming it Beiji San.
These are medicines for the Hand and Foot Yangming meridians. *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* is bitter and cold, used to purge heat accumulation; Babao Shuang is acrid and hot, used to purge cold accumulation; adding *Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum* which is acrid and dispersing to promote circulation. (*Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum* is acrid...)
(From *Ben Shi Fang*)
Treats all kinds of accumulations and phlegm-fluids, with pain radiating from the heart and hypochondrium.
*Amygdalus Communis* (Sharen), *Fructus Crotonis Tiglii* (Badou, de-oiled), *Rhizoma Sparganii* (Sanleng), *Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum* (Ganjiang), *Radix Angelicae Dahuricae* (Baizhi) (each 5 qian), *Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma* (Muxiang), *Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride* (Qingpi), *Fructus Piperis Nigris* (Hujiao) (2.5 qian), *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* (Dahuang).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder... make into pills.
This is a general formula for treating meat accumulation, qi accumulation, and blood accumulation. *Amygdalus Communis* can digest meat. *Amygdalus Communis* is greatly hot in nature, capable of corroding metals; Materia Medica states it can transform human heart into blood... (*Text missing here*).
*Nux Arecae* (Roukou)... (*Text missing here*).
Mostly acrid... (*Text missing here*).
Not overly harsh. The use of vinegar is to utilize its sour property to astringe. (*Yu Ji Wei Yi* says: Because Baizhi in the formula disperses water and moves qi, it further emphasizes the treatment of phlegm-fluids. Jiegu said: Strong people do not have accumulations, only weak people do; this is due to weakness of the spleen and stomach. With decline of both qi and blood, feeling external pathogens in any season can lead to accumulations. If one immediately uses drugs that grind hardness and break knots, the disease may seem gone but the person becomes depleted. Drugs like *Radix Euphorbiae Lathyris Preparata* (Ganqi), *Amygdalus Communis* (Sharen), *Rhizoma Sparganii* (Sanleng), *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* (Dahuang), *Semen Pharbitidis* (Qianniu) provide temporary relief during medication, but after the drug effect wears off... like fullness...)
(Zhang Zihe)
Treats chest and abdominal stagnations, stuffiness, fullness, knotting, and pain; obstruction of urination and defecation; or diarrhea, dysentery with tenesmus, and real accumulation from food malaria (chest/abdominal stuffiness/fullness/dysentery, due to drinking... there is cause... object knot... treatment. Pulse is large and forceful indicating interior excess, suitable for purging; if pulse is floating and large, absolutely do not purge).
*Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma* (Muxiang), *Areca Seed* (Binglang), *Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride* (Qingpi, stir-fried with vinegar), *Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae* (Chenpi, remove white pith), *Fructus Aurantii* (Zhiqiao, stir-fried), *Cortex Phellodendri Amurensis* (Huangbai, stir-fried with wine), *Coptis Chinensis Rhizoma* (Huanglian, stir-fried with Evodia Decoction), *Rhizoma Sparganii* (Sanleng)... *Natrii Sulfas* (Mangxiao) water-pellets. Adjust dosage according to the patient... *Zhu* book lacks Sanleng and Chenpi, named Muxiang Daoqi Wan).
These are medicines for the Hand and Foot Yangming meridians. Damp-heat in the Qi aspect of the Triple Burner. *Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma* and *Cyperi Rhizoma* (Xiangfu) are qi-moving medicines, capable of unblocking the Triple Burner and resolving six depressions; *Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae* regulates Lung qi in the Upper Burner, *Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride* pacifies Liver qi in the Lower Burner (dysentery often results from Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth), *Fructus Aurantii* widens the intestines and benefits qi, while *Semen Pharbitidis* (Heiqiu) and *Areca Seed* are the fastest in descending qi. When qi moves, there will be no worry of stuffiness and tenesmus. Malaria and dysentery are due to damp-heat stagnation and disharmony of qi and blood. *Cortex Phellodendri Amurensis* and *Coptis Chinensis Rhizoma* are drying-dampness and clearing-heat medicines. *Rhizoma Sparganii* breaks qi stagnation in blood; *Rhizoma Curcumae* (Ezhu) breaks blood stagnation in qi. *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma* and *Natrii Sulfas* are blood-level medicines, capable of removing latent heat in blood, promoting circulation of stagnations, and serving as harsh products for breaking hardness and dissolving masses. Once damp-heat and stagnation are removed, urination and defecation become regulated, and the Triple Burner becomes smooth. Generally, if old filth is not clean, clear Yang cannot rise; thus, these must be borrowed to push and荡 (purge) it. This is also the meaning of "treating obstruction with draining methods" (Tong Yin Tong Yong). However, if it is not a solid accumulation, do not lightly administer. Adding *Radix Angelicae Sinensis* (Danggui) moistens dryness to harmonize blood. (*Compendium of Materia Medica* says: This is Dairen's empirical formula. Good at treating deficiency below and excess above, suppressing fire rising and water descending, flowing moisture to dryness, pushing out the old and generating the new, dissipating depression and breaking knots, invigorating blood and unblocking collaterals, as well as lung wasting with wheezing/cough, chest/diaphragm discomfort, spleen dampness with jaundice, undigested food, harmonizing qi and blood in women, and pediatric fright/accumulation with heat. All can be used according to severity. Hua Borren said: Intestines and stomach belong to Yangming Dry Metal; Lower Burner belongs to Shaoyang Ministerial Fire. The use of *Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma* and *Areca Seed* for tenesmus...)
