Treats liver fire stagnation and heat, leading to inability to sleep easily, frequent fright, irritability, flaccidity of sinews with inability to rise, and red, swollen, and painful eyes. (The Liver belongs to Wind-Wood; when Wood is excessive, it generates Fire, thus causing fever, restlessness in sleep, and internal Wind.)
Longdan Cao (Radix Gentianae), Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried until black), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, steamed with wine), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed with wine), Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), in equal parts. Make into honey pills. Take with Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf) decoction.
These are herbs for the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. The Liver is called the "General Officer." When Wind is rampant and Fire is blazing, it is not easy to calm it down. Longdan Cao and Dahuang are bitter, cold, and have strong flavors, with a sinking nature... [Text gap/error in original].
Small doses can nourish Liver Blood and moisten Liver Dryness (Blood deficiency leads to Liver Dryness; Liver Dryness leads to irritability and fright). These herbs are also Qi-moving agents within the Blood category; their pungency can disperse, and their warmth can harmonize, thereby assisting in nurturing the Liver substance. Through one method of purging, one of dispersing, and one of tonifying, they collectively act as agents to pacify the Liver, hence named "Xieqing Wan" (Drain Green Pill). Among the Five Zang Organs, only the Liver is often in excess (hyperactive). Dispersing its stagnation is equivalent to tonifying it, because Wood likes to be free-flowing and unobstructed. However, this formula should only be used for individuals who are robust. (Yu Zirong stated: Contemporary physicians often adhere rigidly to the theory that "the Liver is often in excess," and immediately prescribe liver-pacifying methods upon seeing any symptom. Note: *Shengji Jing* states: Investigating the transformations of the four seasons begins with Wood; investigating the nourishment of the twelve meridians begins with Spring. In the first month of pregnancy, the Jueyin Liver Meridian nourishes the fetus. The Liver is the beginning of the stirring of Spring Yang and the source of the generation and transformation of all things. Therefore, one must guard against anger to preserve Yang Qi, allowing the congenital Qi to generate endlessly without cessation. This is a crucial aspect of health preservation and should not be interpreted rigidly based on previous theories. Wang Ang notes: This theory originates from the *Neijing*. The *Suwen: Liujie Zangxiang Lun* states: Regarding the victory of the Five Elements and Four Seasons, each organ is named according to its Qi, seeking its controlling relationships, all returning to early Spring. Spring belongs to Liver-Wood, which is the ascending and generating Qi of our body. If this Qi is insufficient, what will the other four Zang organs rely upon? If Spring has no generation, what will there be for Summer's growth, Autumn's harvest, and Winter's storage? Among the Five Elements, only Wood exhibits the image of flourishing and thriving; Water, Fire, Metal, and Earth do not possess such characteristics. Flowers, leaves, and grasses are lush, beautiful, and lovely; bearing fruit and seeds, consuming them preserves life—all are manifestations of this Wood Qi. If Heaven and Earth lacked Wood, the world would be dim and colorless. From this perspective, nurturing and nourishing [Wood] is still feared to be insufficient; how could one think of pruning or felling it? Therefore, nourishing Blood and harmonizing the Liver prevents Fire from flaming upward. Then Heart Qi becomes peaceful, and the entire body is regulated. This is not only an essential path for health preservation but also a critical task for cultivating virtue. Wang Ang further notes: Physicians often claim that the Liver has only draining methods and no tonifying methods. They fail to realize that formulas such as Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) and Qibao Meiran Dan (Seven-Treasure Beautiful Beard Pill) are indeed tonics for the Liver; people are simply accustomed to this view without examining it closely. *Waitai Miyao* states: The Five Elements and Five Zang Organs mutually generate each other. Although the Liver is positioned centrally, it is the head of the Zang organs, located at Jia and Yi (Heavenly Stems associated with Wood), harboring nurturing and benevolent qualities, thus corresponding to Spring and generation. The Liver is the mother of the Heart; the other Zang organs follow in sequence of generation. The Heart is the master, governing Shen (Spirit); the other four Zang organs are like the border regions. If the border regions have worry, the Master necessarily shares the worry; if the border regions are peaceful, the Master feels joy. Joy ensures correct circulation of Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) Qi; worry causes meridian pathology. The Heart does not accept external pathogens; the diseases caused are solely due to worry or joy. The Lung is the residence of Wind and the gate of respiration. When the Zang organs are chaotic, breath manifests form. Who can exit without passing through the door? If Wind-Heat is excessive and the Heart worries, headache occurs; excessive worry causes heart vexation. Extreme Cold inevitably leads to Heat; extreme Heat inevitably leads to Cold. This is the principle of interdependence and transformation. By merely calming Wind-Heat and suppressing maniacal evil, Ying and Wei Qi will naturally..." [Text ends abruptly]
