Treats accumulation of heat in the Stomach, causing pain in the upper and lower teeth, radiating to the head, with a hot sensation over the entire face; the teeth prefer cold and dislike heat; or gingival ulceration, or bleeding from the gums (also known as tooth gushing), or swelling and pain of the lips, mouth, cheeks, and parotid region. (The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian circulates along the lateral side of the nose, enters the upper teeth, surrounds the mouth, passes through Jiache [ST6], and ascends to the front of the ear, governing the upper gingiva; it prefers cold drinks and dislikes heat. The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian ascends the neck, penetrates the cheek, enters the lower teeth, surrounds the mouth, and governs the lower gingiva; it prefers hot drinks and dislikes cold. The divergent channel of the Foot-Yangming connects to the brain, hence brain pain; the Yangming meridians nourish the face, hence facial heat; when heat is excessive in these two meridians, diseases such as swelling and pain occur in the lips, mouth, teeth, and cheeks. Teeth are associated with bones and governed by the Kidney. Gingival bleeding or bleeding from the gum margins, also called Chi Nu (Tooth Epistaxis), is a Kidney disease. If blood flows profusely and does not stop, it is due to excessive heat in the Yangming, because the Yangming meridians are abundant in Qi and Blood. Lips belong to the Spleen, Stomach, and Large Intestine meridians; dryness causes cracking, heat causes fissures, wind causes twitching, and cold causes stiffness. If swelling, roughness, and cracking resemble mulberry silkworm cocoons, it is named Jian Chun (Cocoon Lip). Lips and tongue are the root of muscles; if the philtrum is flat and full, it is called Chun Fan (Lip Reversal), indicating that muscle tissue dies first.)
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). Another formula adds Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
These are herbs for the Foot-Yangming meridian. Huang Lian clears Heart Fire and also Spleen Fire; the Spleen is the child of the Heart and shares an interior-exterior relationship with the Stomach. Dang Gui harmonizes the blood; Sheng Di Huang cools the blood and clears heat; Mu Dan Pi clears deficient heat and cools the blood; Huang Lian clears Stomach fire and purges heat; Sheng Ma disperses stagnant fire. Together, they dissipate heat toxicity and relieve pain. (Xue Xinpu stated: For toothache caused by excess damp-heat, use Cheng Qi Tang; for mild cases, use Qing Wei San. For gum swelling and pain due to Large Intestine heat, use Qing Wei San; for severe cases, use Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang. For pain due to the Six Stagnations, use Yue Ju Wan. For pain due to deficiency of Middle Qi, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang. For pain due to worry injuring the Spleen, use Gui Pi Tang. For pain due to deficient heat in the Kidney meridian, use Liu Wei Di Huang Wan. For pain due to deficient cold in the Kidney meridian, use Hai Shao Dan; for severe cases, use Ba Wei Wan. For those belonging to Wind-Heat, use Du Huo San or Yin Chen San. For Cold-Wind invading the brain, use Qiang Huo Fu Zi Tang. Treatment should be adapted to the specific situation. Appendix: Du Huo San: Du Huo, Qiang Huo, Chuan Xiong, and Fang Feng each 5 qian; Xi Xin, Jing Jie, Bo He, and Sheng Di Huang each 2 qian. Take 3 qian per dose.)
