Treats damp-heat in the Stomach, bad breath, throat sores, receding gums, as well as hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), and bleeding from teeth. (The orifice of the Stomach is the mouth; its meridian ascends to the teeth and flanks the nose. When damp-heat is abundant internally, it causes bad breath and oral ulcers; when Yang-heat is constrained within the Stomach and overflows into the mouth and nose, it causes vomiting of blood and nosebleeds. Teeth belong to the Shaoyin Kidney meridian, while gums belong to the Yangming Stomach meridian. Heat in these two meridians causes bleeding from the teeth, gums, and interdental spaces, known as dental hemorrhage, or gum recession and exposure.)
Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Shudi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Tiantong Dong (Asparagi Radix), Maidong Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Pipa Ye (Eriobotryae Folium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), equal parts. Take five qian per dose. Another variant adds Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and Fuling (Poria), named Guiling Ganlu Yin (Cinnamon Twig and Poria Decoction). *Benshi Fang* adds Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), stating this is very reasonable (Xijiao cools the Heart and drains Liver heat, clearing intense heat in the Stomach.)
This formula acts on the Foot-Yangming Stomach meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian. Irritability and heat often belong to deficiency. The sweetness of Shengdi Huang, Shudi Huang, Tiantong Dong, Maidong Dong, Gancao, and Shihu treats deficiency-heat in the Kidney and Stomach; this method drains heat while tonifying. The bitter-cold nature of Yinchen and Huangqin subdues heat and removes dampness; since fire-heat tends to rise upward causing pathology, Zhike and Pipa Ye are used to suppress and descend the Qi.
Hejian's Guiling Ganlu Yin: Huashi (Talcum, four liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Hanshuishi (Natrii Sulfas), Gancao (each two liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) [text indicates constipation here, likely a formatting error in source, followed by commentary]: This is also a combined formula of Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) and Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder), used to clear heat in the Six Fu organs. Zhang Zihe removed Zhu Ling (Polyporus), reduced the three stone minerals by half, added Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (one liang each), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba) (five qian), and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (one fen). Take three qian per dose. Also called Guiling Ganlu Yin: Treats latent summerheat causing irritability and thirst, deficient pulse, and water rebellion (thirst desire... [text truncated]).
(From Qian Yi's *Xiao'er Yaozhengzhijue*)
Treats steaming heat in the skin caused by Lung fire, chills and fever with shivering, worsening particularly in the afternoon (specifically around the You hour). Skin steaming heat occurs because the Lung governs the skin and hair; chills and fever indicate pathogenic factors in the skin and interstices; worsening at the You hour corresponds to the peak of Metal energy; the Lung dislikes Qi rebelling upward, hence coughing and asthma; a pulse that is palpable with light pressure but disappears with heavy pressure indicates heat in the skin and hair; worsening in the late afternoon indicates Lung heat.
Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Gancao (five fen), Jingmi (Oryza Sativa, one hundred grains). Yilao (Li Dongyuan) adds Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
This formula acts on the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Sangbaipi is sweet to tonify insufficiency of Yuan Qi, and pungent to drain excess Lung Qi, eliminating phlegm (Antitussive herbs are good at promoting water metabolism and draining fire, thus eliminating phlegm; when phlegm is eliminated, cough stops;) Digupi is cold to drain hidden fire in the Lung, and bland to drain deficiency-heat in the Liver and Kidney, cooling blood and relieving steaming heat (Excess Liver Wood generates fire; excessive fire controls Metal; the Kidney is the son of the Lung, so excess conditions are treated by draining the son;) Gancao drains fire and tonifies the Spleen, Jingmi clears the Lung and tonifies the Stomach (Earth is the mother of Metal; when deficient, tonify the mother,) and helps expel heat through urination. The Lung belongs to the West, hence it is called Xiebai (Discharging White). (Li Shizhen said: This is the standard for all formulas treating the Lung. Xiebai San discharges fire in the Qi level of the Lung meridian; Huangqin Yiwu Tang and Danxi Qingjin Wan discharge fire in the Blood level of the Lung meridian. Qingjin Wan is made by frying Huangqin into powder and forming pills with water... [text truncated])
Adding Renshen, Wuweizi, Fuling, Qingpi, and Chenpi to this formula creates Jiajian Xiebai San (Modified Xiebai Decoction) (Li Dongyuan): Treats cough, asthma, and vomiting. Adding Zhimu, Huangqin, Jiegeng, Qingpi, and Chenpi also creates Jiajian Xiebai San (*Weisheng Baojian*): Treats cough with asthma, irritability, thirst, and chest/diaphragm discomfort. Removing Gancao and Jingmi, adding Huangqin, Zhimu, Maidong, Wuweizi, and Jiegeng also creates Jiajian Xiebai San (Luo Qianfu): Treats lung injury from excessive drinking, foul-smelling breath, thick sticky sputum and nasal discharge, throat obstruction, bitter taste, and dryness in the mouth (Original text states: Sangbaipi and Digupi are bitter and slightly cold, descending hidden fire in the Lung and tonifying Qi as the Sovereign herb; Huangqin and Zhimu are bitter and cold, treating foul breath and clearing Lung Qi as the Minister herbs; Wuweizi is sour and warm to astringe Lung Qi,...
