(Yan's) Qinghun San (Clear Soul Powder): Treats sudden fainting and loss of consciousness after childbirth, once the lochia (postpartum discharge) has ceased. This is due to deficiency of Qi and Blood in the postpartum period combined with an invasion of Wind pathogen.
Zelan Ye (Lycopus lucidus var. hirtus Leaf), Renshen (Ginseng Root) (3 fen), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (5 fen), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) (1 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) (3 fen). Grind into fine powder. Take with warm wine.
This formula acts on the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Since Qi and Blood are deficient, Chuanxiong and Zelan are used to nourish Blood, while Renshen and Gancao are used to tonify Qi; since there is an external invasion of Wind, Jingjie is used to disperse Wind. Once the Wind pathogen is expelled and Qi and Blood are regenerated, the Spirit becomes clear. The Liver stores the Hun (Ethereal Soul), hence it is called "Qinghun" (Clear Soul). (Jingjie is particularly effective at dispersing Wind within the Blood, thus serving as the principal herb.)
(Ji Yimu Cao Gao Wan / Motherwort Paste Pill, from *Chanbao*): Treats irregular menstruation, leukorrhea (red and white vaginal discharge), and all kinds of diseases during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Harvest the Motherwort plant (Yimu Cao) by the root when the flowers are in full bloom on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, the 6th day of the 6th lunar month, or on Minor Heat (Xiaoshu). Dry it in the shade. Use the flowers, leaves, and seeds, grind them into powder using a stone mortar.
If accompanied by alternating chills and fever, red face, vexation, epistaxis (nosebleed), black tongue, or dry mouth, take with child's urine and wine; for postpartum asthma and cough, nausea, vomiting of sour fluid, hypochondriac pain, and weakness, take with wine; for postpartum bloody diarrhea, take with jujube decoction; for postpartum dysentery, take with rice water; for postpartum metrorrhagia (profuse uterine bleeding), take with glutinous rice water; for postpartum leukorrhea, take with Jiao'ai Tang (Colla Corii Asini and Artemisia Decoction); for postpartum retention of urine and feces, irritability, and bitter taste in the mouth, take with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction). Generally, dissolving one pill in child's urine for postpartum conditions can calm the Hun and Po (Soul and Corporeal Soul), regulate the meridians, and resolve blood stasis pain. It regulates irregular menstruation and induces pregnancy in those who have been barren for a long time.
This formula acts on the Hand and Foot Jueyin Meridians. Motherwort excels at resolving edema, promoting blood circulation, eliminating stasis and generating new blood, and unblocking urination and defecation, making it an excellent medicine for menstrual and postpartum disorders; it also resolves carbuncles and dissipates mastitis. (Motherwort, also known as Chongwei. Li Shizhen stated: The roots, stems, flowers, leaves, and fruits of Motherwort are all usable. For treating Wind-Heat in the Blood level, brightening the eyes, and regulating menstruation, the seeds are best; for postpartum sores and swelling, resolving edema, and promoting blood circulation, they may be used together; because the roots, stems, flowers, and leaves specialize in moving blood, while the seeds...)
